It's hard to be positive after several years of subpar basketball from ODU, but this is a new team that had one bad game. I'm willing to give them a chance to bounce back and show me something. This probably won't be the last bad game they have, but I'll be there or watching for every other game (not on Flosports) with optimism. Criticism is welcome, but I hope we can all return for the next game with hope for improvement.
Chillie, I certainly haven’t given up after 1 bad loss. I will root for the team and monitor future games. I guess I feel this record has been playing over and over for the last 10 years. Each year, many of us get excited, new players with lots of potential. Then, the season starts and it’s just the same tune. Poor play against average competition. After 25 years of season tickets, driving from Roanoke, I gave them up. I just couldn’t continue to support this coach and the lack of hope of having a great season.
Exactly. Even the post game interview could have just been a replay of the same stuff from the last three years.

Seriously? Brave?
What might happen to us? Just curious.
BTW. This is the type of ODU Basketball we grew up on. Some of us would like to return to that level.

Maybe I'm too optimistic. Or maybe I have a higher pain threshold. I have been an avid fan of the Mets and Giants and endured disappointing seasons over the last decade, but this year I was rewarded with the Mets winning 100 games and the Giants with a 6-2 record. I admit it's hard to start a season with optimism after that many years of disappointment. I just know what is possible when certain things happen. I saw a Jeff Jones team do things against UMES that I have seen very rarely and I'm not ready to give up that optimism just yet. That position could change after a few weeks but not yet.
So actually being at the game, I can say we lost because we were afraid to get fouls called on us in the first 15 minutes of the 2nd half and let Drexel get what they wanted offensively. Was this warranted with most of the team being in foul trouble? There's an argument there but with 5 minutes left we tightened up and went on that run to get within 4.
There's potential on offense but the team's is still learning to mesh. Multiple passes thrown into the bench because someone broke the other way. At least 4 missed layups
There's still the same arguments with most ODU teams. We were 6-17 from the line at one point; we hit a couple of early 3s and then abandoned that.
I think/hope we knew that the season was going to come down to a week in March. We need to use the non-confrence to prepare for conference play and get a bye for the tournament.

Those teams would beat the living dog mess out of this team and many others.

Great video that brings back some nice memories. My wife and I were sitting in the brown dump at that game with pretty much the same view as the camera is showing.

Man I’d love to have Monarch basketball like that again. We could hang with anybody. I expected to win almost every game in those days.

It sucks being right all the time but Jones is exactly who I thought he was…..never good enough to take us anywhere that matters but just good enough not to get fired. At least until now. To quote Jack Nicholson, what this athletic department needs is an enema.
It’s too soon to give up hopes, a lot of games to be played. I look forward to that tournament with VT, by then these guys should be comfortable with each other.

And I always felt at that time like we had many more years of being as good as we were then. Who knew how much things were going to change?

If you're going to insult the place at least come up with something original. As for tonight's game, it looked like a carbon copy of what we've come to expect under Jeff Jones.
It is as simple as this....1 NCAA Tournament in the last 10/11 years. Be different if we were in the hunt every year but we have not been close and face it...even though Philly is a tough place to play, this is a bad loss and very poor example of a resume builder. Can we recover from this and turn this young season around...the data and past performance suggests NO. I hope this comes back to haunt me but JJ has not shown he can coach a team up. Same dog mess different year.
"Can we recover from this and turn this young season around"........good question. I personlly don't think so. It's been proven year after year that we don't have the coach capable of doing it. I don't think we have the talent or shooters to do it and once again we definitely don't have the size.
I had to miss listening into the game last night, and it seems like that was for the best. From my perch of secondhand-only information, it sounds like we again have a team of promising athletes who are likely to underperform.
From a review of the box score, I see that Stines again went for an “0-fer” night, but don’t see any comments on him. Does anyone have a sense of what is going on? Is he playing out of position? Being assigned the defensive-specialist role? (Which I thought belonged to Long.)
Other concerns:
Just one assist for our point guard? Is that right? Maybe it’s because our shooting was so bad? 18 offensive rebounds, with little to show for it, would seem to suggest so. Or is it that Imo is not up quite to the job? Do we need to be praying to the satanic overlords at the NCAA for a favorable ruling on Tre Brown?
I actually am prepared to disregard the abysmal free-throw shooting as just an off night. That happens, and although UMES was not a test on most aspects of the game, the solid free-throw shooting from that game tells me that the team (other than Jason Wade) can do it. Unless they were playing scared. Is that what happened?
I see a solid number of minutes shared out among nine players. Is that what we can expect, or was that due to the early foul trouble?
