We talked about this back in 2020 when Barstool Sports made Toledo a national trend with Coach Duggs winning the national championship with the Rockets in the video game NCAA Football 14.

Barstool BigCat (the main dude) is still owed a key to the city from our mayor for bringing a national title to T-Town (he created Coach Duggs and was the one controlling the video game).

Remember, Barstool Sports will also be hosting their game day show on UT's campus for the Battle of I-75. They'll be set up in Parking area 8 - Southside of the Glass Bowl (couldn't find that on the campus map).

Uh, I'm too illiterate to get this. So "Barstool" is a person who plays an on-line game pretending to be a Toledo coach named "duggs" and won a national championship.

Did I get it right and how the heck does one person have enough money to make a basketball tournament?

Life was easier when it was just chalk on a sidewalk.

It's a sports media company that until recently has mostly been making sports podcasts and youtube videos, many of which were filled with sexist and misogynist content from what I have read (I have never listened to any of them). Their founder is one of the tech-bro types, most famous for things people shouldn't be famous for. I've seen it reported that they have made a significant portion of their money from selling t-shirts and other clothing to college students - don't know if that's true. They had a partnership with ESPN, but ESPN pulled out quickly due to the way barstool was sexualizing the ESPN female reporters.

They did master the social media space though, and made a connection with Toledo in the aforementioned video game tournament where "Coach Duggs" decided to play as the Toledo Rockets and won the thing. (He played as other schools in other tournaments, from what I have heard.)

In recent years they are trying to get into live sports sponsorships and streaming video of sporting events. I think they have been or are being bought out by Penn National Gaming - a casino & race track operator.

Thanks. Interesting. Many positive contributors had dubious beginnings. I'd think maybe want to keep separation from anything associated with Penn but there are plenty of tournaments associated with Las Vegas businesses. And if there's any clearly evidenced misogyny or any similar vibe, it doesn't show good judgment joining the venture. I presume all that is clearly in the past?

Just curious - do you recall where you read this at? Dave Portnoy is the founder and he has also done a lot in the way of raising money for various causes - including $30M for small businesses adversely impacted by Covid-19. At the outset of starting Barstool, he also personally donated $20K to pediatric cancer research. He's an outspoken kind of guy and has ruffled a lot of feathers in media groups. He also sued Business Insider for defamation - which was dismissed for essentially the same reason that any public figure faces when trying to sue the media for false reporting.
He had to prove actual malice and "reckless disregard of the truth".

And barstool has been bought out by Penn Gaming - and that was very lucrative for Portnoy. I expect he will continue with Barstool for some period of time then go look for something else to do. He will also continue to raise money and donate it to causes he believes in. I've listened to him talk a number of times. Very interesting guy without any obvious political leanings. Seems to attack both sides depending on who pissed him off most recently.

Umm, google. First time I ever remember hearing about him was years ago and the rape jokes he made and would not disavow even when confronted about them. The ESPN thing is public info, that happened a few years back.

I think Dave Portnoy is a huckster, but if I can watch this game - I'm good.

Adding; it looks like UAB has a small front court but both very good. It will be interesting to see how they matchup against Ray J, then the two linebackers.

I'm hoping he does one when he's in town Tuesday for the game. Gino's or JoJo's would be good options to showcase, hell or Stubborn Brother or Campus Polleyes since they're right on campus.

He's a thin crispy crust guy. NY/NJ type pizza. Maybe Inky's.
Particularly enjoys the family story of the establishment.

Um, I'd vote no to that one. This is OUR home game. I don't think stubborn brothers is going to get a great review, though they'd probably send a fresh pizza instead of heated slices. Gino's is the institution over that way isn't it? That or Calvino's?

Getting ready to leave for Filthydelphia. We’re seeing a little bit of the remnants here from the hurricane but I hopefully I’ll get there. Lived almost my whole life in NY/NJ, except for my time in Toledo and I don’t think, up until recently, that NY/NJ pizza was thin crust. THICK here. In southern NJ, the part that borders Philly, they eat Tomato pie….no cheese. I don’t particularly like it but many do. The last time I was in Toledo, for the Tulsa game, I ate at Inky’s because I remembered it as being good. To my surprise it was REALLY bad. I ordered chicken parm and it was drowning in sauce …that wasn’t even good. GO ROCKETS!

RE: Who is going to Philly on Friday?
Big time game for UT and we know it. Hope the guys can stay loose and play their style. Keys will probably be which team adjusts better to shooting in the huge arena and which team's pg is most able to control the game. Jelly Walker is one of the best college pgs and UT will need to contain him somehow and keep him from just breaking down the defense at will which is what he typically does. RayJ doesn't need to score 23 again but he needs to control tempo, run offense and get us in our stuff cleanly and confidently against a team that will try to pressure us (at least in the half court) and create turnovers. Hoping our guard depth-Maddox, Cochran, Moss- can keep the pressure on Walker and UAB guards and cause some off nights. UAB is a top 50 team and this should be a Quad 1 game. We're the underdog here but still at worst a top 100 team. The winner will have it in their pocket come bubble conversations and final at large selections.

Seems to be a problem with the web-site. They're not trying to charge me money. Probably one of those you get 5 minutes then we pull the rug out, things.

I just linked to it and caught the end of the national anthem. Hopefully it keeps streaming. Will see if it shows up on roku - but doubtful it is
