If I was struggling to make a place at the table, I think I'd take the former. Will get a LOT more casual TV viewers tuning in then they would on a Saturday (essentially zero). Fans and students will get to the game.

Look at the MAC games that are on tv right now. These games aren’t well attended. It’s more difficult for people with early hour jobs or young kids to make it out to the games. This deal is only for tv purposes; and yes, CUSA will get some exposure playing these games rather than playing on ESPN+ on Saturdays.

MAC games are in November in cold weather in Michigan. CUSA teams in October will be a bit warmer. Certainly attendance will suffer, but not as much as the MAC.

Yeah, that's where my head is as well.

How many more people would go to a game on a Saturday afternoon than on a Tuesday night?

MLB games on Saturdays get about 40% more attendance than on Tuesday or Wednesday. If those numbers are similar for CUSA, where the teams average about 20,000 per game, these teams stand to lose about 6000 ticket sales per home game.

So they are sacrificing 1000 alumni and their families visiting campus for a wonderful autumn afternoon of tailgating and getting to know the school for a few thousand gamblers who need to get their fix on a Tuesday night.

A very odd sacrifice -- especially considering that all of these programs lose money anyway!

Good for them. However, I’ll miss watching the games on Stadium as I don’t subscribe to any sports packages.

I've seen crowd shots of mid-week MACtion games, and I'm being generous with "crowd".

So when CUSA mid-week attendance wanes, will the NCAA waiver on the "15k average attendance" rule or will CUSA get creative with attendance like the MAC?

CUSAtion sounds good, these are warm climates compared to the MAC.

I like this TV deal. Would love to see New Mexico State on CBSSN & ESPNU for a weeknight CUSA game or 2.

There is no rule and it’s not enforced

I was a bit surprised that he said "at least $800k per program". Just hope some of these midweek games are on something other than ESPN+ or CBS Sports Net. Otherwise the money is nice but the exposure is not.

It's a sh!tty deal, but it's the best the new C-USA could get. CBS Sports wasn't going to let C-USA keep those Saturday games. So instead of pushing more of their 1st tier content over to Stadium for almost no money, they agreed to sacrifice their attendance, and play Tuesday & Wednesday night games for a few more crumbs from CBS Sports and ESPN.

Better than I expected. Good for C-USA. October mid-week in the South are way way better than November mid-week on the Great Lakes.

Like the MAC it make sense to sell your soul for exposure. And it still allows your rivalry games in November to be at regular times. Given the situation and the mediocre line up, I think Judy delivered really well. This money is not transformative, but it is consistent with the MAC and SBC, enough to stay relevant in G5.

CBSSN gets first pick of 18 basketball and football games

ESPN gets the rest

Midweek October football

Money just behind MAC

I guess I just don't get it. What's the point of college athletics? Mid week games will kill stadium atmospheres/attendance for these schools and alumni who live out of the area won't be able to make it to games. To me, THAT is the entire point.

...according to the ESPN dude in the article, it's all about "linear TV opportunities"... Hopefully C-USA will live long and prosper (I think they will fare better than most folk believe they will) - and now they have more TV appearances than the 'old deal', regardless of the dates... not sure if Stadium still has some rights to C-USA, but they were ok for the most part... ...as good as your typical 2nd-3rd tier ESPN broadcast/crew...

It’s a pretty terrible conference—-but this deal gives it a real chance to make a go of it. Much better visibility than the current deal and I think the CUSA October weekday spotlight games will be a great showcase for the league.

I hope this doesn't come off as negative, just trying to ensure I am understanding the new deal. CBSSN gets first dibs on 18 games. The article mentions it will be league games in October. There are only around 20ish league games in October to begin with right? So 2 games could fall to ESPN Linear Networks? Or is 18 the total number of games CBSSN gets priority on for the entire season including the mid-week October ones?

I am not trying to bash CBSSN as I do enjoy their production values, I just know that their reach is fairly limited compared to ESPN/2 so exposure wouldn't really improve much over Stadium or ESPN+.

That seond one. The rule lets you count attendance in brain-bendingly obscure ways, so that no one is ever out of compliance.

ESPN and CBS Sport Net will share the inventory of midweek football games for linear TV.

So it doesn't sound like Tuesday night on ESPN+. "Share" sounds like one game on ESPN/2/U, one on CBS-SN per Tuesday / Wednesday night, with a fifth game on Thursday?

It's not like CBS-SN has leagues lined up outside the door for their timeslots.

This could be commissioner-babble, but it sounds like MacLeod is selling this as her idea / Octagon's proposal. "alternative schedules", "prove our value"

ESPN and CBS Sport Net will share the inventory of midweek football games for linear TV.

So my guess is that CBS Sports gets 4 Tuesday games, 4 Wednesday games, ESPN-U gets the same, and CBS gets 10 more mostly-Saturday September and November games, with a couple of those on Thursday/ Fridays. And ESPN+ gets whatever's left over after that.

Quick math, 10 schools * 5 home games = 50, minus 18 CBS-SN game is 32, minus 8 ESPN-U Tuesday/Wednesday is 24 games on ESPN+, with one or two randomly bumped up to fill an empty timeslot.

OK, but what was CUSA attendance to begin with? I doubt games being played now are packed to the rafters in many of them. I would bet that many CUSA games are played in front of largely empty stands, regardless of the "official" attendance numbers.

For a conference that lost so much and replaced it with so little, getting almost double the old deal money is pretty impressive.

A testament to rising sports rights fees, I think. IIRC, the SBC is now getting $2m per school per year, same as the AAC was getting as recently as 2019.

RE: CUSA TV Deal released
The MAC schools with good attendance-Toledo, Ohio, Western Michigan, Central Michigan, have been hurt. The ones with no fans, Eastern Michigan, Kent and Akron have actually improved, perhaps because of exposure, perhaps because being in big metros their fans were always local, perhaps simply because they are no longer at the top of the bottom 10. It definitely puts a cap on attendance.

There's been a clear decline overall, but not a huge decline.

Right - it’s not like we’re talking about high attendance schools here.

The NCAA also simply hasn’t ever cared to enforce the attendance rule. It’s a great focus on this forum (as a lot of people here seem to be obsessed with finding ways to kick schools out of FBS and/or Division I entirely), but the decision-makers clearly don’t care to apply it.

Finally, I really think a lot of people are underestimating how much value having a game for 3 hours on ESPN or even CBSSN means for simple name recognition for an entire school. All of us here are probably in the 99th percentile of knowledge about colleges and their locations across the country, but that’s the not the case for the vast majority of people. When you see what schools have to spend on simply getting people to know their name in direct mailings, email campaigns, college fair visits, etc., and how thousands of other schools are doing the same thing in an overloaded marketplace, you start seeing why colleges make decisions to spend money on athletics programs even if no one shows up to their games. That football or basketball game on TV can at least get some name recognition implanted a lot more quickly and effectively than pretty much any other form of advertising out there.

La Tech regularly draws over 20,000. When UTEP is decent they draw well. From 2004-2006 they were over 40k every year, peaking at nearly 48,000.
