Houston Fan Interested in Attending 8 January Match up
Hey y'all,

As the subject states, I'm looking into attending the Houston @ UC game in January and wanted to drop by and ask for some bearcat advice on how best to make the roadie happen.

Tentative plan is to fly in Friday, figure out things to do Friday afternoon/evening and Saturday, attend the game Sunday, and then fly back Monday morning. Stay downtown, but not rent a car. Yes, I know it will be winter, but I'll imagine I'm back in Milwaukee.

If interested, I'd be glad to meet up with some of y'all. I might bring some Cougar Paw beer from 8th Wonder to share. 02-13-banana

The Bengals play Ravens on 1/8 so you better book downtown early. Could determine AFC Central. No good public transportation from downtown to UC, taxi/UBER/LYFT is your options. Consider Marriott AC Hotel at The Banks, plenty of places to eat/drink in walking distance.

Is there anything you suggest seeing/doing while in Cincy?

Cincinnati Union Terminal Museum [Cincinnati History, Natural History & Science, Omnimax Theater]. This iconic architectural wonder opened in the 1930s as a rail hub but still serves an Amtrak line. Just west/north of the main downtown.

You can also check out the Banks/RiverWalk area along the Ohio River sandwiched between the Bengals and Reds stadiums. Easy walk from any downtown hotel. Lots of bars/restaurants in that area too.

Not sure where you are downtown but you can basically split the city by "The Banks", which is from the river up to 3rd street between the Bengals and Reds stadiums. It's a pretty generic stadium development site but plenty of good bars and food. If you want to try a local joint near there I recommend Kitty's wings near the Bengals stadium. The Blind Pig is also the best "local" bar down there IMO, but the bars on E Freedom Street are the most popular. It should be slammed for the Ravens game.

The middle of the city from 3rd Street to Central Parkway is the core "Downtown/Business District". Fountain Square is the center point plaza of the city - you can see the Christmas tree and Ice rink down there that time of year. For food in that neighborhood, Knockback Knats has great wings (Kitty's is better). Go to 6th street if you want a fancy meal - Jeff Rubys steakhouse, Sotto, Boca, and Igbys are all classy. Go to Rusconis for some pizza.

Central Parkway to Clifton/Campus is "Over the Rhine". It's a historic district that was revived recently so there's a large amount of historic italianette architecture and TONS to do. Washington Park is worth a visit at any point to get a feel for the neighborhood. There are so many bars and restaruants down there it's hard to pick. Some of the best are 1. Rhinegheist Brewery - local brew that's become quite large 2. Taft's Ale House - another local brewery located in an old church 3. Ghost Baby for a unique underground bar in an old beer cellar 4. Rosedale if you want a younger, vibrant crowd and 5. Mr. Pitifuls if you want to go clubbing (or anywhere on that street) or get into a fight. You should try to make it to Findlay market on Sunday morning as well.

I'll let everyone else comment on what to find in Clifton. That's the college town.

For places outside of the city - Awakenings in Hyde Park has the best coffee and Madtree is a very popular Suburban version of Rhinegheist. I'm not sure youd want to go any further out without a car.

We suck at fun winter stuff, because it doesn't get cold here for long enough. Jan/Feb I usually just keep my head down until March.

Banks and Union Terminal are my suggestions as well. Although I haven't been to Union Terminal since it was redone.

HofbrÀuhaus House is just across the Ohio River. Think Munich Octoberfest. Also, a Hard Rock Casino nearby to downtown.

Personally, I like wandering campus and exploring all the things that change as opposed to those that stay the same.

And I get Skyline, Graeters, and croissants from Boosalis.

The underground brewery tours are really neat. There's several of them in Over-the-Rhine (the neighborhood between downtown and UC's campus).

The one I've been on goes through a bunch of huge underground lagering chambers from the 19th century that people forgot about until a city worker almost fell into one in the mid 2000s.

Yeah... A stop at the UC campus is always worth it. Tons of interesting architecture and the jewel that is Nippert right there in the middle, open to walk through pretty much whenever you want.

......The streetcar is free and runs a continuous loop from The Banks up to Over the Rhine and Findlay Market....The Banks will be rockin' with Bengals and Ravens fans. OTR has a bunch of very cool joints, especially on Vine St. and Main St. Jeff Ruby's Steakhouse off Fountain Square is pricey, but worth it. Fountain Square that time of year will have the skating rink up and entertainment going. Findlay Market on a Saturday is generally worth a visit.

Booked an airbnb style place downtown.

Southwest flight booked.

I'm going to note a number of these suggestions in my phone for later. I'll be sure to drop by in a few months as the game approaches to see if anyone is up for meeting up prior to tipoff for a beer.

Really excited about this one. Should be a great game.

I've been told from a fellow UH alum that Skyline is necessary for the experience.

BTW if you're ever in Houston, I HIGHLY recommend going to a good Bahn Mi place (or Vietnamese food in general). Those Vietnamese sandwiches are so damn good.
