RE: 2022 Football Week 7 @ Toledo
I know it's tough to criticize the offense after a defensive game like that, but one thing that I think is holding the passing game back is the lack of a third option. Walker has stepped in to replace Abrum nicely on the outside, but no one has filled Johnson's role. So when you have a game like yesterday where Schlee and the guys on the outside are just out of sync all day, the passing game completely stalls. Through 7 games we have 13 catches from the slot, 7 from RBs, and 8 from TEs. That's pretty ridiculous considering how many plays we run. Last year our three slot receivers (Johnson, Poke, and Floriea) combined for 90 catches. We need to revive the slot.

I’m not a financial expert, but $440,000 to be 2-5 (21-29 overall) doesn’t exactly strike me as money well spent.

I think it's 480k... but also, come on man. He inherited one of the worst teams in the country and went 2-10 in year one. No one was going to be able to make that first year's team good. Take that out and he's 19-19. But 9 of those losses over the last 4 years have been the nearly unwinnable money games. Two more have been the MAC champion game and a bowl game. Ignoring that first year he's 15-8 in the MAC regular season. I could remind you what things were like before he got here if you need help appreciating him.

Stop calling them soul collectors. This defense still stinks.

Two years ago Baker Mayfield and Kevin Stefanski were Sun Gods. The Browns finally had their franchise quarterback and their coach. Now Mayfield is gone and Stefanski is getting lots of bad press. Things change. I really do appreciate what Lewis has done but it's clear he is not the miracle worker many hoped he would be. I do believe that if he stays long enough he will win a MAC title, the first since 1972, but it's going to take longer than we wanted to believe. This is his 5th season here. The fact is that since Kent State became what is now FBS in 1962, no coach has done better over at least a 5-year period.

The obvious difference between the NFL and college is when a new NFL coach/front office take over a bad team, being bad helps you bring in top level talent because you get the highest picks (unless you've traded your future picks for a sex offender and you're still bad).
In college turning around a bad team is harder because being bad means you have a harder time brining in talent.

If I’m a state school with budget issues and I’m shelling out half a million for a silly football coach, I want a better return on that investment, plain and simple.

So, when you say a better return of your investment?
Over 20,000 in attendance at home coming this year and attendance last year was up.
Maybe you want a better return on your investment in the won lost column. You would support dropping the 3 non winnable money games to improve the chances for victories.

Bingo! You can’t just talk for picks, being bad for many many years makes this job so undesirable to many it’s ridiculous. Lewis has done well to try and get those involved to buy in and flip the culture, he’s done a great job at that thus far. Starting every season with a probable 1-3 record is also ridiculous, add that up over the years and you’re looking at really weighing down an overall record. Those that are looking to poach our coach know what they’re getting which is why his name gets tossed around. I believe they know he’s a great candidate, but also believe at the end of the day they have to sell him to their people and the record is bit too much to have to explain.

He’s earning below average in the MAC yet has much more difficult obstacles to chase the same results. They’re paying that salary regardless, and unlike the many other previous hires that had good candidates getting passed over for the eventual hire that bombed, I couldn’t think of anyone out there they passed on that would deliver us better results. I don’t think anyone that had a hand in him being hired and extended has one iota of buyers remorse.

I'm a believer in Lewis. After Idaho I said he needs to show that he can win with a QB that is not Dustin Crum. That's not going to happen in one year.
Still though... Defense.

As long as Haslam owns the Browns nothing will improve long term. Deshaun Watson is the latest example. I guess Haslam didn’t realize football players had wives, sisters and daughters.
Kent’s Haslam is it’s budget. As long as they can’t spend more money there’s a pretty low ceiling. Lewis not being hired away yet might be a sign he is not as good as we thought. That defense is awful. Don’t know enough to know why but he doesn’t seem to be able to fix it.

Defense has lost for the rest of the season LBer plus last week another starter out.
Playing a true Freshman at LBer. Doesn't explain poor ball/coverage skills by DBs.
Injuries part of the game but lack of depth showing

I'm willing to give the new DC at least two years to apply his scheme and help fix the bad habits. The defense was never going to be an instant fix. Prior to this weekend I thought the defense was showing improvement week after week.

Who's the LB lost for the season? I hope not Johns. He was playing really well before he got hurt.

I hate to be like this, but, if you don't want to pay that for a college football coach, you might as well not have a college football at this level. That's another discussion.
As far as budget goes, I saw something that claimed that Ohio has the sixth best college education system in the nation. That's overall, including private, but I tend to think it is true. Case and Ohio State are top research institutions and then Ohio has another group of excellent public universities (including Kent) as well as a lot of good private liberal arts schools.
Ohio, on the other hand, doesn't really get the economic bang for such a good higher ed system. So many of the college graduates leave the state because of the lack of opportunities and I see no reason why Ohio tends to be trending towards Indiana as opposed to Illinois/PA in economic strength. But that issue goes way beyond this forum.

RE: 2022 Football Week 7 @ Toledo
Lewis will be gone regardless of results in next year or two if not sooner
Don’t forget OC’s at power 5 schools make way more in income than our
Head Coach.
Dean Pees left Kent because he could make more as an Asst in the NFL.
He turned that into several DC positions all of which paid more than a million annually. Good for him. He’s still working, now DC in Atlanta.
Lewis has lots of opportunities regardless of Kent’s record.
He seems very committed but given the restraints of starting 1-3 every year you have to wonder when he leaves. 5-6 years is usually the coaching lifespan for a Kent coach.
