IU was picking on Harris and getting PI flags left and right. Not sure why IU stopped throwing and decided to mix in runs etc. I would’ve thrown on every play. Almost made it seem like they had money on the game to lose the game.

I seriously doubt BB had a scab on his arm. That was just coach speak. He was getting pounded and came up wincing many times after landing on his arm. More pain than a scab would cause.

If they have 8 in the box, we should have kept throwing and stayed aggressive. A couple completions over those 8 and would be a big gain.

Not to gas light things- but if EP slithers through the first line defense, wouldn’t he have been able to go the distance by beating 1-2 LB’s?? He is able to make guys miss. Another score would have really reduced our stress levels.

Some to alot of that was self-inflicted. He needs to either learn to throw it away without taking the hit or slide. And thanks to Kenny Pickett the sliding part now requires way more thinking.

The announcers made that observation several times as I was screaming at Ben through the TV... BB has to have that clock in his head and especially with a big lead he needs to throw the ball away and live to fight another down. As for the slide, CLF addressed that in the presser too - in college, sliding to keep the clock running doesn't gain an advantage unless it's in the last 2 minutes. Otherwise the clock basically continues to run even when you run out of bounds once the ball is reset. In other words, BB's slide didn't help on Saturday and would have had the same result if he'd have just run out of bounds

At that point in the game for Bearcat fans it was like, "what else can go wrong here?". The lead felt tenuous at best but it all worked out in the end. So if it was a cycle of learning for BB, it probably came at the right time and in a future game it might just avert a disaster when a first down conversion is necessary to preserve a win.

My thought process was more about getting the first and less about running clock. i could be wrong but he was just short of getting the first under post pickett rules but would have gotten the first pre-pickett. i should have made that more clear

I agree, the first down was the main priority which is why I was thinking he'd just run out of bounds. I didn't know the college clock rule at that point but even if the clock had been stopped, it would have given the 'Cats at least 3 more downs and would have been a huge morale killer for IU. Oh well, lesson learned and one I guarantee you BB (and hopefully the rest of the team) won't forget anytime soon

In the 4th quarter under 5 minutes a first down and in bounds, the clock would run after chains are set, so roughly around 25 seconds would've come off the clock. First down out of bounds, the clock would be stopped, so no time would have been off the clock. Sliding was the smart move for clock management, simply slid a foot too soon with the way the sliding rule is now interpreted.

We all agree the slide was smart but only if the first down was guaranteed. I still would have preferred he guarantee the first down and run out of bounds as opposed to sliding and leaving it in doubt. By getting the first down, at least 120 - 150 more seconds are run off the clock or IU is forced to call TOs. Part of the reason for the slide, at the time it occurred, was to avoid the contact with an IU defensive player running at BB. If he runs out of bounds, the worst case scenario is a first down and stopped clock, UC keeps the ball and gains a bit of badly needed momentum at that point.

College rule is that the clock would restart once the ball is set until 2 min left I believe.

I think RealDeal's version is correct under the college rules which makes the issue of sliding in or going out of bounds mostly irrelevant from a time perspective. Getting the first down was the key objective. It's surprisingly hard to find a quick reliable answer but this is possibly accurate:

Quote:In college and the NFL, the things that stop the clock until the next snap are incomplete passes, plays that end with a score, and team timeouts. If a runner carries the ball out of bounds, the clock will stop temporarily but then is started again close to the time the ball is spotted for the next play. If there are under 2 minutes left in either half (in college) the clock stays stopped until the next snap for runners out of bounds. In the NFL it’s 2 minutes in the first half and 5 minutes in the 2nd.

It used to be the rule that the clock stayed stopped until the next snap in college and the NFL when a runner went out of bounds but due to time constraints and wanting to keep the game times from going past 3:10, they instituted this rule.

There were about 4 minutes left in Q4 when Ben slid btw.

Yep, I definitely mixed up the College and NFL times for running clocks on OOB.

What will the spread be next week against USF? 28?

Next year will be the first time USF isn’t on the schedule since 2002…

After losing 5 players to the NFL and 7 starters overall, the defense is doing this through 5 weeks...

Completely different way of getting it done (we were not great at getting sacks or stops behind the line last year, simply didn't allow plays through the passing game at all), but drill more than getting it done.

Maybe it's recency bias but I don't recall us blitzing as much last season

WE blitzed a lot in the 1st half, but now as much in the second. I think once they realized they could get pretty good press on Brin rushing 3 or 4, they put more guys in coverage. I don't knw that we blitzed less the year before, but it seemed like we always had 4 guys on every play. That's 3 lineman and 1 blitz guy.

We didn't need to last year. Our pass defense was strictly based on superior coverage as opposed to generating pressure like this season to take the onus off of our less talented DBs (not saying they aren't talented, just that they aren't Coby and Sauce).
