The MOB...
Aside from the Hack in the gym playing handball/squash (I can never remember which is which), DesRoches is the only president I've seen at a public function in shorts.
[I may have missed an event that Rupp or Gillis attended in shorts, and have no issue with being corrected.]
I like that Reggie appears to have no issue with being casual.

Since the comments in the new president thread had all swerved to The MOB, I'll begin this thread with comments about the new president.

Wearing shorts at Rice is not sufficient to qualify as “casual”.
Get back with me after the first few runnings of Club 13 under this new president’s term and we’ll see just how casual he can be…

The MOB flew to LA for the USC game.
The Gladu brothers put in 3311 miles getting the instruments there and back.

A five-mile side trip along the way.
A bucket-list dinner at Cattleman's Steakhouse in Fabens TX.

Quite an experience for a college freshling

RE: The MOB...
Damn... what a GREAT experience for a young MOBster.... THIS is what we need to get back to. It doesn't need to be every game... but it needs to be often enough that they are willing to put up with the 'bad' ones in order to get the great ones.

Even if most of the fans are there for the other team, the MOB almost always gets a great reception, which makes for a fun time for them and thus a better experience for OUR fans, students and players

Thanks for sharing this G-

This should be part of a MOB marketing brochure/video

So it seems. Rather than using that money to pay the current BOB and letting them use that as a recruiting tactic to grow the BOB (and the MOB) they will completely change the format of the band. Only brass and percussion (percussion being a drumset) means that members of the MOB that play woodwinds, strings, other unconventional instruments, and the majority of percussion, will not be part of the band.

IF they can get this band to work and find the people to play in it, which will be difficult because they will need to find music majors to join to reach the numbers they want, Im sure it will sound good. But it will be at the cost of isolating half the MOB and who knows if that will mean even lower numbers at football games. Chances are they they end up finding something else to stay busy and don't come back for football.

Hmm if we have a budget to improve the atmosphere at games after we join the AAC, and we're going to hire paid band members to that end... maybe we should consider hiring paid spectators too?

Hmm, maybe I should retire next summer and take that as a side-hustle.

If you want to be set up to fail, I can't think of a better employer for your side gig than Rice Athletics. The first thing to go with this new plan will be the restriction that it's Rice students only. My guess is that a lack of interest, or an insufficient number of people passing the tryouts, will be the excuse used to hire from outside.

It's going to be harder than ever to maintain a MOB for football, and I have to assume that's part of the plan (or acceptable collateral damage).

I think the band will find lots of fun things to do, instead of playing at basketball games. There are far more invitations for miniMOB events than we have ever been able to play for. There's also Mardi Gras, and now we'll get to go, if only because we won't have the BOB conflicts.

I wholeheartedly appreciate your ability to find a potential silver lining in this, despite my skepticism that it will still be net negative over the long run. I will be happy to be wrong on this.

My mind is already exploding writing potential show scripts for Mardi Gras.

The first rule of Mardi Gras is “all those things they wouldn’t let you say and do at football games, those are on the table now”.

The second rule of Mardi Gras is “um, really guys? Even *we* have our standards. No, you can’t say THAT.”

Not to be a total buzz-kill, but there are no shows at Mardi Gras, much less scripts.
It's a parade.
Not sure what Mardi Gras you're thinking of...

Yup. The parade is still fun, at least when I did it. But we didn't get to stay in Galveston (the ones I did - once with the MOB, once with the Texas T-bones) for the night. Bus in and out. 03-hissyfit
