Starting the pregame thread for this game. Line seems a bit steep based on Saturday, or a bit generous if you account for our recent performance vs. the Cougars.

Line seems steep based on both teams' performance last Saturday. Take the points.

Most lines this time of year are based on reputation and history, not analysis.

i dunno, historically we have played very badly there. in 2009 or maybe 2007, we were late to a game there and i think we were down by 21 and i just turned around including the kickoff being run back. I also walked out at halftime at NRG stadium out of complete disgust in about 2012.

While I really hope to beat those bozos and i would seriously consider a great season if the only thing we do is beat them, I suspect it could be a horrific bloodbath, given their struggles so far this season.

We just never to seem to match up well with them.

I hear you, but I give us a better chance this year because I think our defense has picked it up a notch this year (notwithstanding the usc game and the invisibleness of Carroll). Also, with our PTR offense a thing of the past (please) we can be very competitive just by eliminating the horrible interceptions.

Things aren't going to plan at UH. We'll have their undivided attention. They beat us easily.

But avoiding interceptions is one reason for going to PTR in the first place. The more you throw the more picks you are going to give up.

Regarding PTR. If Bloom is willing to give a bit more control, it would be nice to see more elements of the read option incorporated. Right now, we seem to have a split personality on offense: Coach T's spread philosophy and Coach Bloom's PTR. I'm sure Coach T has some read option concepts. I would love to see more concepts similar to what Coach Reagan employed while he was here at Rice. That was definitely a run first type offense. Of course, we run the risk of injuring our QB so a platoon might be effective. Don't get me wrong, I don't have much in the way of real complaints. But even incorporating our fullbacks in some sort of option scheme would be very intriguing.

As I've said a few times before, I like combining option running with a complete passing game. The flexbone running game is about 10 plays, run&shoot passing is 8 plays, the Air Raid is about 10 plays, and a 3-step quick passing game is about 10 plays. Add draws and screens and you have about 50 plays total, maybe out of 10 formations. That's very small, but very complete, offense. And if you teach RUOwls's receiver techniques, you can move the ball on anyone. So you keep the playbook small and that gives you enough reps that you can execute the hell out of it.Make 25 first downs, score 30 points, keep the ball for 35 minutes, and get 450 yards of total offense, and you will be hard for anybody to beat.

Well deserved—- and glad to see we got some national attention. This is seriously the type of thing that can start to build a NY6 resume.

Agree with both y’all. If I was Vegas I’d make this a 7.5-9.5 advantage for UH.

But their goal is not to predict the score, it’s to encourage action on both sides of the proposition.

“Smart Money” says this is not the UH of last year (12-2)? And probably no longer the AAC favorite (even though they were in the preseason poll).

Wouldn’t count on many.

Our president set the standard when she said we fire coaches for going 8-4 it gave our fan base an unrealistic standard to measure whether or not we have a team on the field.

This houston team is pretty talented, and with the right motivation and scheme can win a game vs anyone not named Georgia or Alabama. But given how they actually play on the field I fully expect Rice to be right in this game.

UH is undisciplined, inconsistent, and unreliable. Everything you’d ask for in an upset.

We just got blown out by Kansas for crying out loud. And if history is on our side rice wins this game. UH has never won more in a row in history than their current streak of 6.

Please owls. Bury us. Mop the floor with us. So Dana can get exposed today rather than 2 years from now.

Thanks

The Touchdown Club of Houston is holding the Rice-UH Bayou Bucket Luncheon tomorrow (Wednesday) at noon, at the University of Houston Alumni Center.

Neal Farmer says there will be at least 10 seats set aside for those who didn't buy a ticket or a table beforehand.

The seating chart shows that there are likely eight empty seats at the table where Chuck Throckmorton and I will be sitting.

Anybody know if there's a certain section for Rice fans at TDECU or will I have to suck it up and sit among the cougars?

An entertaining event.
Lots of positive coach-speak about maintaining the series and about the upcoming game.
Also quite a few Rice football lettermen there.

Got to talk to Neal Farmer, with whom I have corresponded in the past, about The MOB.

Also got to chat with Nancy Burch, who was at a table with Bill Cousins and Rick Mello. In addition to the sports side of things, Nancy and I are on the board of the Rice Historical Society.

JK speaks...

Didn't realize that you had only corresponded with, never met, Neal. Good guy.

We call him "Uncle Neal." Years ago we were flying back from a game at Ohio State, on Southwest. Will was very small so we got to preboard with him. Neal was going to be in the last boarding group, so we said, come on, Uncle Neal, you are traveling with us, and he preboarded with us.
