At least last week, the play on the field was what had folks talking.
The value of the alternate uniforms is in the build up to game time. If you watch any of the social media, they've been talking about our uniforms for the past two weeks constantly. Lots of build-up to game day and constant tweeting with lots of retweets and comments.
Game day, it's all about the product on the field and the outcome of the game.

I would prefer for the build-up to be about the quality of the football team rather than the uniforms. But I suppose you take what you can get.

Yes, to both comments.

Those are in honor of the 1st black players at Rice who wore that logo. I kind of like the V for victory wings.

It’s a big one. Something to get excited about week in and week out. For some kids it has a huge impact, for others not as much. Either way, it’s something kids get excited about and enjoy being a part of during their time playing ball.

Understanding the value of brand consistency is hardly "old man syndrome". On the other hand, resorting to ageism to attack that understanding certainly comes across as jackassery, or close to it.

To adopt your lawn analogy, the recommendation of many fans is that the "kids" playing for Rice on Rice's "lawn" should be readily recognizable as Rice. That's not the case when the Rice look changes from year to year, from sport to sport, and from week to week. While you may disagree with that recommendation, there is no need to be a douchebag about it.

"Jackassery." Laughing my ass off. Agree with the post. We need a consistent look, and we found it in 2008.

Establishing a brand does not stop us from having alternate uniforms. I struggle to see why you can’t understand that. We all fully recognize the University of Oregon’s brand even though they change their uniform every week. The O and the wings are always present in one form or another, but everything else changes weekly if not more often. Nothing wrong with that and it creates a lot of excitement as people wait to see what will appear before every game.

A few other examples would be Oklahoma State, Arizona State, and Louisville. They change their uniforms on a regular basis, but you always know who they are based on a number of different consistent themes. Rarely is the uniform branding the same week in week out. Still, you recognize the brand every time.

Ok, but the question asked was whether the effect is “huge”, “minor”, or somewhere in between. You’ve been kinda all over the place.

For someone who is constantly pedantic to the point of being a laughingstock to many on this board, your comment about "douchebag" is especially misplaced. Oh, how about some more engineering updates on this sports board?

It was a freaking joke, but you right wingers are notorious for lacking a sense of humor.

But that's the point, the O and the wings are the constants that link all the Oregon unis back to the trademarks. So whatever uniform they wear, the trademarks are still there.

Most schools seem to have two reliable trademarks. TexasU has the "UT" and the stylized longhorn (and the hook-em hand signal to go with it), Notre Dame has "ND" and the leprechaun, Southern Cal has "SC" and Tommy Trojan, Texas Tech has "TT" and the masked rider, Georgia has the "G" inside a football and UGA, Bama has the script "A" and the elephant, Tennessee has the orange "T" and the checkerboard end zone, Ohio State has the all-caps "Ohio State" and Brutus, Michigan has the "M" and the helmets, and so forth. Most schools seem to have two that endure. Auburn even has three, the interlocking "AU", the war eagle, and the tiger. I frankly think that, particularly being in a conference that already has two other Tigers (LSU and Mizzou), Auburn should strongly consider adopting the War Eagle as its mascot (also particularly because of the work with raptors that its ag school is doing) and dropping the tiger. The pregame flight of the eagle (typically one rehabbed at the ag school) into the stadium is particularly electric.

One problem is that the most effective trademarks arise from years when the programs have had sustained success and Rice hasn't really enjoyed much sustained success, so it has kept changing the look. Hey, change the logo, that might work. Bo Hagan, incidentally, tried to do an "R" inside a football, but G's fit into footballs a lot better than R's do, not to mention that his time was not a time of much success.

It seems to me that the two symbols most associated with Rice are the wings (from the time of the most recent sustained football success, the 1990s under Fred and Ken, and also goes with the hand signal) and the OE "R" (from the most successful period for any Rice sport ever, baseball under Wayne). For football, I would like to see the wings on the helmets and the OE "R" on top of the shoulders of its jerseys. I would prefer blue with white trim or white with blue trim for jerseys, gray/silver pants, and gray/silver helmets ("Old Gray Bonnet") with blue wings, but with the two trademarks to tie the uniforms together, they could do anything they want to vary the look for special occasions and not lose the branding.

Rice's changes have not preserved any trademarks. In particular, the JK changes to all-caps modern font "RICE OWLS" and the chicken owl have come at the expense of the two most lasting trademarks (the OE "R" and the wings) that Rice has had. Pick a trademark or two (I have made my suggestions, others may differ) and incorporate them into everything you do.

That's just pure B.S. The chicken owl has never been used as a logo by Rice sports teams. Rather, it's used on merchandizing. The OE "R" remains the most prominent and visible (especially to outsiders) logo, branding and trademark for Rice athletics. The "wings" have a legacy only in football; not the other sports.

But again that's the problem. The logos used for merchandizing should be the logos worn by the teams. There needs to be consistency throughout. You don't need the block modern "RICE OWLS" when you have the OE "R," which is more distinctive and more consistent with the academic image that Rice projects. And you don't need the chicken owl when you have the wings.

The wings' legacy is primarily football, but it extends to the hand symbol, much as the TexasU longhorn hand symbol is consistent with the longhorn logo.

Whatever the specifics, what is needed is one or two consistent logos that are used throughout. You can do whatever with the uniforms if you have consistent trademarks that tie them together.

This Week's Uniforms
I like the “new” OE-R inside the Texas outline a lot (this was our helmet logo at USC).

It incorporates the iconic OE-R while providing some context. As iconic as the OE-R is within the world of sports fans, to millions in the US it is just an old-fashioned letter. Framing it in the Texas outline allows Rice to more fully OWN it, and also allows Rice to inform the millions of folks who don’t (yet) even know what Rice is, or in which state it’s located. It’s a win-win for branding and I hope it continues as one of our most permanent logos.
