Last night I tweeted to the Rally Club to make Sunday's match an event for students as student attendance last weekend was non-existent and a strong, vocal student presence would certainly help the cause against Creighton. A win will almost assuredly get us back into the Top 25 for the first time since 2020.

They are doing a scooter giveaway for Kansas State. Then they are doing a pregame tailgate (free food) and free poms for Creighton.

Here's the preview...

https://riceowls.com/news/2022/9/15/wome...ghton.aspx

Quote:The Owls (8-1) are currently ranked No. 21 in the RPI Rankings (thru Sept. 12) while Creighton is No. 22. Kansas State checks in at No. 56.

As a team the Owls currently rank third in the NCAA in digs per set (18.00) and are 24th in opponents hitting percentage (.145). Rice and Creighton are the only two teams in the NCAA this season to record 100+ digs in a single match twice.

I hope the new President can get the students more excited about athletics or recruit students who like athletics also as part of the college experience.

UT now up 2-1, allowing 14, then 12 in their two set wins.

Set one was the first set the horns have lost all year (against 20 sets won)

Not true-- they lost one set in back-to-back matches at #8 Ohio State, and I believe they lost one set to Minnesota.

UT rebounded with consecutive blowout sets. The difference in the match to no surprise is in blocking (UT has the 14-4 edge) and service aces (UT has an 11-3 edge). Strangely neither team has many digs, relatively speaking.

UT closes UH out in 4 sets, but the final set was tight (25-22). Very respectable showing by UH , who should continue to receive votes in the poll. The match was in Austin.

My “first set lost” factoid came from the LHN announcers which otherwise I thought were very good (and not exceedingly biased, either). Maybe I misheard and it was something like first set lost at home, I dunno.

Another quote they gave was from the Houston coach who mentioned how much Rice’s scrimmage vs UT helped the Owls compared to Houston who “had” to play us cold in their season opener (their only other loss before tonight).

UH did look good in spots and I was impressed they put up a good fight tonight.

So that's their excuse for being swept by us (with only one of the 3 sets being close)? If they did not schedule an exhibition match prior to the season-opener that's their own fault.

Plus, we didn't have Bichelmeyer vs UH.

Wonder if UT had any injuries going into the games.

It did sound like an “excuse” to me when I heard the quote relayed during the broadcast (to be fair, they did not play a recording of the quote, this was just a paraphrase by the broadcast team).

But the more I thought about it the more it sounded like a way of being complimentary of the UT team. And I’m sure playing UT last night will help Houston continue to improve.

I just hope that after this weekend that Houston will be able to claim that their only two losses are to “currently ranked” teams.

Go Rice!

All the regulars played, though O'Neil, Skinner and Phillips were all very quiet in the box score. Eagleston had a big game with 20+ kills, a couple aces and only 4 errors.

Hopefully we don't look past Kansas State toward Creighton or we're going to find ourselves in trouble. K-State is 9-2, with the only losses coming in a 5-setter to a good UCF team (receiving votes) on the road and Loyala-Chicago on the road. Otherwise not a particular strong schedule, but they did beat Syracuse, NC State, Rutgers and Mizzou.

Rice had a 6-1 lead but that has shrunk. 9-7

Small student crowd. Heard it was Screw your Roommate today.
