I've got to admit; I find this new landscape is a bit odd.

I still think that the university should just pay the students directly. Give them $10/hr and use it as a recruiting tool. Gives them guaranteed money plus the ability to earn more with NIL. It should sway recruits that debating between other G5 schools.

Then they are employees and you have benefits and workers comp. issues.

Benefits get negated by making them part time employees like the other current five thousand student workers.

And if the kid enters the “portal” does he or she pay the money back?

You can’t tie NIL agreements to enrollment in a specific school or participation in a sport. It’s simply an agreement to use the name, image, or likeness for some sort of payment. Caveat emptor.

If they can currently cover over 5000 students then covering a couple hundred more shouldn't be an issue.

Speaking of benefits I've always wondered about college athletes medical coverage. Do the kids have to have their own coverage or does the school cover them for sports related injuries? Say a kid tears his ACL, who is paying for the surgeries and lengthy rehab?
