3 weeks later and they save $7.5M. They wanted him gone that badly.

Or an alum said here's a check for the difference. They knew what they were doing setting that buyout date in the season. Either way, Frost was done before the Big Ten season kicked off.

My bet is Urban Meyer gets a good long look, and if he passes, they go after an established blue blood coordinator (Bill O'Brien?). No way they're going with a G5 up-and-comer again after the last two.

Agree BMan on your second paragraph. Nebraska needs someone to come in with some experience winning games and recruiting chops. This is a once proud program that hasn't finished with a winning record since Mike Riley's 2016 season - his only winning record in three seasons there.

On that last note, Riley came from Oregon St and preceded Frost .

Nebraska may have a tough time attracting a coach they deem worthy of their (long past) historic success. That program has completely lost its mojo. Nebraska once built champions with out-of-state talent that now has abundant, more exciting places to hang their helmets than Lincoln, NB can ever offer.

Nebraska can open up the bank account with that B1G money though. That passionate fan base is wild ass hungry for a winner too. What about Bob Stoops?

As some may or may not know, not long ago Dan Patrick said his "source" or "sources" told him to watch out for Urban to end up at Nebraska or Arizona St. iirc.

They are an old money program trapped by their circumstances. Little in-state talent to pull from, and the talent pool is just as poor regionally. No recent history of success and most of their success was built in a time that was so different from what the recruiting targets know or remember, they would probably have to do a deep dive in youtube to figure it out (and that's assuming they want to). Who was the last cornhusker of consequence? Ndamkong Suh? Their last first round pick was Prince Amukamara (2011 draft), the last cornhusker to really shine in the NFL was arguably Lavonte David (2nd rd, 2012). in a lot of ways, this is as much a rebrand as it is a rebuild. But if they are being honest with themselves, the goal should be to contend for the b10 championship and spoiler to, mostly, osu's playoff ambitions. The day's of national championship contender status are gone.

i know that someone mentioned not going g5 but if they hire a retread they'll be throwing away money. At least with a g5 guy they'll have something to prove.

ED: i also think the smart retreads will wait for a better coaching gig than Nebraska anyway. As gigs go, it strikes me as too difficult to win big over there.

Yeah, Neal Brown's days in Morgantown are coming to an end...really fast now. I think his situation is irretrievable.

Maybe if Nebraska lived with Frost for three more games and then actually opened a bank account with the $7.5 million they saved, the athletic department would be better off.

Seems like a lot of P5 schools just waste the money they bring in.

I understand Jimbo has not lived up to his contract and A&M has nearly unlimited funds but his contract is massive and fully guaranteed. He's not getting fired unless they can find some cause to get out of guaranteed money.

Bolded, well said. Nebraska is somewhat unique--no major league sports and no other major university athletic program in the entire state. Cornhusker fans will show up for those next three games regardless of who is standing on the sidelines and they'll renew season tickets because they have no next best alternative for autumnal Saturday afternoons. So why squander $7.5 million just to put an interim coach on the sidelines the rest of the year?

A promising Nebraska student who has to drop out of school next semester for lack of a couple thousand dollars in institutional support might rightly ask the same question.

Places like Nebraska there was likely old generational donor $$ from families who still Think it's the Osborne era lined up to get him out now.

Ignoring the buyout... if they fired Jimbo based on his record, it would be like when Nebraska fired Solich. They'd struggle to hire another coach.

Solich: 58-19, 5 top-25 seasons in 6 years, fired after a 9-3 season where he was ranked 18th.
Jimbo: 35-15, 3 top-25 seasons in 4 years, finished the season #4 only 2 years ago.

Jimbo also had the #1 recruiting class in the country this year. No one else was even close - he signed 8 of the nation's 33 5-star athletes.
