No earth-shattering announcements, but we have about a three-minute talk given by Reggie at the pre-USC game party on the SC campus Saturday. Nice exemplar of the guy's personability. No stuffed shirt, he.

(And he did give a brief plug for enhancement of the athletic program.)

I note a spirited response from the crowd when des Roches stated his personal commitment to excellence in athletics.

No applause, though, when he recognized AD Joe Karlgaard.

...so that extension's as good as in the bag now, eh?

Persoanlly, hope the new Rice prez will actually care enough about athletics as a marketing vehicle for the school to get some major things done, but it's looking a lot more like too late to the show. Perhaps if they split off the top 40-60 schools we can have a nicer sandbox in which to play. But I do like this guy more than Leebun.

Reggie's downside for athletics is likely what David's upside was... and I don't mean that as an insult to David... I think Reggie just understands athletics and athletes that much better, while David's primary understanding seemed to be SAT scores and the financial leverage of foreign students. I think Reggie can learn from what David did, but bring it back much more in to balance.

Reggie's upside for athletics (which is what I am hoping for) would have given us Baylor's spot in the Big12 decades ago and we'd be once again playing UT (and being competitive as we were at the time) on the anniversary of JFKs speech rather than McNeese. reggie's upside is that we are Stanford in its heyday.
