93 MPH heater. Not bad. The tally so far via the transfer portal-- 3 relief pitchers, two of whom have yet to have success at the D1 level. I suppose Durke (ULaLa transfer) has starter potential if he can find a solution to this control issues. Unless we can land a bonafide, proven starter out of the transfer portal, it still looks like our pool of starters are: Chandler, Smith, Brogdon (if finally healthy), Stratton (true Freshman) and Matthews (if healthy).

Well, if can live up to his surname, he and the Owls will do well!
Welcome Jackson!

Interesting situation of a potential recruit (?). I have no inside info, but this guy from Wylie, Tx, just decommitted from Baylor after decommitting from Stanford last year. Very good student. SS with blazing speed...

Based on Chieto's latest tweet ("solidifying") it appears we just landed another one. Having said that, "solidifying" doesn't infer a big get, but rather another piece (like our other 3 transfers) that simply provides reinforcements.

RE: [split] Baseball Recruiting 2021 and beyond
I a surprise move, we just lost Cooper Chandler, who signed a free agent contract with the Orioles.
Big loss. Makes it all the more important that both Brogdon and Caleb Matthews come back fully healthy and demonstrate that they provide quality work as starting pitchers. The only returning starter from last year's rotation is now Parker Smith, who's have an outstanding Summer in the California League. Still way too early, but at this point I'd guess our weekend rotation with be Brogdon, Smith and Stratton.
We have shored up our bullpen via the transfer portal, but we desperately need another one or two experienced starting pitchers. Not sure if there is anyone of quality left.

It's been in the works for awhile. Was supposed to be operational during the baseball season, but never got done. Supposedly, should be ready by the time players return to campus late August/early September. Will measure all the analytics and provide simulation of opposing pitchers.

We do have another transfer - Max Johnson, a middle infielder from Indiana University (and Mason, Ohio). He didn't have amazing numbers his freshman year at IU, but did start 10 games - mostly during conference play. And he was fairly highly regarded coming out of high school.
3 years of eligibility.

He must be the guy Jose tweeted about last week. Adds depth, but I don't see him as a starter or impact player. Here's his bio...

I'm all for analytics, but they don't replace talent as was demonstrated by the much-hyped pitching lab last season. Recruiting is still the key.

I agree 100%, but I'd think that a recruit would be more likely to want to attend a school that gives them the best shot at being successful... and I'd think much like any sport... trends and tendencies, down and distance are part of a successful plan.
Being seen on the leading edge of things like this isn't a game changer, but it is certainly going to make a difference at the margin.

Just how good has recruiting been for 2023? Has it improved relative to last few years?

The lab wasn’t a factor last year. It was completed mid February, the staff can’t implement that as a development tool beyond extremely surface level changes. It needs time to collect data before making changes. Everyone wanted immediate changes. Not going to happen for a program like Rice.

The changes don't take effect that quickly. You have to execute them correctly, over and over, until they become ingrained in your muscle memory. Until that happens, there is always a tendency in high-pressure situations to revert subconsciously to your old ways. Or perhaps worse, to get caught in between and double cross.

All true, but it didn't temper the hype. That's the problem.

Temper the hype? There is reality and there is recruiting material. Strike while the iron is hot for recruiting and have a realistic understanding behind the scenes of what’s happening.
