OT: Today I met a bunch of ESPN personalities
I saw Elle Duncan speaking, met Michael Eaves for the second time (I met him originally in 2007), met Monica McNutt and Kimberly A. Martin, all within minutes of each other. It was an awesome day.

I think I'd shoot myself if I bumped into a room of all those guys. In fairness, aside from the ex-athletes that I greatly respect, I don't think I'd recognize anybody else these days.

At this point the only ESPN people I know are the ones from around 2000-2012, then I quit watching.

Met Chris Fowler and Dick Vitale in Indy, both were very nice guys. Vitale is no different in person than what you see on TV.

Who?

I only watch ESPN when my Bearcats are playing. Congrats though for you though if you met some folks you watch.

Went to an event hosted by Maria Taylor a few years back. She's hard not to recognize. She's thin and over 6 feet tall. She was towering over a bunch of ex-football players on the stage (and she probably would have been taller even without the heels). Didn't meet her, but did meet Herschel Walker, who's a pretty good guy.

I forgot to mention I also met SportsCenter anchor Ryan Smith.

Kyle: I suspect Dickie V lacks an “off” switch. And I say that as someone who likes him.

Michael Eaves is my fraternity brother. I'm a couple of years ahead of Mike. It's weird seeing him on TV at ESPN, although for a long time he worked for Fox out in LA -- and did things like the PAC10 Basketball Tournament - so I'd see him from time to time.

Here's a kinda cool story ....

Right out of college I worked for my fraternity as Director of Alumni Development. We were honoring several alums at a convention, where several hundred student leaders also attended undergoing leadership training type things. Michael was one of the students from our chapter there taht year. Anyway ...

One of the alums we were honoring was ESPN SportsCenter anchor Dan Patrick. This was probably 1994? Maybe 1993. At the height of the popularity of SportsCenter. I got my guys some one-on-one face time with Dan before the dinner and awards were presented. Michael Eaves shook his hand and said "I wanna do exactly what you're doing." Dan Patrick went on to share some things he needed to do in order to achieve his goal.

Fast forward 25 years or so ... And there he is. At ESPN, hosting SportsCenter on the regular.

Super nice guy, never forgets a face or name and works a room better than a top shelf politician. I saw him in action at the Eiteljorg Museum and the convention center attached to the old RCA Dome. He literally knows everybody.

I can't recall having ever heard/seen the four ESPN folks. Maybe I need to be more aware.

I'm not a fan of Dick V.'s broadcasting style. But his first game back this past season (and when he got emotional) ... that hit me. Dickie represents college hoops in the 1980s, and there is value in that. I fondly recall the old Big East, Metro Conference, etc., games and the "city teams" of that decade (Georgetown, Cincy, Louisville, Marquette, DePaul, Nova, St. John's, Memphis, the Cuse, Pitt, etc.) DV was on top of it back then.

Vitale seems fully sincere and I respect him for that.

Vitale is sincere, but I've felt he's fallen victim to becoming the "Dickie V" character as years go by. The same could be said for Jim (Mad Money) Cramer.

At its extreme, the character takes over the man. At some point, Archie Leach actually became Cary Grant; there is no Richard Fliehr anymore, just Ric Flair.

Excellent point. I agree. And it's one reason (among many) I no longer want to listen to Dick broadcast.

Your argument can be applied to popular music artists, too. For example, I would argue the "character" of both the Rolling Stones and the Red Hot Chili Peppers has long been a bigger deal than the specific music of the two bands. And that somewhat cheapens the music for me.

Of course, and to be consistent, some Nashvillians would contend there is no more William (I will refrain from using my last name) and now, simply and only, Bill Dazzle.

Not really the people I'd want to run into, honestly. All the ESPN anchors I like are from way back, not mostly the current ones.

I couldn't name a sportscenter anchor today. I have even stopped watching College Game Day.
