I don't even believe that, no way the B12 is pursuing any Big school.

P5 commissioners are smart people. They're not living in an alternate reality where they think they can poach B1G/SEC schools, and they're not going to do something unanimously ludicrous that turns them into a punchline. This journalist just isn't knowledgeable in the basics of realignment and naively fell for a source who either (a) is completely clueless or (b) had an agenda of trying to embarrass the Big XII publicly.

Conference commissioners aren’t the boss; university presidents are the boss. And as I’m sure you know, sometimes, you have to do “due diligence” for your boss to convince them that something is impossible.

It's like those outrageous YouTube videos. Naive people are their target audience as they eat that **** up and fill their pockets with ad revenue.

To be fair, this particular story came from the legitimate St. Paul Pioneer Press that's a real newspaper with a real University of Minnesota beat. So, it's probably true that someone from the Big 12 tried contacting Minnesota. The downstream blogs and message boards then blew it out of proportion.

The biggest thing in conference realignment is that one-way contact is irrelevant. It needs to be *reciprocal* to actually matter. Conference A contacting School X or vice versa is meaningless without reciprocity. The fact that a league might be spamming everyone in the P5 with offers like a telemarketer doesn't mean anything unless a school actually picks up the phone (and it's the same in reverse for schools looking to join certain conferences).

RE: ...Minnesota to the BIG XII?
While a bit ludicrous, maybe a better question is "Why Minnesota?" The Big 12 is already stretches from Utah to Florida, so schools like Rutgers/Maryland wouldn't necessarily be out of range.

But, Minnesota does fit with what I might consider "Big 12 culture." Minnesota is not as "core" to the Big 10 as is Ohio State/Penn State/Michigan. It is not Rutgers/Maryland in the far corner of the league. Minnesota is contiguous with the Big 12 via Iowa State.

It's not quite Missouri to the Big 10 but I can kind of see it as KY to the Big 10 type rumor.

The core Big 10 are the upper Midwest/Great Lakes schools. Minnesota is as core to the Big 10 as Ohio State/Wisconsin/Michigan.

It’s not I don’t think Minnesota couldn’t fit with the Big 12 schools, it just seems like a weird selection. Why Minnesota? If you are going to swing for the fences, then why not Missouri or Nebraska?

Maybe they tried for those too.

But if no one else leaked their meetings, the question is: why was Minn's leaked?

I feel like this started when someone from a B12 school was talking to someone who they happen to be friends with at Minnesota about all the realignment going made a joke along the lines of "hey, with everyone moving y'all want in on the B12?"

And then it snowballed from there.

edit: realized I made the quote from the perspective of a B12 school and therefore corrected "you all" to "y'all"

This is a hilarious idea, imo.

It's like, IDK, Texas AM to the Big 12.

I agree with this piece - "In his first Big 12 Media Days, Yormark announced the Big 12 is “open for business.”

But if anybody in the Big 12 actually thought Minnesota was gettable, perhaps the league office is better served being open for mandatory drug testing."

I really think some source made this crap up or misconstrued it to make the Big XII look bad. That person was hoping for press exactly like this.

No one has corroborated it, and it wasn't reported by someone with a proven track record in realignment.

What’s laughable is that anyone bought this.

Why would the Big 12 even want or target MN? There are several equivalents actually in peril. Ones that actually have an impact on realignment. Adding any 4 corner does more for the Big 12 than MN or Missouri.

Maybe, but imagine a different "4 corners" of MN, IA, NE, and MO.

Yes it's unlikely.

But if that was available, I think the B12 would accept that group in a heartbeat.

The conversation got to "Joe in the Big12 head office said Minnesota moving to the Big12 would increase the media value of both conferences" at which point the reporter at another table in the bar started taking notes.

Idk, but I'd think it was to make the Big XII look foolish; also, it may have been intended as a sympathetic gesture to the PAC-12 left-behinds.

RE: ...Minnesota to the BIG XII?
The only schools out the BigTen that make sense for the Big12 is Iowa and Nebraska. Why would one think a northern school like Minnesota would go to the Big12??? If they could pull those two teams out of the BigTen which I doubt even with a guarantee $100million payout it would make for a better cohesive footprint for the Big12. If the Big12 was a monster conference like the SEC is currently with a huge per school payout then the teams they should be headhunting are former members along with some additional revenue. I mean they should go after Nebraska, Iowa, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Missouri, Colorado, Arizona, Arizona St, Utah and see if they can bring in some of these teams, but in order to do that you need to be a big time player and the Big12 isn’t that. I think the Minnesota stuff was nothing more the smoke and mirrors to cover up something or to keep people from finding out more less. Just doesn’t make any sense to go after that one school.

If Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Nebraska came to the Big XII, Minnesota and Wisconsin hockey could join the NCHC.

So as others have noted, the articles all seem to be sourced from:

https://www.twincities.com/2022/07/30/ch...ns-payday/

[quote]
The Big 12 Conference is said to be quietly seeking the Gophers, but Minnesota can’t afford the revenue loss of a new Big Ten Network deal, which, with the expansion of USC and UCLA in two years, could be worth nearly $100 million a year.

That's all it said.
