IMO, the 1985 team was better that 2008.

And the Memphis staff absolutely tanked that Missouri NCAA game.

I don't think so.

That 2002 Wagner team was a very talented bunch. If they had gotten it together earlier in the year (like the recent NIT champ team), they might have done some serious damage in the big tournament.

I remember that team was 20-4 at one point but we played a horrific OOC schedule. Lost 3 in a row to drop to 20-7 and had to win on the road against top 5 Cincy last game of the season to get in... almost pulled it off

It amazes me that anyone with any common sense thinks that 1985 was better. 2008 was a basket away from being one of the top 5 teams of all time. As it is, they are easily a top 25 team all time. 1985 beat UAB, Boston College and Oklahoma by a combined 5 points, got handled by Villanova, and didn't even make the final. While that was happening, we clobbered Michigan State, Texas and UCLA by a combined 51 points.

1985 barely scraped by against mediocre teams and lost to two bad ones.

83 and 84 teams were probably better…Lee was much better those years…….just had to deal with Phi Slama Jama 2 years in a row.

it was Texas, not Oklahoma in 2008….the Mich State game was the most impressive performance in Tiger history in my opinion.

Ironic you compared the 2002 team to the recent NIT champ team. 2002 team also won the NIT.

Of course, Texas, I'll fix it.

2008 played a much tougher schedule, lost 2 less games despite playing 6 more games, and outscored opponents by an average of 18 points, and were 2 baskets away from being undefeated. 1985 lost to South Carolina and Detroit Mercy, and barely beat Boston College and UAB.

2008 completely shut down Drew Neitzel, Darren Collison, DJ Augustin, and AJ Abrams. 2008 would have destroyed Turner and Askew. 2008 beats 1985 by 15.

But that team helped put Tiger hoops on the national radar. My father was there in New York City on the bench as a MSU trainer. Now 91, Pops talks about that game to this day. He still loves his Tigers.

What a game!

Depends on what the rules are. Shot clock? 3 point shot? Turner was smaller but Askew was 6-5 and a sculpted tank. He was able to guard Jordan really well when he was in Seattle. Plus Cal never played zone and Lee would have given them trouble

No shot clock or 3 point shot would have made it impossible for 1985 to get the ball inside. Rose and Anderson were so long, they could have packed it in and dared both to shoot.

Lee fouled out of 2 games and had 4 fouls in the other. If you double the number of possessions, there is no way Lee lasts in any of the games, and this doesn't take into account how slow he was getting up and down the court, much slower than Kevin Love. Also, if you halve the number of possessions, you more than likely keep Dorsey out of any appreciable foul trouble.

With the shot clock and 3 point line, it would have been a massacre.

We know for sure that Turner would never score and Askew only averaged 8.3 points per game. Turner was a smaller version of Collison and Augustin.

In the 4 games against UAB, Boston College, Oklahoma and Villanova, Askew scored a TOTAL of 7 points, against guards that weren't half as good as what 2008 faced.

Pretend he didn't get hurt? No excuses, the team should have been exactly the same with or without him. See how completely stupid that sounds? You still can't resist mentioning the injury because you know it was a huge blow to the team.

In 1985, Boyd averaged 2.9 points and Becton averaged 5.2 points. The next three off of the bench were Wilfong, Bailey and McCoy. 2008 had Mack, Taggart, Kemp and Allen. It would have been a bloodbath.

Dorsey and Dozier also had foul issues. Don’t get me wrong I think the 2008 team was better but let’s not act like Bedford and Lee or even Turner were chopped liver
