MyBB Top 25 All Time Tiger's Basketball Teams
Saw this on the Memphis Tigers fans Facebook page. It was posted by Matthew MC Howell. It seems like a pretty good and well thought out list.

Facebook - Memphis Tigers Basketball Fans

All-time top 25

#25) 2021 UM 20-8
Nolley, Quinones, Williams/ NIT champs/ 41st in final USA today coaches poll/ 34th Simple Rated System aka SRS. Some nice talent peaked at the right time and proved they should’ve been in the big dance. This was our 100th team in history

#24) 1989 MSU 21-11
Perry, E.Smith, Gibson/1st rd NCAA/ 36th SRS . The 89 team is the ONLY team in tiger history to beat 2 top ten teams back to back in the regular season when they beat Florida state and Louisville that Feb

#23) 2014 UM 24-10
Jackson, Nichols, Goodwin /2nd rd NCAA/28th final USA today coaches poll/ 35th in SRS. Pastner went 4-6 against top 25 teams and spent every week in the AP top 25 until the final poll

#22) 1988 MSU 20-12
Perry, Boyd, R.Douglas/ 2nd rd NCAA/47in SRS/ even though they lost Grey and Alexander mid season they still finished strong

#21) 1976 MSU 21-9
Cook, Reed, Hillard /1st rd NCAA/39th in SRS/ Wayne Yates was 2-2 against the top 25

#20) 2022 UM 22-11
Duren, Quinones, Williams/2nd rd NCAA/22nd SRS/35th final USAtoday coaches poll/31st final AP poll/I heard that the players didn't get along to well. I would say they did pretty good in spite of the locker room issues

#19) 1993 MSU 20-12
Hardaway, B.Smith, A.Douglas / 1st rd NCAA/34th SRS/ Not to bad of a finish after starting off 4-5 and losing David Vaughn for the season

#18) 1996 UM 22-8
Wright, Henderson, Garner / 1st rd NCAA/ 16th final AP poll/28th SRS/ man no disrespect to Malik Rose he is probably a nice guy but I hate that dude. The 1996 team spent many weeks in the top 10 that year and could've been one of our best ever had it not been for Rose and Drexel

#17) 2003 UM 23-7
Massie, Burks, Barron/1st round NCAA/34th SRS/19th final AP/27th final USAtoday coaches poll. After 7 years not making the big dance they finally broke through

#16) 2012 UM 26-9
Barton, Jackson, Black/ 1st rd NCAA/ 14th SRS. Pastner and the guys won the C-usa regular season title and the C-usa touney title

#15) 2004 UM 22-8
Banks, Burks, Carney/ 2nd rd NCAA/ 32 SRS/ 27th final USA today coaches poll/ 23rd final AP. Coach Cal had them back dancing for the second strait year

#14) 1995 UM 24-10
Wright, Vaughn, Henderson/ sweet16/ 31st SRS/ 14th final USAtoday coaches poll. A weak schedule and lack of quality wins kept Finch and the guys out of the top 25 the entire season but they showed up that March for real

#13) 1992 MSU 23-11
Hardaway, Vaughn, Madlock/ elite 8/ 36th SRS/ 17th final USA today coaches poll. Going into the conference tournament Pennys first squad was 18-9 and looking like a NIT team...that changed real quick

#12) 2013 UM 31-5
Jackson, Thomas, Crawford/ 2nd rd NCAA/ 18th final USA today coaches poll/19th final AP poll/43rd SRS. Only 2 games against top 25 and they were both bad loses but still 31 wins not to shabby

#11) 2009 UM 33-4
Evans, Anderson, Dozier/ sweet16/ 4th SRS/ 4th final AP/ 9th final USA today coaches/ If Calipari would've put Preston Laird on Demarre Carroll we would"ve been national champs

#10) 1987 MSU 26-8
Grey, Askew,Alexander/ Metro tourney champ/ 19th SRS/ banned from post season play the tigers national championship was stomping loserville on their home floor

#9) 1982 MSU 24-5
Lee, Haynes, Parks/ sweet16/ 9th final AP/ 22nd SRS/ Metro reg season champ and tourney champ. Ba-ba-ba-ba basketbawww was a hot ticket those days

#8) 1983 MSU 23-8
Lee, Parks, Haynes/ sweet16/13th SRS/17th final AP. Lee was the mane

#7) 1986 MSU 28-6
Bedford, Holmes, Turner/ 2nd round NCAA/ 12th final AP/ 11th SRS. I have them this high because I just believe head to head they are that good and got ripped off playing LSU on their home floor in the big dance. We also had Askew but Batman actually had better numbers then our future NBA player

#6) 1984 MSU 26-7
Lee,Haynes,Turner/ sweet16/ 16th final AP/ 16th SRS/metro reg season champ and metro tourney champ. Captain Kirk had them in warp speed

#5) 1973 MSU 24-6
Finch, Kenon, Robinson/ NCAA finalist/ 16th SRS/ 12th final AP. I wasn't alive but I love hearing the stories about this magical season

#4) 2007 UM 33-4
CDR,Hunt,Dorsey/ elite8/ 7th SRS/ 5th final AP/ 7th final USA today coaches/ Cusa reg season and tourney champ. Say what you want about Coach Cal but he put together some great teams

#3) 2006 UM 33-4
Carney, S.Williams, Washington/ elite8/ 4th final AP/ 7th SRS/ 6th final USA today coaches poll/ Cusa reg season and tourney champ. Can someone tell me why Rodney Carneys Memphis 10 jersey is not hanging in the rafters???

#2) 1985 MSU 31-4
Lee, Bedford, Turner /Final 4/ 5th final AP/ 13th SRS/ metro reg season and tourney champ. Lees last dance would've turned out different had that guy on villanova not did all that cocaine before the game and had super powers

#1) 2008 UM 38-2
Rose, CDR, Dorsey/NCAA finalist/ 2nd final AP/ 3rd SRS/2nd final USA today coaches poll. I might be slightly biased but this is maybe the best team in the history of college basketball to not win a title

Dropped out 2002 UM 27-9
Wagner, Burks, Wise /NIT champ

Others receiving votes
1957 MSU 24-6, 1975 MSU 20-7, 2011 UM 25-10, 1977 MSU 20-9
1974 MSU 19-11, 2010 UM 24-10

Great list. Totally agree putting 2008 at #1 based on quality of non-conference competition that season, domination in the 3 games they played before finals (especially the total obliteration of Michigan State in the 1st half) and of course being so close to winning the final.

I would bump 1973 up to 2nd just ahead of '85. I think I would also move 1992 up several spots. That's probably a Final Four team if they play anybody but Cincinnati in the regional final. Bearcats totally had our number that year.

RE: Top 25 All Time Tiger's Basketball Teams
The one thing about the list that is disappointing to me is that only one of them is during my time at school - 74-79. But, that is the way I remember it when I think about it a little….

1973 has to be in the top 3. 1972 needs to be on the list. The 1957 NIT finals teams isn’t even listed. Did a kid do this ? They forget the NIT was BIG in 1957 as big as the NCAA

The 2009 team being #11... thats way too low. That team was better than 2007... have the schools longest winning streak at 27 games and despite the Missouri game they were one of the best defensive teams of this era

Cal tanked that Missouri game in the 1st Half. He knew he was accepting the KYU HC job & if he won it might cause them to choose someone else.

Anyone else feel that way?

I think the board's DNA isn't about the top 25 'best''; feels like this crowd would probably put more energy in to the bottom 25...

#1 worst season has to be the year we lost to CBU. But I dunno.

I don't think they would have chosen someone else had we won, but he just wanted to get out of Dodge. I do think he tanked that game though, we were way better than Missouri

It would be close. Larry would have had trouble with Anderson’s length. Laurie would have had trouble with Rose for sure. But Kenon would have fouled Dorsey and Dozier out. Bartow would have played a 1-2-2 zone more than likely

Absolutely.

Whenever a game comes down to in-game coaching, especially if adjustments are needed, Cal.........

I can't remember.

That team was very good with the pressing zone trap.

I saw an interview on Cal done by a Kentucky interviewer. (My wife and I moved here in 2009 to be closer to our grandchildren) He detailed when he met with Mitch Barnhardt and Dr. Todd to accept the job, and wouldn't you know it, it was either the Tuesday or Thursday before the game (played on a Friday)
When I pointed that out in the comment section of the story...the interview disappeared into the ether.

we'd have beaten UCLA with some fair refs. I watched that game with my grandfather.
I remember him almost cussing every other possession about Bill Walton goaltending.

I remember the pundits talking about Dunavant and Izzo as favorites. It was important for Cal to talk to UK first (especially after they publicly snubbed him 2 years earlier).

You couldn't dunk back then. Dude kept lobbing the ball over the goal and Walton would put his hand in the cylinder and just divert the ball down.

RE: Top 25 All Time Tiger's Basketball Teams
The 1957 Memphis State team that lost to Bradley in the NIT Finals clearly would not be one of the "best" all-time Tiger squads in terms of talent. But that team helped put Tiger hoops on the national radar. My father was there in New York City on the bench as a MSU trainer. Now 91, Pops talks about that game to this day. He still loves his Tigers.
