EMU Athletic Facilities
I would like to start this thread and have it promoted to 'important.'

Seems like a good way to 'consolidate' all of our thoughts on things like SAPC, thoughts on Rynearson, improvements to George Gervin Game Above Center, soccer and lacrosse field, baseball stadium, IPF, the tracks inside Rynearson and Bowen, the golf practice facility, etc.

First, here is the EMU Athletic Department's website entry for 'facilities': https://emueagles.com/facilities

Starting with the most recent facility update, the George Gervin GA Center:

https://emueagles.com/news/2022/7/20/gen...ience.aspx

This is apparently part of a bigger package of improvements including video walls and redoing the EMU athletic Hall of Fame. The HOF was built into an obscure part of the Gervin Center and will be more prominently re-located.

Also the outdoor video will be redone (I know little about this).

RE: EMU Athletic Facilities
Just posting the link to the EMU athletics website entry for SAPC for those, such as visitors to this forum, etc. who may not be familiar with website presentation of the SAPC.

The website does justice to the SAPC. I have been in the SAPC and it is a truly modern, state of the art, athlete friendly, etc. facility.

RE: EMU Athletic Facilities
Thank you fornstarting this thread, Steve

As a newer emu fan, I can say it's really cool seeing the SAPC kick off and the G. Gervin renovations. I go to a few football games a season and would love to see Rynearson get some upgrades to more and better concession stand options, better bathroom facilities and removal of track. Huge wishlist I know, but as someone who travels to other stadiums, these are common for them.

Go Eagles!

I have few details, but I know EMU athletics have been charged with coming up with a new master plan for the West Campus athletic complex.

I don't know specifics, but the field turf, track, etc. are showing their age and the athletic department will need to make some decisions which will effect the football field and track for decades to come. (I believe one of our posters has information or feelings about how EMU T&F feels about their outdoor facilities including damage to the track by the SAPC.).

The info may come out in time with the EMU Board of Regents.

What I don't know if re-doing the Westview Apts will impact or free up any space which can be used by the athletic department. BTW, I do know EMU has turned over the old softball field to the U for non-athletic department usage.

Here is Super's post on the soccer and lacrosse fields from earlier this month (07/01).

"RE: Soccer/lacrosse field
The field is behind schedule. My guess is that the company has has other work that they need to get started. The foundation looks to be mostly done getting it ready for the turf. I thought it was already here. They still need to get the team's dugout started.?

RE: EMU Athletic Facilities
Here is one of the most innovate designs I've seen for a collegiate stadium with a track. Richmond's colors are blue and red...

Richmond used red for the track transfer points and blue (their school color) for the lanes.

Creative!!

https://www.google.com/maps/place/E.+Cla...77.5388553

Here is another photo. Again, it shows how getting away from red helps camouflage the distance from the field and the stands.

https://www.google.com/maps/place/E.+Cla...77.5388553

As far as EMU, if we keep the track within Rynearson, I would think green lanes would be best. Maybe use gray or red for the track transfer points to add some color 'relief.'

RE: EMU Athletic Facilities
I think in a perfect world where money is no obstacle the track is removed from within Rynearson (like many have said) AND the track and field program gets a similar facility to what we see down the street at U-M. Maybe not all the bells and whistles of their indoor facility (I believe part of that facility is all-sport purpose as well), but something of their own would be fantastic for that program.

They are our most successful program. I'd like to see them get a little something for doing more with less over the years.

Do we go back to the gray turf once that is replaced?

Get rid of the football field! Football is a lost cause as EMU won’t compete with the NILs. Rebuild it as a track stadium only.

Buuuuhhhhh, Ramy, you serious?

I have nothing against track and I am with the other posters that they deserve their own facility. What woukd the cost be?

I also think the football team would benefit from not having it within Rynearson. It's a step in the right direction for both programs to separate

EMU may not be able to contend with NIL money but that won't stop them from competing and giving us something to root for.

I'll give you an empirical observation I made while looking at stadiums with tracks.

Our track has NINE lanes. Others have say 6 or 7.

Also our stands have a curvature which moves the seats near mid-field back even further.

I'm guessing a 6 lane track and straight stands would put the mid-field stands 10 - 15 feet closer to the field.

Pretty sure regulation tracks must have 8 lanes.

I'd love to see them remove the track and slide the whole field southwest toward the convocation center, then rebuild the visitor's stands and move them in tight to the field. It would be awesome if they would turn the grass section near the convocation center into a hillside seating student section like they have at Virginia. That was my favorite stadium of all the ones we saw when we were doing Alex's visits:

I understand what you are saying, but the west stands really need to be done with a new press box. That is priority #1 at Rynearson.

I was told that moving the field is expensive. I had suggested that to an athletic department official. I would have loved to see the field moved say 50 - 75 feet to the south.

We have the 'worst of all possible worlds' - remove the track and NEITHER the SAPC nor the hillside are close to the field. And we can't move the Gervin GA Center nor the SAPC.

The decision would have had to PRECEDE building of the SAPC.

Christian Spears had the best solution (I think it included winning the lottery) and rebuild and rename and do what we all want. It would have been done in two phases with the west stands torn down first and rebuilt closer to the field and then the following year tear down the east stands. The SAPC would have been closer to the north end zone.

Money is the root of all evil and the reason so many dreams are dashed.

If they moved the field south toward the Convo, they could take advantage of the space between the SAPC and the field by putting in a 50-yard half field running sideways from stand to stand that would serve as additional outdoor practice space.

May sound silly to some, but they could put up temporary seats in the north end zone and seat the band there. It wold close the other end of the horseshoe and fill the space from the end line and the SAPC.

Here is how Howard does it...

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Greene...77.0207861

One thing about Howard's stadium. It may be a glorified high school or JUCO stadium but it is 'right sized.' Attended two games last year there and fans filled all the sideline seats, end zone seats and some standing on the track in the NE corner. That is a great atmosphere. Better 100% of a small stadium than 25% of a bigger one.

Flexible stands like that would be nice, and I agree fully with your comment about filling the stands...any of us who run special events would much rather squeeze 100 people into a smaller space than have the same 100 in a space large enough for 200. It's the same people, but a much different feel.
