Next CFP: Scheduling Around the NFL Calendar
Let's assume the 6+6 format, or a straight 12 format, with December first round games and New Year's Day quarterfinals. (One QF on either Jan 2 or Dec 31). 2 Semifinals in January and then a National Championship game. And at least 7 days between rounds--nobody should be playing a playoff game on 6 days rest.

CFP honcho Bill Hancock has said that the NCG is on a Monday because fans have to travel, and a Monday is at least weekend-adjacent.

The NFL season will now run 18 weeks, with 2 Saturday games on Week 18, and 6 playoff games on Wild Card Weekend--2 on Saturday, 3 on Sunday, 1 on Monday.

So Saturday is out, Sunday was never an option. And now at least one Monday is now spoken for.

That leaves Friday, and since there are only so many hours in prime time, a game on Thursday.

So something like

First Round:
2nd/3rd Saturday in December. 2 games on campus
3rd/4th Saturday in December. 2 games on campus
EDIT: I forgot that the NFL now plays a Saturday night game in Week 15, kicked off at 8:20 last year. So at least one of these games kicks off at noon or so.

Quarterfinals
New Years Day (or Jan 2). 12:30 QF bowl, 5:00 QF Rose Bowl, 8:30 QF Bowl.
New YEars Eve: QF Bowl (If Jan 1 is a Sunday, 4th QF is probably on Tues Jan 3)

Semifinals
SEcond Thursday in January (Jan 8-14)
Friday, Day after Second Thurdsay (Jan 9-15)

National Championship Game
Friday, 8 days after Second Thursday in January. (Jan 16-22)
Or Monday, 11 days after second Thursday in January. (Jan 19-25). Edit.

Comments? Did I miss something important?

I'm assuming the Rose Bowl gets a permanent QF slot, and lets the other 5 NY6 bowls rotate the 3 QF's and 2 semis, and the semifinal bowls don't play a New Years' Day/Eve/Week game.

EDIT: Here it is in more calendar-ish form. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...sp=sharing

The Rose Bowl with the Pac 10 basically gutted should be open .... you can leave the caveat that if a Big Ten School makes it that far they go to the Rose Bowl ... New Years Day and same time slot ...

RE: Next CFP: Scheduling Around the NFL Calendar
That’s essentially how I see it: the Thursday and Friday that are at least 7 days after respective quarterfinals would be the semifinal dates. My only difference is that I believe that there would be more time elapsed for the final where it would be on the Monday evening at least 1 week following the semifinal round (similar to how the national championship game timing works now). That would optimize both travel and TV ratings for the NCG.

I figure the Rose Bowl has to schedule months/years in advance. They can't be moving the game and parade or not, based on how the Big Ten champ ranks on the Sunday after the CCGs.

Either they rotate or not. If they don't rotate, it's simple. They're a QF, and they get the Big Ten champ if available.
IF they do rotate, it's less simple. Either the Rose Bowl gets knocked off New Years DAy (or mon jan 2) every 3 years, or they play the Rose Bowl on NYD and knock a second QF to Dec 31/ Jan 2.

The simplest solution is to slot the Rose Bowl in its traditional 5 p.m. slot, quarterfinal every year, and leave them out of the semifinal rotation.

EDIT: This doesn't fulfill everything the Rose Bowl wanted in their memo, but you can't have everything.
Rose Bowl wanted an annual quarterfinal game AND a share of the semifinal / NCG rotation. But I think the 5 p.m. New Years' Day timeslot is more important to them than getting to host a semifinal on a Thursday or Friday the week after New YEars.

It will be interesting because, on the one hand, the Big Ten-Pac-12 relationship is clearly going to be frayed going to be forward.

On the other hand… and it’s weird to think of it this way… but the Rose Bowl will now the be the first time that a top bowl game is playing in a Big Ten home stadium and market, so maybe the league becomes even *more* protective of the game.

Well, it's not a scientific survey, but it's the best data I have. The consensus from the thread I threw out a week or two ago is that Big Ten <3 the Rose Bowl, and whether it's Michigan vs Oregon or Michigan vs Georgia is of secondary importance as long as the sun is setting over the San Gabriel mountains at 5 pm. Eastern after the Rose PArade that morning.

That gets you past the Monday Night Football wildcard playoff game. It's another three days into late January, but I think we're past caring about that.

What’s with all the hate for the Rose Bowl?

It’s really quite simple—the Rose Bowl is a quarter final played on NYD on it’s typical time slot and plays host the the Big 10 and whomever advances to it from the opening round game.

Your other 3 quarter finals can be the Orange, Sugar, and Fiesta, with one on NYE and the other to on NYD, before and after the Rose Bowl. If the Sugar wants the SEC each year fine. The Orange can have the ACC if they get a bye. The Big 12 and PAC 10 can be the traditional tie ins for the Fiesta.

Why do people fall into this trap and go mental gymnastics over why the Rose Bowl can’t maintain the tradition they’ve cultivated for decades.

I don't hate the Rose Bowl. The Rose Bowl is the only traditional bowl with any added value. The Oragne, PEach, Sugar, Cotton, Fiesta Bowls are just games in big stadiums in (hopefully) destination cities. The Peach Bowl dropped their name for a while, the "Cotton Bowl" isn't in the Cotton Bowl, the Fiesta and Orange have bounced around between stadiums. If the money was right, you could move those games to Tampa, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando and Las Vegas and nobody would care.

The Rose Bowl is magic--sunset over the San Gabriel mountains, granddaddy-of-em-all, 5 pm New Years Day. Which means money.

Now, there IS resentment at the Rose Bowl and Big Ten in the south, I think. For years, the Rose Bowl was the biggest obstacle to a "true national champion", biggest obstacle to a playoff. I think, in Atlanta and Dallas and Tallahassee and NAshville, the Rose Bowl is NOT magic, and people who go on about how magical it is sound stupid. I think that was a factor in the failure of the 6+6 playoff last year--no provision was made for the Rose Bowl, and they expected the Rose Bowl and Big Ten to roll over and take it. Ooops.

Quote:It’s really quite simple—the Rose Bowl is a quarter final played on NYD on it’s typical time slot and plays host the the Big 10 and whomever advances to it from the opening round game.

If they go back to 4 major bowls instead of 6, the Rose Bowl isn't complicated at all. Rose, Sugar, Orange, Cotton/Fiesta, boom done. But I think they'll rotate in the Peach and Cotton.

If the Rose Bowl wants to be a quarterfinal every year (which makes money which means it make sense), I think they have to concede something.

The most logical concession is the semifinal rotation. There is no magic and no extra revenue added to a Rose Bowl game on Thursday January 10 or Friday January 14 compared to a game in New Orleans or Atlanta or Dallas or Tuscon, or at SoFi or Las Vegas or Charlotte or Houston or Nashville.

The NCAA would need to extend the football season calendar. Currently, the second Monday in January is season's end date. Bylaw17.11.5.2

Sure - if all of FBS just voted on a new playoff system that they want that would extend the season further, then the rule change would be a formality since those FBS schools would be the ones approving the rule change in the first place.

Things I don't know if I missed, but that really occur to me after typing this out a few days ago.

Are the stadiums going to be full for television?

The New Years' Day games should be okay--conference champions will have almost a month's notice for their fans to get their tickets and arrange travel. The opponents will be looking at a much shorter turnaround. But that's going to happen if you're playing playoff games in December.

The semifinal on Friday is obviously a short-notice game, but it's one day off of work, fly Friday morning (or afternoon if you're a real risk-taker), fly back Saturday or even Sunday. Thursday is two days off. With less than two weeks notice, when you probably just took a day or two off around New Years' to get to the quarterfinal.

And then the national championship game, but that's going to draw a national audience, plus a sizable amount of high-rollers from the host city.

But if the networks sign a 10-12 year agreement, the empty stadiums would be a problem for a later generation of AD's and commissioners.

Others may disagree, but to me, it's going to be a trade-off. Priority #1 is maximizing TV revenue. We already see that during the regular season with schools playing on off-times or off-dates (e.g. Friday night games, Tuesday MACtion, etc.). Sometimes, Priority #1 conflicts with what's best for ticket sales. I just think if push comes to shove, Priority #1 is going to prevail because it is the 99.99% driving force behind CFP expansion in the first place. Putting games on the same dates as NFL games simply isn't an option, so the college football powers that be know that their semifinal date options are inherently restricted to weeknights, so they have to make the "least bad" options for traveling fans that would generally be Monday, Friday and Thursday (in that order). Tuesday and Wednesday games should be totally off the table.

Semi-finals are going to be a hard ticket to sell. The quarters offer a NYD real-bowl destination. Why miss that chance if your team may lose and be done?

The finals are the finals. You're going to that if your team makes it.

But the semis? Your aren't going to miss the NYD's bowl. Period. If your team makes the finals you have another trip to pay for and schedule. The semis will be for old retired people with plenty of money. Other fans stay home.

You have to find a way to draw people that are not fans of the team to the semis. I'd put them both in Las Vegas.

OR let the higher seed host at home??

That's a fantastic idea! That makes a whole lot of sense to me. Vegas is honestly perfect in that regard - a long weekend location that people would like traveling to, anyway, along with direct flights to and from tons of locations. They've obviously got the hotel infrastructure to handle a huge amount of tourists coming in all at one time, too. Plus, there would likely be a fairly large number of neutral ticket buyers in that location to supplement any fans of the participating teams. There would be college football fans that would just book "Las Vegas Semifinal Week" packages regardless of whether their own teams are involved. (It's almost a supercharged in-person version of how March Madness has become one of the the busiest times of the year in Vegas.) Love it.

I'm a fan of the higher seeds hosting at home, as well, although my guess is that the powers that be want all of those corporate suite dollars that can be sold in an NFL stadium.

Orlando could be another semi-finals location I'm sure Disney would love to push for if 1 city hosts both semis. Orlando isn't too far from Daytona, Cape Canaveral, and Tampa/St. Petersburg either so more than plenty for fans to do. Camping World Stadium appears to the same capacity as Vegas and would be in a non-NFL city. Being an outdoor stadium could be a problem if weather is a concern in January (thinking more of rain than heat), but the field should be already prepped for football with hosting 2 bowl games around New Years. Maybe try to alternate with Vegas and especially in years where the west coast is hosting championship game.

Claw, brilliant idea. I feel kinda dumb for not thinking of it.

There is a case for having one game in Orlando and one in Vegas. Cover both coasts and both family/non-family vacations.

This is the biggest tragedy in what the B1G might have actually pulled off with the acquisition of USC and UCLA, The Rose bowl. The Grandaddy of them all isn't a B1G game, It's a PAC game, always has been. Now if the B1G lays claim to it, it's almost a bigger gut punch than losing the LA schools. Sad how all these things play out.
