RE: Texas Tech announces $200 million investment in football facilities
I wonder Why Texas Tech can afford to again spend over $100 million on their stadium?

Could it be that they receive at least $28 million more than us each year?

Could it be that their top 4 home games in 2022 are :

TEXAS, West Virginia,Baylor and OKLAHOMA

While our fans get:

Temple,Houston,UCF, and Tulsa?

I wonder how So AL can build a 25K+ capacity OC stadium for $78M opened in 2020 that is very nice with great sight lines & suites for $78M? And So AL does it making about 20% of the Memphis revenue. Guess those other 15K seats we need are worth $120M.

I'm guessing they already owned the land and it was done well in advance of this inflation stuff we are seeing.

I mentioned it in one of the OCS threads, but steel prices were stupidly high after they built there's. I mentioned back then that was probably my only negative to building an OCS. Those prices have only recently started coming down, but who knows when construction companies finally see the benefits of that drop.

You are spot on. This is the club we want to join. Maybe we don't belong.

Since it's OC I'd think so. We've had 60 yrs & multiple master plans to reserve a spot & own the land too. I just don't get the lack of planning - seems intentional, right?

Linkage to bond deal info

Also, Ole Miss and Florida State are two other universities that have issued debt recently (past 5 years) for improvements to their football stadiums.

Yep, that's pretty much how everyone does it but public schools in TN don't have that authority/ability (not even UTK) that function is handled by the THEC (which is stacked with UTK folks). In TN the state can issue bonds, cities can issue bonds but not public schools.

That's what interesting. Prices for things like lumber and steel shot up before inflation and have come down while inflation has gone up.

That's true. Lumber was higher during COVID because no lumber was coming down from Canada. Once they resumed production prices have come back down even with inflation.

The question I have is when did they get their OCS estimates and how much did the price jump affect them. Obviously the timing for us is bad in all of this between conference realignment and the covid impact on prices. It makes me wonder how much lower the estimates for an OCS would have been if things were still "normal". For example here are charts for steel futures. It's best to change it to monthly to see the swing. I prefer candles, but the charts default to area.

The more I see things like this the more evident it becomes to me that the Tigers aren't in the P5 not because of poor facilities, but for lack of fan support.

Actually our fan support, while not good, is demonstrably better that UH. That said there is no argument that can be made that our university has a history of investing in it's major sports when we have simply rented municipal facilities historically. You can't just discount that as an important evaluation criteria - which has been started directly by the B12.

RE: Texas Tech announces $200 million investment in football facilities
Memphis fan/booster support is not great, we all know this. With the exception of one or two boosters which the university has to turn to over and over again. Texas Tech on the other hand gets big money from the B12. And Lubbock/West Texas, has oil and cotton millionaires everywhere. Comparing Memphis and Texas Tech doesn't compute.

And comparing their schedule doesn't make sense either. Their conference is loaded with big name programs, the AAC isn't. Memphis though needs to step up and play a much better ooc schedule. That is something that is easy to do. It doesn't require money or fan support. The program just needs to do it. Even one time games or 1/3 splits. It at least gives the appearance of "want too".

If our fan support is so bad then why are you folks so upset about the university wanting to “only” spend 150 million ? You can’t have it both ways

Not sure how you got "so bad" from "not good......better than UH" (given UH got the invite meaning its not a major concern or criteria) but spending $200M on a stadium owned by the city that is already about 10K seats too big is certainly worth questioning. Further the B12 hasn't questioned our fan support (at least not publicly) but they have questioned or commented on our lack of program investment, i.e., facilities.

Lack of fan support as compared to who? Over the past few conference expansions from Rutgers to Houston - please expound.

Many of the current P5 are 'in' because they were fortunate enough to be Charter Members of their conferences. Was Memphis ever offered and turned down any such P5 membership?

Did Memphis leadership pile up decades of poor decisions regarding the football program that has led to the current situation?

The fan base is what it is because the leadership made bad decision after bad decision. Stop blaming the customer.

Take away their history and then give the Alabama fan base the Memphis football schedule and results from 1980 to 2012 and see what you have left.
