Unless ESPN really really hates UTEP which they don’t, they at least will listen to what C-USA has to say along with other providers. It’s childish to think ESPN will punish an entire conference when 11 of the 12 schools left for conferences that have an exclusive deal with them.

It's not a question of petulance on ESPN's part, but rather a question of value C-USA provides with the new lineup, if there is anything worth spending anything on.

I'm very sure ESPN will happily provide production assistance services and be willing to air content on ESPN+ and maybe ESPN3. But I doubt they are willing to pay for anything. They already have plenty of programming, in fact so much they actually made a sub-lease deal with CBSSN to air some MAC games through 2027. ESPN is already committed to the SEC game of the week on top of their other ABC/ESPN offerings, plus they have the full SEC, ACC and AAC content, significant MAC and SBC content, and very likely will continue to have large shares of the B1G, Pac-12 and Big 12 packages. They really don't need any content. But as a service provider they'll be happy to set up a "you produce it" ESPN3/ESPN+ channel. (I think of this as like Amazon, Google, et al setting up ecosystem for businesses to use where they sell their services; it's totally up to the users to sell their wares; in this sense like Google, ESPN acts like the Levi Strauss company in the gold rush days, selling jeans and wares to the miners.

But if C-USA wants to get paid they need to find somebody who is willing to pay for their product. Is CBS interested enough in having content for their channels from C-USA? Is Facebook or Amazon or somebody else interested in filler content? Frankly the filler content market is really all there is out there for C-USA.

All I can say is good luck. They have about 6 months to get something lined up and less than 3 months more to get the details ironed out and the contracts signed. Really there should be some rumors already, but there are none.

That’s not the point I was making.

There’s tons of threads and posts on this board about how ESPN still holds a grudge against C-USA from a decision that was made 11 years ago. If C-USA offers anything in return is irrelevant. The point is it’s laughable to think ESPN is punishing an entire conference that will totally be different in 2023 than the one that told ESPN to get lost in 2011.

I tend to agree. ESPN signed a deal with CUSA in 2018, right?

IMO that was evidence that there was no bad blood between them as of that time, so IMO no reason to think there is now.

Business is Business, ESPN could care less about a 11-year-old deal. If the need or want CUSA content and can get it at a price that makes sense for them they will bid.

Use your TV antenna and do a scan, you will pick up Stadium for free. They also have apps for Phones, ROku, etc. Stadium also bundled with Sling and YT TV.

I don't think Facebook is interested.

https://conferenceusa.com/news/2022/5/26...edule.aspx

They have zero games currently listed for this season.

https://conferenceusa.com/news/2021/6/1/...edule.aspx

Only had three last year.

Similar story in hoops.

I think everyone is done with the Facebook experiment.

RE: CUSA to have new TV Deal?
An issue I see looming is that Liberty can probably able to get a better deal for themselves than they will receive from C-USA.

As for the JSU fan who noted ESPN started the covid-19 year with some JSU games, well there was no content to compete with. But now you have all the heavyweights up and running full song. That small opening is closed. To get airtime on ESPN or any other network requires having more value that the other games going on; more than Nebraska vs Minnesota, more than Stanford vs Oregon; more than Tennessee vs Ole' Miss; more than North Carolina vs Georgia Tech and dozens more such games that are shunted onto conference networks, so that Ohio State vs Wisconsin, Alabama vs Texas A&M, Arizona State vs USC, Clemson vs Syracuse, et al can be put on network TV. For a couple weeks that programming depth wasn't there. But now it is again.

The proof will be in the pudding. If C-USA has value they'll get a good contract that pays them $2m or so per school annually and gives them a few linear TV games. If not, they'll be lucky to get a contract that covers production costs and shunts them to off brand digital networks.

Not sure that's really an issue--that was crystal clear when Liberty joined, and they jumped at the chance to join an FBS conference.

I believe that they might be able to swing a full-spectrum deal with ESPN, for very little money, because that's how ESPN works, they'll buy up rights. Plenty of windows for CUSA on ESPN+, maybe some sublicensing to terrible platforms like Stadium and CBS-SN (probably simulcast on ESPN+), with ESPN having the right to bump games up to linear cable if ESPN sees value in it. MAybe one Tuesday-Wednesday game a week, maybe more.

Unfortunately, I agree. There was NO WAY in hell that #23 App vs Marshall would have made the prime CBS slot. No way. Now, it turned out to be top-notch entertainment, but CBS would have been contractually obligated to the SEC if COVID hadn't hit.

JSU didnt start the Covid year on ESPN pretty sure it was Samford/Central Arkansas. JSU has started the 2018, 2019, 2021 and will this year.

On the downside, the games will be on OAN or CBN. Rimshot
