I read an article from the Atlantic proposing a method to policing social media. The gist of the article is that groups managing smaller segments of the conversation can regulate better than AI or a few minds (people) on the same topic. Maybe there is a message for the board in here somewhere. I leave it to our bright admins. Good Luck.

When I first started reading/posting here again, my first observation was that it appears to be a bunch of people yelling at each other. If I take a two week break, I notice that again. It’s like a big game of one-upmanship. Not always, but often.

On the otter hand… I try really hard to not insult other posters (other than joking around), or waste time responding to the same. I’ve got no time for that, but maybe I don’t try hard as I used to. Some of you make it damn near impossible.

Course correction for those who do not know history:

In 1963 Tiger football was at an all time high, we finished the season ranked 15th in the very at the time prestigious AP poll, we went undefeated and tied Ole Miss in the first game whom the previous year was the NCAA Champion. We had an All-American RB who Sports Illustrated featured...had over 1000 rushing at the time which was unheard of.

During the 60s, we were an excellent football team that most of the SEC team feared. That leads us into the 70's, where again Memphis State excelled until the very late 78/79 seasons when there was a player boycott between white and black players one black player was not getting paid his weekly hand shake. That completely divided the team.

During the tenure of the mid 70s Memphis State was as talented as most top tier SEC teams. The talent on those teams was nothing short of impressive. Heck we had 3 "Keith's" taken in the NFL draft. Keith Butler (still today the leading tackler for Seattle), Keith Simpson (Hamilton HS and Seattle as well) and finally Keith Wright who was all NFL rookie and lead the AFC in punt return yardage among the few.

Richard Williams took over in the late 70s, who was he - the other QB at Alabama when Joe Namath was at Alabama, he was also the "hand picked" successor by the Bear to take over - his challenges at Memphis denied him that throne - again one of the two times players boycotted the team. Richard Williams went on to coach in the NFL who had a few asst hc coach positions as being well know as one of the top two or three WR coaches in the NFL, his tenure was around 18 or so years in the NFL.

1980s our beloved HC died in a plane crash...that doesn't happen we rock the 80s. For the first time our talent was on par with most SEC teams at that time, minus Georgia and Alabama - the NFL talent was mind boggling at the time.

NOTE: For those who do not know -the schedule in the 60s was 10 games regular season and 11 games in the 70s and 80s and most of the 90s - of those Memphis State typically played a minimum of 2 to 3 SEC games most of the time 3 to 5 SEC games plus games vs Florida State, Texas AM, USC etc

NOTE: Imagine if we had those teams vs todays schedule... a 6-5 Memphis team playing 4 to 5 sec teams, Michigan, Florida state was kick ass.

So, Tiger football in the 70s and 80s minus a few years of transition was without question pretty damned good football with some freaking amazing players and coaches who were incredible.

Now you get into the more current "modern" era of football of the 2000s...BTW when Rip Scheer was hired...not in the 70s or 80s.....

Rip for all of his negative post by people had some really good teams not record wise etc - but do people even remember once or twice we finished 2 or 3rd in conference...out of conference we played again 3 to 5 SEC teams, Florida State rinse repeat....BTW, he beat Tennessee...got it...fluke...he was also the closest to beat them two other times - we should have beaten UT 3 out of 4 games in the late 90s
and early 2000s

I don't know your view on Tiger Football History but mine is very different than yours...It would be good for all younger people to read the actual history of Tiger football.

So, no Rip was not our coach during the 70s or 80s and they were terrific teams.

A retro fitted stadium is better than nothing at this point. It's our only hope to hang onto possibly and I say possibly the next moves, if we do not do this - we are left behind.

For all of those complaining, I hope you change your mind...I can tell you, you will be envious of all of us attending the opening game that season - once they figure out what that season will it will be tremendous.

Yes, a lot of posters who really know a lot of real/big info have departed here - seems to be an infection of people jealous of those who do know things then attack those who share things because "they" don't know.

This board has a personality of 13 year old's on a playground after school, lot of immature posters who make personal attacks vs good conversation.

It is what it is.

The history above can be looked up, I did it by memory after I read the post about how bad our football was in the 70s and 80s...

Griffin, I was a season ticket holder in the '70's (and still am), and I remember it pretty much the way you do. Thanks for giving a quick rundown for the younger group that visits here.

It is too bad all the good posters have left here. 03-hissyfit

But thanks for hanging in. 04-cheers

RE: Memphis Tiger Nation Is Tired
Most if not all of the negativity is driven by us getting left out of the Big 12. If history tells us anything, few things are a bigger waste of time and needless anxiety than conference affiliation.

In my lifetime, the first big conference shakeup was in 1991 when Metro broke up. FSU and South Carolina got poached, and we moved with Cincy onto the Great Midwest saying goodbye to Louisville forever along with Southern Miss and Tulane. Well, not quite. By 1995 we were right back together in an all-sports C-USA.

Everything was okay until the Big East departures of 2005. No more Louisville, Cincinnati, South Florida, DePaul and Marquette, and it was the end of the world especially for basketball. Except that we immediately reeled off the most successful 4-year stretch in program history.

In 2012 we got invited to the Big East, which promptly disintegrated and the resulting AAC was another initial disappointment. What followed was the best stretch of football we've ever had.

Yet, somehow, this time, seeing Cincinnati, Houston and UCF invited to help shore up the foundering Big 12 is really the fatal blow.

Richard WilliamSON

Lmao smh

And FYI we weren’t “bad” in the 70s. We were actually pretty good until WilliamSON found out about the Highland Hundred slush fund and cut it off

even with those programs, the Big 12 will be seen in a lesser light.
A lot like the AAC will be perceived without Cinci, Houston, or UCF. It may still need another team or 2 for more stability.
We might be able to get in on round 2...if we can right the ship under us right now.

Reading comprehension?

I facetiously said that it seemed as if Rip Scherer was the coach for 70 or 80 years. You interpreted what I said incorrectly. Nowhere did I say that he was the coach in the 1970’s or 1980’s.

You posted a lot of history to argue a point that I didn’t make. Oh, well, it’s fine with me that you still had your say.

I’m a newbie and have only been a season ticket holder since Stobart was the coach. Glad you wanted to set me straight.

The biggest difference 'this time' is NIL dollars.

Proper manipulation of NIL by the haves will obliterate the have nots over the next decade.

You will see the best G5 players each year being bought and transferring to P5s. The P5s will pick the bones of the G5 and it will gain traction and get worse every year.

An already vastly skewed playing field just got immeasurably worse.

You will see the best G5 players each year being bought and transferring to P5s. The P5s will pick the bones of the G5 and it will gain traction and get worse every year.

An already vastly skewed playing field just got immeasurably worse.

Maybe if they get rid of the one-time transfer exception it will put a damper on poaching...

But

This board is dying and probably needs a rest. My feeling is this is the longest its gone under one 'regime'. Not sure how it gets fixed. The conversation tone on this board reflects the current societal 'Gap' in our country and the general degradation and lack of civility between individuals. Leaving our admins; who have noble and good intentions; the only option of taking the heavy handed approach of suspending or banning posters and re-organizing threads incessantly as the only way to deal with posters who have come here to demean, insult and bait vs inform, debate and promote public discourse.

I read an article from the Atlantic proposing a method to policing social media. The gist of the article is that groups managing smaller segments of the conversation can regulate better than AI or a few minds (people) on the same topic. Maybe there is a message for the board in here somewhere. I leave it to our bright admins. Good Luck.

I agree with you about this board. I can't tell if some of the interaction is sarcasm, snarky or just vile. I don't think it is so much political (there is that) as it might be generational.

The traffic on this message board has diminished greatly from when I first began reading stuff on here nearly 20 years ago. I didn’t start posting for a while, but the enthusiasm and overall positive outlook of the early 2000’s has been replaced with mostly negativity, apathy and almost every discussion turning into petulant back-and-forth.

I would like to hear other peoples thoughts on this, but I just get a sense that the majority of tiger fans are at the “2 tears in a bucket mother fudge it” phase of their fandom.

Getting from 2010 to now across all research, academic and athletic metrics was a MUCH tougher lift than getting from where we are now to P5, and 50-75 in research and academic rankings

What we need is for everyone to (1) reach for their checkbooks to “give irrationally over the next 5 years and (2) to fill the stadium/Forum

I don’t hear this “doom and gloom” and I see a lot of people

Except as you so eloquently stated, "except". GoTigersGo

What you'll find is that many who buy season tickets for FB will continue to buy season tickets. But giving "irrationally"? No, we've been had again by shortsighted university leadership that is afraid to challenge the status quo, won't decide the university is better off leading than falling in line to the city. Most will not give the city funding for a city facility.

What metrics sustain your opinion/conclusion?

The program is riding the best sustained success in history, has been deemed a Top 25 program over the past 7-8 years, and is widely projected to be on the listing of P programs when alignment is completed

Why? There will be 5 conferences of 16 teams to assure enough scheduling to play a 12 game schedule. TV eyeballs/money dictates this….and not petty jealousies and sentiments.

Memphis will be in that 80 programs.

If you feel that way, find some other outlets for your pessimism because it serves no purpose here.

I don't think it will turn out quite that bad. Even P5 programs with seemingly unlimited NIL money don't have unlimited playing time. They can poach top G5 talent, but at some point that starts bumping their existing players off the field and into the transfer portal.

It will also reduce scholarships available for incoming freshman, so some of them will have to go to the G5. We may find that our rosters get younger but more talented as we start getting more of the kids who would have otherwise signed with P5 programs. They will leave in a year or two if they're good, but that's no different that what we've faced for years in basketball with stars leaving for the pros.

I love the “find some other team” crowd. I’ve supported the Tigers since the early 80’s, so how about you go #%*# yourself, azzhole?
