RE: CUSA to have new TV Deal?
(06-21-2022 12:30 PM)TTT Wrote:  If CUSA had any kind of competent leadership they'd rework CUSA.tv and establish an A/V/telecom equipment list standard that each school must adhere to. (Certain model cameras/mics/certain # of PbP/color analysts etc.). And require each school to operate it entirely in-house (or outsource at the school's expense)...and give each school the option to sell the streams for their own revenue. Kinda like how BYU has their own stream platform (BYU-TV). Let each school make their own revenue from streaming sales/subscriptions etc. If someone wants to pick up a certain home team's stream, they'd have the signal to "lease" out to whatever larger network wanted the game. That's essentially what's going on w/ ESPN+. It's produced entirely in-house and the "signal" is pretty much handed off to ESPN and they slap their logos on the picture.

Have a LaTechSports.TV, or WKUSports.TV, or MTSUSPorts.TV....if ESPN or CBSSN or Gas Station TV wants to pick up the WKU @ La Tech Basketball game...then the network would negotiate w/ La Tech and make a deal to "carry" it. Do that for any sport/game.

Getting proper equipment and standards for broadcasting, yes! (looking at you FIU).

Filtering everything through CUSA.tv (and subsequent university pages), NO!

In a perfect world we could be on ESPN/2. Those slots are already spoken for. Instead, we need a deal with a known streaming provider. One that is already installed on 99% of smart TVs and streaming boxes. I don't care if it is YouTube, AppleTV, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Peacock, Hulu, etc. Just partner with one of the major players. Get production values up. Instead of big payouts take big promotion instead. If a user opens the app have C-USA athletics be on the big scrolling banner of content at the top.

TBS/TNT could be in play again. TBS used to cover college football at one time. Maybe taking baby steps back into broadcasting college football could work.

Maybe...but I'm not sure the ratings would be high enough for them.

TBS and TNT going to broadcast CUSA games?!? Insane drivel.

We did have NFL Network as a partner for a while (which I never thought would happen). So it wouldn't be the first time a bigger cable network showed interest (granted TBS/TNT are more mainstream than NFL Network).

Due to terrible management on both the C-USA and NFL Network side, they only picked up the 2nd/3rd tier rights to games, so the showcased matchups were mostly awful. After seeing how little interest there was in the worst FBS football available, NFL Network backed away from the table. If they had shown the best matchups available then it could have worked out a little better for both parties.

I'm interested to see what arises out of this. Obviously CUSA is going to get a TV deal. It's silly to think they won't.

Agree

I think CUSAs options are:

ESPN: maybe 5 games on linear and the rest on ESPN+

Status Quo: CBS/Stadium - CBSSN and Stadium will probably take a package like they have now with the rest on ESPN+. BUT No one seems to like this so I don't know how likely it is.

Flosports: If CUSA wants the most money Flo will give them the most money. But if they think there exposure is bad now.

I think they go with ESPN and get what they can get on linear channels with everything else on ESPN+. Maybe ESPN will sublicense some games to CBSSN like they do the MAC

CBS Sports Network needs to work on their availability if they want to be seen as a viable exposure network. They are only on the more expensive packages from most every TV and streaming provider. I can pay $90 a month on a promo from DirecTV to get it, or I can pay AppleTV $5. I get that DirecTV has a lot more content in that $90, but the majority of it is crap I don't want or need. Traditional TV service is dying, whoever C-USA's next partner is, I hope they understand that.

But DoubleRSU is right. CUSA 4.0 can't expect much money right out of the gate but exposure is important. CBSSN is in enough homes that football fans can find it.

Stadium has an OTA channel across the entire country and they also stream their content. If CUSA could work out a deal with Stadium similar to how ESPN+ works their deals, then I think it would work.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stadium_(sports_network)
I think Stadium could work, but I think they need to work on their affiliate network. Right now they are relegated to subchannel's in most markets. Many don't even broadcast in HD. If they can help their affiliates broadcast in HD and add more affiliates in more markets then I think a Nationwide OTA+Streaming partner would be great for both die hard and casual fans.
Or as part of the new deal with Sinclair, they get to put games on both Bally Sports and Stadium.

Just a hunch, seeing ESPN wanting them on Tues & Weds to replace SBC teams. See SBC moving to ESPNU and games sold to CBSSports.

With Bally Sports + launching maybe they do go all in with Bally.
All but Liberty have a Bally RSN and Liberty could use MASN.

Or perhaps they do some type of combo with FloSports for Streaming and Ballys/MASN for linear

I think we will see CBSSN & ESPN+ extend their current deal, I also think ESPN will try and lock up CUSAfor 10 years like they did the Mac a few years back. The thing is with the membership going from 14 to 9, they could get the same amount 6.4M and the 9 schools will recieve a bigger payout.

I think it will be interesting to see what happens to the package of games that Stadium Airs. Will Bally's or Flo Sports get into the mix for the 12 FB games and

I think this is what will happen also. They're going to get a deal. The question is that CUSA doesn't have a lot of power at the negotiation table IMHO and how much will be offered? I want to see a good deal for our old conference mates, NMSU et al. It's "you'll take what we give you and like it" kind of thing.

Back when I had cable it was on there too without using an antenna.

With Suddenlink in the Charleston area it was 125, I believe. It was right before a block of TBS, TNT, ESPN, ESPN2 started. It wasn't in HD however.

RE: CUSA to have new TV Deal?
I think CBSSN is fine to have as the Tier 1 partner. However, CUSA needs to work it out to get their CCG gets put onto CBS. I also think it would be beneficial to minimize how many partners CUSA has, and be willing to play a few mid week ESPN games. It should be kept as:

Tier 1- CBSSN (Conference Championship Game on CBS).
Tier 2- ESPN (Realizing that it will mostly be ESPN+).

Some of their fans think CBSSN is in 100M homes. More than ESPN. So maybe they're happy with the championship on CBSSN.

I don’t think you’ll see any C-USA CCG after this year. Doesn’t make any sense with 9 teams.

What C-USA can do is sell its basketball product starting with the “100 Miles of Hate” and “The Battle of I-10.”

Maybe move a game or two during championship weekend if it’s of national significance. For example ranked Liberty over a 9 win Louisiana Tech could give the conference some publicity. Other than the MWC CCG, there’s nothing on any CBS channel on that weekend. Navy vs Army is until the following weekend so there’s no schedule conflict but that’s up to C-USA and CBS and I’m not holding my breath on that one.
