Rowan Still Eyeing D1

They might be trying to get a Waiver like St. Thomas, Minn. With that size of project? They might try for AEC and try to get an affiliate to either CAA or Big South for football.

The way they dominated D-3 in football, I always wondered why they never moved up.

Rowan University has improved their academic profile since Henry Rowan have $100,000,000 to Glassboro State College. They changed their name to Rowan and eventually upgraded to university status. However, Henry Rowan has passed away and Rowan has no other booster to fund a transition to Division 1-AA or much less D-1A.

The current President of Rowan is talking a bunch of BS about Rowan being the “first” NJ college to have a veterinarian science program. Gee, I graduated from Cook College, the land grant part of Rutgers and several of my friends and classmates graduated with veterinarian science degrees. And that was in the 1980’s.

I have lived in South Jersey all of my life and Rowan does not have the infrastructure to merit a D-1AA or D-1A invite. Name a conference which will invite Rowan? The CAA? Villanova, Delaware and now Monmouth will give the thumbs down. The Patriot? As soon as they stop laughing at that idea, another thumbs down. Let’s say they go independent for football. Where are they going to park their Olympic sports? Good luck with the MAAC, the NEC or the America East.

Threatened? Please. I know New Jersey and especially South Jersey. Rowan may have grown its enrollment to 23,000 but it is still a commuter college for the most part.

RE: D3 Rowan Still Eyeing D1, Enroollment To 40,000 and $500 million Capital Projects
Of the other state college system schools, Rowan’s the big fish. It’s said to have bothered TCNJ up the road because TCNJ became the more selective academic standount of the bunch, but didn’t seem to have the political clout Rowan has become. It was a big deal that Rowan over others got even a sliver of the UMDNJ cut some years back. And I see Rowan maybe some day being that true #2 NJ public university, but, agreed…that’s all well and good, but what conference would take them?

I mean, NJIT couldn’t get a full sniff over the years from NEC (or MAAC), and one just has to look at a map to maybe see why with respect to other, smaller NJ private schools. The carpets won’t roll out for Rowan. And NJIT probably wants nothing to do with them in AmEast, where it took what seemed like forever and a day for NJIT to finally land that bid.

I wish these schools would quit throwing money down the toilet on athletics and just focus on marketable majors.

I didn't hear anything about "threatened."

Nevertheless, Rutgers may have veterinary courses, but not a specific college for it (at least from this 2005-2007 link that came up when searching).
https://catalogs.rutgers.edu/generated/n...21127.html

Rowan will have the first veterinary SCHOOL in New Jersey and the first DVM degree. So it is something to brag about. (But it's not relevant to the athletic aspirations.)

This has been going on FOR YEARS...literally for years. It may happen...it likely will happen due to the school's location, however this was started in 2015, publicly announced in 2017...and has gotten crickets.

That said, if they come on they are likely starting in the NEC...but I do think the AEC is the right fit if, and only if, they move up to R1. The AEC has been very vocal about academics over the years, and R1 will help Rowan. Athletically, they would fit right in (we used to play Rowan in our DIII days) and bridge the gap for UMBC to NJIT and the rest of the AEC. They would need MAJOR upgrades to their football field.

Dr. G has been working the NCAA for a waiver, privately, for two years now. St Thomas was a very unique circumstance...the NCAA would be in a slippery slope realm if they said "sure, if you spend a lot of money we will move you up.". St Thomas was kicked out for spending money...Rowan isn't getting kicked out. And historically, Rowan has some sketchy NCAA history with allegations of providing the equivalent of scholarships at the DIII level...in the name of grants. No love lost there...

They will likely find a home in the NEC...and if they did EVERYTHING...and I MEAN EVERYTHING they say they will do, the AE could be the right fit. Like you, I am massively skeptical because they have bandied this about publicly since 2017...and nothing has happened. But if they did get to R1 and they did get their arena, and they did find the money for scholarships, and if they did build out their football field for 6000 seats...I could see them in a Bryant scenario.

A good sports program can create school pride, but just moving up to D1 doesn't do that.

Rowan went 2-7 in football, and they were ok in basketball, but got bounced in round 1 of the tournament.

Just based on the comments here, Rowan kinda reminds me of George Mason in some ways (school is growing quick, ~30 minutes outside of a major city, but still a commuter school). The final four run ~15 years back was a big boon for Mason, but kids applying to the school today were like 2 when that happened. These days Mason doesn't really have a ton in terms of school spirit, despite being in the A10.

Theoretically speaking, what's the soonest a school could jump from DIII to DI using the traditional DIII -> DII - > DI route? Agreed that Rowan shouldn't expect the St. Thomas treatment (at least not until we get a better sense of how the NCAA is being reformed on that and other fronts down the line) but considering the 3 way Mexican Standoff between the NEC, MAAC, and AEC for new members and the former 2 already looking at/going to the DII well, I do think Rowan has enough upside and clout to find a landing spot in the NEC or AE + Big South FB (my money would personally be on the latter).

Can't speak to that, but infrastructure isn't anything that can't be overcome on Rowan's front -they have enough resources and connections to pull it off if they want too, and probably wouldn't be as dramatic as some would think for FCS. The football stadium would def have to be renovated/expanded, but even in its current form its not bad (the stadium is hosting/hosted the 2022 DIII field hockey championships FWIW) - basketball, baseball, softball, and maybe swimming would be in need of more dramatic upgrades just by looking at the facilities page on their athletics site IMO.

But even more key than that, is that Rowan has enough clout and connections in Central/South Jersey politics to be able to position itself better for a transition as well. I could see Rowan being able to get large NJ political figures on their side by selling Rowan as being "South Jersey's team" with a move to D1. (Even though Rutgers is a state school, it is generally more associated with North/Central Jersey by way of its location.

Nah, because Rutgers had stayed in that conversation for all those years, even if just as a possibility. Annoyed people, sure, but seemingly always there. The disbelief was probably more administrative fit. That the school couldn’t keep up with the money it takes to be a Big Ten school. That’s still an issue.

Rowan may as well be West Chester or IUP with respect to location and geographically friendly athletic conference fits. The politics from those around them will not set them up for success. And not that Horizon, Big South, or ASun couldn’t be there for them (all) in some capacity, but, give me a break. The money is barely there for D1 if they could creep over that line, and a geographical outlier would pretty much kill the thing.

I'm not sure Rowan is actually still a commuter school.

This says only 9.7% of freshman lived off campus with family:

Rowan pulls from all over the state nowadays and students from north of 195 would have hour plus commutes.

Sounds like your threatened by these thoughts.. Rowan is definitely growing and becoming more popular for students… a good sports program always creates school pride.. get moving Rowan

FCS seems about right at the highest level.

Not enough higher caliber athletes in the NE and Mid Atlantic to support another mouth.

Imagine seeing this score one Saturday night. Rowan 55 Rutgers 40 in college football. With Rutgers having issues with controversies with their football program in recent years? New Jersey needs another public school playing football that will not bring controversies.
