Exclamation How to make Tiger football more important to students
Stop treating them like red headed step children!

All seats between the 40 yard lines all the way to the top behind the visiting bench should be student seats. Put the band about a third of the way up in that section. That would increase excitement at the game by a factor of double or triple.

Make certain that the stupid advertising games the students take part in pay off significantly. Every participant receives $100 credit at student book store, and winners get $1000 scholarship certificates for fees and tuition, and there should always be winners. This alone will get many more students to pick up their free tickets.

Have a drawing at the end of every home game with awards of more $100 to $500 certificates. Winner must be present to collect. Students would stay til the end of the game.

Make it fun and worth their while and just maybe they might become Tiger fans. If they are fans they might come to games after graduation.

All of this should have happened 20 years ago, but if it happens now it would payoff big time in the next 10 to 15 years. Maybe sooner!

Putting several thousand energetic 18 to 22 year olds in the middle of Liberty Stadium gets her out of the unexciting group of arenas. And builds fans for the future.

None of this is too expensive. The companies that get their products advertised now would foot the bill for the certificates. There are some fans who buy season tickets (not that many really) in that section who would have to move over 1 section but they would get a more exciting environment. The seats where the students sit now could be the walk up cheap seats. Student fans should be a priority, not an after thought! Making students more important would make it more important to students!

RE: How to make Tiger football more important to students
If the stadium isn't a reasonably walkable distance, students don't care. It took years of flirting with #1 in the country for the BB program to get any student support. It isn't because they aren't fans. Its because the logistics for off campus stadiums suck when you are a student. Heck I used to skip football games because I was afraid to give up my great parking spot by the dorm. It means alot when you lug stuff back and forth to home. And you wouldn't catch me dead riding a shuttle to a game so no surprise that they don't either.

You do not know the history of Tiger Basketbal and student supportl. As far as walking distance goes I would venture to say as many students live in walking distance to Liberty Stadium as live in walking distance to campus. And the ones who live on campus don't have to walk they can ride a shuttle bus the University already provides. Probably many would park on campus to ride the free student shuttle rather than pay to park at the stadium. Especially if the drop off location was at a spot across Hollywood near the east entrance to Liberty Stadium and there was free food and drink and maybe a band for people with a student ID.

You do not know the history of Tiger Basketball. As far as walking distance goes I would venture to say as many students live in closer walking distance to Liberty Stadium than live in walking distance to campus.

Has nothing to do with history. Raucous student crowds from before HD TV really don't apply here.

Try to start making sense. And why do some of you just automatically disagree with something before you even consider it?

Unless there are a few thousands students squatting inside the Mid-South Coliseum, you’d be wrong.

Considering most students do not live on campus, and do not live very close to campus, it is likely as many live as close to Liberty Stadium as live close to campus. And that includes all the residents of the dorms. To paraphrase the bard, there are more things under heaven and earth than are dreamt of in Browning Hall. Remember that line of Hamlet is coming from one student addressed to another.

Greeks do a reasonably good job.

The entire student section turnout has improved since Fuente's arrival, so I am sure they are doing a good job on campus garnering support.

There are 23 bowl subdivision football teams that play home games in off campus arenas. The vast majority of those are Urban Universities. Some examples: South Carolina, Baylor, UCLA, Miami, Pittsburg, and Memphis.

I don't imagine they let you take a cooler of beer (rootbeer) on the shuttle.

RE: How to make Tiger football more important to students
Do any of you see the value of having more students in the stands of Tiger football games. Or do you just see this as an insurmountable problem? And by the way most major college football programs student sections are near if not at the center of the opposing teams side of the field and they wrap around toward the end zone. Of course the student section at aTm goes from end zone to end zone on the opponents side. It is the largest student section in the nation.

In 2020, we had roughly 3000 students living in university affiliated housing. Let’s add a very conservative 1000 in non-university affiliated off-campus housing for arguments sake. That’s 4000 or 23% of undergraduates. You say more than 4000 live under a mile from the Liberty Bowl. Where do they live (combined were up to half of all undergraduates)?

This sounds good to me as long those fans who would have to change seats didn't mind.

RE: How to make Tiger football more important to students
When I went to Memphis State in 65-68 I had a date and went to pretty much every home game. My fraternity, Lamdba Chi, rented buses that came by the house and picked everyone up and drove us to the LB. Those buses were parked in the LB parking lot and if someone wanted to leave the game early, they could go to the bus and sit in it until the game was over and everyone was back on board. This was convenient due to some of us not being in proper condition to drive after the game was over. We sat as a group at the game and made plenty of noise. We looked forward to every game and having a party at the house when the buses returned us there.

Agree. The highlighted part reminds me of Duke's Camron Indoor. They give the students premium seating. It prevents selling those tickets for premium prices, but it creates instant energy. Students feel in-the-game and get loud and make a difference.
