Wahoowa84 makes some very interesting points about Georgetown hoops (and the risk it faces). As I see it, with a few more missteps and some bad luck, GU is at risk of becoming (if it hasn't already) a "rich man's DePaul." And that is not a good thing.

Well, if anything, I am impressed by the *resiliency* of Georgetown's fan base and remaining national brand prominence in hoops.

Bottom line is, we have made one Final 4, IMO the benchmark for A-level hoops relevance, in the past 36 years. We haven't made Sweet 16 in 15 years. Fifteen years!

By all rights, given those results, the hoops brand that was built by John Thompson and Patrick Ewing nearly 40 years ago (40 Years !!!) should have faded to nothing by now.

But ... it hasn't.

As for Michigan's football fan base being "at risk", that's about the silliest thing I've ever heard. Michigan has a top 10, arguably top 5, football fan base and there's zero indication IMO that this will ever change.

Georgetown hoops is hanging in there, Quo. But some "cracks in the seams" are visible. Attendance has dropped a bit over the years (though that could be rectified, perhaps, with better teams). And recruiting seemingly has been spotty under Ewing and JTIII. The program has recorded only one 20-win-plus season since 2012-13.

GU reminds me a bit of Indiana. Both programs remain relevant overall. But both have suffered somewhat long-term mediocrity.

Agree fully on Michigan.

The NewBigXII will have just a smidge fewer fans/school than the OldBigEast. It also lacks a single anchor program. In many ways the new BigXII is a reincarnation of the OldBigEast.

Meh, there are a lot more fans. Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Texas Tech ,WVU and BYU all have 55K+ butts in the seat on game day; K-State has 50K+; and TCU, Baylor and UCF will all have around 45K. Even UC and UH will get to the 40,000 number. There are no school's in professional stadiums announcing 40K+ with only ~20K butts in the seat.

It may seem that way, but UC, UCF, UH, and BYU will almost certainly generate a lot more viewership after they join the Big 12, and their fan bases could continue to expand over the next decade or two.

I guess we’ll see. Just looking at the numbers, the new schools could triple their number of fans and still not come close to making up the loss of UT and OU.

A few good B12 years and UCF might build another 10k seats.

They already have plans for an expanded stadium.... however most of the money is being spent on improved amenities.

Keep in mind that fans in the stands are a drop in the bucket - typically just 1% to 5% of the total number of fans - and is highly dependent on the size of your stadium.

A better breakdown would be an equation that combines actual stadium attendance, average ticket price, and TV ratings.

There are definitely some head-scratching outliers with this data set.

We are certainly Top 10 in basketball but way lower in football.

I think the Syracuse diaspora is much greater than a lot of the top schools fanswise. I know a lot of fans of parents who moved from from upstate NY in the Charlotte area. Ditto with the time i spend in FL.

TV ratings are easily affected by opponent, time, outlet and record of said team.

That said certain teams always grab great ratings.

Georgetown in the 80s and into the 90s was huge among unaffiliated urban fans. They had a huge bandwagon following and it was very popular clothing item to wear Georgetown.

Interestingly, Penn State has the nation's #4th largest fanbase according to this site, despite the fact that it has only been a member of a power conference since 1990.

.

Of additional interest, Miami and Syracuse have two of the largest fan bases in the ACC, even though they didn't join a power conference until 1991 and have only been in the ACC since 2004 and 2013, respectively.

.

To cap it off, Notre Dame (the nation's #2nd largest fan base) is still a football independent to this day.

.

You must be young...eastern independents were mostly considered national programs.

Syracuse football hasn’t been good in 30 years but yes the basketball support shows that the school has a rabid fan base all of upstate New York. Shame football can’t get right

Actually our dynasty of EXC to VG teams ended in 2001. Only one rated team (#15 in '18) since then.

Yes, e.g. the "bulldog tattoo". The popularity of that extended well in to the 2000s. Iverson had one of those and he was iconic in urban areas.

In the Big 12 ranking, Kansas is in the middle of the pack even though they are unarguably the worst football team in the Big 12. On the other hand, it doesn't help Duke football (2nd to last in the ACC), Indiana football (last in the Big 10), or to a lesser degree Kentucky (4th from the bottom in the SEC).
The data is based on vivid seats numbers from years ago...Syracuse has the largest CBB facility right? Duke, not so much. This is honestly one of the laziest attempts at metrics like this I've seen.

This study uses flawed 2011 data from the NYT. It was flawed when the NYT first released it and it’s flawed now. Ohio State has a lot of fans but almost 2 1/2 times more than Alabama… come on.

Just doing a cursory review it looks like he gave northern schools a bump and undervalued southern schools. Then I read his bio: He went to school at SC and Penn. Living now in NYC.

His bio reveals he’s spent not one minute in the south and his report reflects that. This young man needs to get out more.

Yep. I interacted with him on twitter about his study. He started bringing up Temple, UConn and schools like Penn and others on the east coast. I felt like I was talking with Schmolik or one of the UMass/UConn guys who brings up a "We need a Northeast Conference" every month or two.
