Thoughts:

The Titans are at the top due to two key factors: 1. It's the NFL; and 2. the Titans fan base is far more diverse (whites, blacks, Hispanics, women, liberals, conservatives, rich, poor, middle class, women, mainstream, non-mainstream, etc.) than the fan bases of any of the others on my list.

In contrast, the Preds and UT Vol football fans bases, while large and dedicated, are noticeably white, mainstream and socio-politically right leaning. So there simply are not the sheer number of "would-be fans" for those two. There is a "cap," so to speak.

Nashville SC (our MLS franchise) has developed a large and loyal following very quickly. Lots of our immigrant population, hipsters, urbanites, etc., enjoy the club — as such demographic groups tend to like "international" things (in this case, soccer).

The Sounds (Triple-A International League) draw very well and are an underrated sports entity in Nashville. But Sounds fans likely enjoy the experience of being in the ballpark as much (if not more) as being "true" Sounds fans.

Vanderbilt men's basketball still offers a solid fan base — with a combination of "old-school, conservative, well-educated and moneyed" whites who live throughout the city's affluent urban and suburban west side and a relatively large number of "others" (more fans of color and blue-collar types than you might think, nut jobs like Uncle Dazzy, etc.)

Tennessee State football remains a rather big deal in the city's well established North Nashville black community. It receives strong local media coverage.

Like Tennessee Vol football, UT men's hoops fans in Nashville seem to be significantly white and socio-politically conservative (you rarely see a black person in this city wearing orange). I would argue that if you polled 10,000 black Nashvillians who like college basketball, far more would be fans of TSU than of UT. In fact, there might be more black Memphis Tiger hoops fans in Nashville than black UT hoops fans in the city. Having taught at TSU for five years (as an adjunct) and being a member of the Nashville media for more than 30 years ... I've picked up on this demographic dynamic.

Vanderbilt football offers a respectable number of African-American fans (probably more, per capita, than lots of "state U" football programs). But our fan base overall is small. As is the fan base for VU baseball (though it is dedicated). Sports are simply not as big a deal at Vanderbilt as they are at the large, public, mainstream universities.

Belmont men's basketball is respected in this city as a "player" to an extent. The BU facility is nice and the fan base is solid in terms of numbers and spirit. The Nashville media covers BU hoops.

The most popular women's sports program for Nashvillians is almost certainly UT Lady Vol basketball. However, the Vanderbilt women and the MTSU ladies draw some interest from some in the city (including this poster).

I'm near Dunedin, but I don't think I've seen any Seminole paraphernalia in 6 years here. Hillsborough may be different. I see more Georgia Bulldogs stuff and transplant fans from the northeast. I am a UF alum and my 5yo son roots from the Seminoles, so they do have a toe-hold.

That was my experience when I lived there. The Cowboys are the 800 pound gorilla, even when they're bad. The Rangers were traditionally the Tarrant County team..Fort Worth and Arlington have supported them in bad times and in good. The Mavs and the Stars are popular when they win, but the Mavs have a bigger fan base.

Yes, UT/OU/A&M are the three most popular college teams there. There are a significant number of Oklahomans in DFW, both OU grads and non-OU grads. DFW is where the jobs are. Houston has the same dynamic with the state of Louisiana and LSU: closest metro area with a big economy.

TCU has built a strong fan base in the city of Fort Worth, especially as it built itself into a Big 12 program.

But, yes, DFW is right there with Atlanta for interest in college sports and diversity of fan bases.

College Basketball I would say Indiana and WVU are 6-7 close to Ohio State’s level.

Factoring overall With Pro Bengals 1, Bearcats 2, Reds 3, Ohio State and Kentucky toss-up for 4 and 5.

* The "average" black sports fan living in Nashville (there are many exceptions to the rule) leans toward enjoying the NFL, the NBA, Tennessee State football and basketball, and/or Memphis Tiger basketball.

* The "average" white sports fan living in Nashville (there are many exceptions to the rule) leans toward enjoying the NFL, the Preds, the Vols, auto racing and/or golf.

* The "average" Vanderbilt fan is ... well, there truly isn't an easy definition. I'm likely a good example of that.

* Hockey (both viewing and participating) is a bigger deal here than I ever would have imagined it would be 25 years ago.

* In terms of participation, some of the area's private high schools sponsor lacrosse but the sport has a long way to go here. High school girls volleyball is very popular.

* The most popular individual sports for viewing (in person or on TV) are likely golf, auto racing and (perhaps surprisingly) boxing/MMA. I'm not sure many Nashvillians like to watch tennis.

* The average Nashvillian seems to be equally a "fan of Nashville in general" as she/he is a "fan of a specific sports team." It's an interesting dynamic. Many of us exhibit an inflated sense of our city, with the "hyper proud dynamic" very evident when you talk to the locals. I'm guilty of sometimes being a Nashville homer.

My friends and I went down there for a North Dakota vs Penn State hockey game this past fall and I've gotta say... Nashville lives up to it's reputation and the sense of pride and inflated view that ya have of the city is deserved. It's not arrogance if it's true lol. And I'm not comparing it to Grand Forks - it's the best city I've ever been to, period. We all had a great time there and would love to get back some day. Would be a great location for a college hockey championship as well - UND is hosting one soon in Vegas, but I could easily see them put a bid in for Nashville during the next round of selections.

Agree 100% with this.

And to those outside the area, some might be surprised how little support SMU has, even as a FBS program with significant athletic history. Much of it is the "don't call us, we'll call you" relationship SMU has developed with the city, particularly since the 1970's. Every urban school has some sort of town-gown disconnect, but I can't think of a single FBS school where the disconnect with the city has been as visible.

Though more than a few years ago, I graduated from high school located six miles from SMU. There may have been three kids who went there from my class.

Yeah most people even in the Carolinas don’t realize how strong the Canes fan base is within 25 miles of PNC Arena now. In 4 years we went from rumors Dundon was moving the team to Houston to getting a Stadium Series game.

Problem is 90% of the fan base is within that circle. There’s a few fans in Charlotte, some in the Triad, a few in Wilmington, and that’s about it.

There is an inferiority complex toward NC stuff down here. I bet you could ask 50 random people here and maybe 10 or so would even know Raleigh has a hockey team. Among sports fans more people know, but I know folks who hate everything about the state and don’t want anything to do with it, even the Panthers.

Charleston has a lot of Capitals fans because our ECHL team (Stingrays) has been affiliated with them for years and the military. They brought the Stanley Cup here after they won a few years ago and it was like a Caps home game that night.

I wonder why that is. I generally cheer for all of the NC sports teams when I can, especially the Canes. As someone who lives within that 25 mile radius, I agree that the Canes support here is massive.

Looking at some of the posts earlier in this thread, it's pretty clear how significant Chicagoland is to Notre Dame's fan base

I am talking Grand Rapids, tho they are similar markets. The Notre Dame fans (to borrow Muskie's term) are usually the village idiots or they back ND & the Michigan Power 5 teams.

How Kalamazoo is different: Blackhawk fans are pretty nonexistent in GR, but not so in Kalamazoo. Also Grand Valley, Central, & GR's minor league teams have no to little fanbase in Kalamazoo.

I know of some WVU hoops fans in town (because of Huggins)- but I have never encountered many WVU FB fans. Then again, I’ve found different fan interests on difference sides of the metro (NKY is very heavy UK and also some Louisville, northern outlying counties stronger OSU presence).

Miami: 10-15% (vast majority of UM fans live in the three county region of South Florida, particularly in Dade County and the southern half of Broward County.

Out-of-state schools: 15-20% (a lot of transplants in the Sunshine State; Probably more B1G fans in Florida than any other state outside the conference's footprint)

Just spitballing (and it for sure fluctuates with wins and losses), but I'd say a statewide breakdown when teams are winning at about the same level might look something like:

UF: 35-40% (boost from longtime SEC membership)

FSU: 25-30% (probably about even with the Gators if the Noles hadn't wimped out and joined the ACC instead of the SEC back in the early 1990's)

Miami: 10-15% (vast majority of UM fans live in the three county region of South Florida, particularly in Dade County and the southern half of Broward County.

Other in-state schools: 8-12% (includes HBCU's at I-AA level)
