What realignment scenario could generate $2M/year per school for the CUSA?
.

Question:

As far-fetched as it may seem, is there any conceivable realignment scenario that could possibly generate a broadcasting deal worth $2M/year (or more) per school (the minimum amount that the other four G5 conferences are receiving) for the CUSA?

If so, what is it, and what would it take to make it happen?

.

I believe the CUSA could generate the kind of income that the MAC generates, but they would have to do a lot more than add some of the FCS schools that are being talked about.

Some of the players that could help the CUSA schools to generate $2 million/per school per year in broadcasting revenue:

Army (FB member)

North Dakota State (FB member)

South Dakota State (FB member)

UConn and UMass (FB member)

Basketball schools could include Chattanooga, Furman, Wofford, Belmont, Abilene Christian, Murray State, and a host of others.

Oakland? Even ACU is a flash in the pan.

What's your opinion about the CUSA, more broadly? Is there anything they can do to earn $2M per school per year?

Nothing, CUSA should end up with a deal equal to MAC and SBC money doing very little. The group of schools are just as attractive.

I wouldn't expect to see it happening on its own, and I see it as being less (not more) likely to happen if the CUSA adds any of the FCS schools that have been discussed other than North or South Dakota State.

NDSU and SDSU are the obvious best pieces still left on the board. The issue being of course their being in the Dakotas.

Yeah.

More of this.

Did y'all know NDSU averages like 33 million viewers for every televised game? Networks would be lining up to pay us.

If only there was a forum to discuss CUSA realignment specifically.

I would like to see proof that MAC and SB receive 2 million per school. I haven't kept up with the media deals.

I would like for CUSA to add GCU.

I doubt anyone will provide a reputable source. Thst may be total payouts (media, cfb payout, conference distribution, etc) but until proven, it's highly doubtful that's strictly a media payout dollar figure.

The CUSA 9 need to prove their value on the field and court. Finishing ahead of the MAC and SBC to earn more cfp money would be nice but I expect that to take a couple of years. Our first media contract will not be worth a lot but even so the conference will not make much less than the MAC or the SBC because their claims are just that, claims.

CUSA can add more income thru continued success in the big dance as well.

I haven't seen a reputable source mention anything about a 2 million dollar contract for the SBC, outside of a beat writer who was speculating on the contract in an unofficial capacity. The contracts were renegotiated in 2021 resulting in a 50% increase in ESPN broadcasts during the season (ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU), up from 15 to 23 games. The expanded media deal will go into effect in 2023. No official dollar amount has been released.

That’s really all it comes down to. Some schools have huge and active fan bases, some have fallen from where they have been in the past, others are still building theirs up. But viewership/attendance will bring in bigger media deals. The way to do that is by putting out a quality product.

With the addition of another CUSA member to the El Paso media market, I expect the Miners and Aggies to both benefit. And I wouldn’t be surprised if more eyes are watching CUSA there than anywhere else. Hopefully that success will be something a media deal sees as an indicator for other metro areas and pays up.

This, 1000%, full stop.

If we want more money, we need to prove we're worth it. It's all on us.

I doubt a modicum of success will change the media payout much at all. Media deals are based on potential and or real viewership to advertise to. Winning will really only help if it’s to the extent that a large number of casual viewers begin watching. Also seeing that ndsu and SDSU are in a very sparsely populated states I doubt their viewership increases much or that their value is significantly higher than a lesser team located in a better market.

Apparently, you're not aware of the fact that North Dakota State has had an average viewership of well over 1 million in their most widely-viewed games in each of the past ten years.

Part of this may come down to a question of 'how much does CBS Sports Network need us?' I mean, they really have limited college football options. They carry Mountain West, but MWC primary games are most often on FS1. They carry MAC, but during November most of their games are on weeknights so no content that month.

Yes they carry Army, but is that UConn deal working out very well? What benefit do you get from being the flagship outlet carrying one of the five worst teams in FBS? From a football perspective, I think CBSSN not only needs C-USA games to be available, but also having a stronger C-USA is in their best interests.

In the next round of media deals ESPN might bid, but let's face it, they don't really need more FBS content unless they're ultimate goal is to remove all/most of CBSSN's options.
