First Football Mag Out - Athlon
Looked through Athlon's 2022 season Football Review today and the Tigers ain't getting much respect. Predicted 7-5 overall and middle of the pack in the conference - and a Bowl against somebody called Georgia State.

Ryan might need to step up the pace a bit or his seat might begin to get a little warmer.

I'd take 7-5. Georgia State has been on our schedule the last couple of years

Not only did we dropped USM to add head to head with Georgia St.

We gave them the first home game.

They didn't even start their program till 2010.

Playing Georgia State is a a lot smarter than playing uSM.

Georgia State a program on the rise, uSM is still falling

I will say as someone who loves watching baseball, I am jealous of USM’s program. Nice facility, good program, hosting a regional as a top 16 seed and they don’t use the excuse that Memphis does that “we are surrounded by SEC schools”. They’re in a state with 2 SEC powerhouses and still manage to compete nationally. Also jealous of ECU in that regard too.

There was a time when we measured the strength of our team by how well we played against Southern.

Thankfully that's in the past.

The expectation here has to be that if you don't win 8 games then you're on the hot seat. That's the new standard for this football program. Mike Norvell never won less than 8 games.

They care about Baseball in Hattiesburg like we care about Basketball in Memphis. I lived there 2 years (longest 5 years of my life), and it's baseball and football nothing else. High School baseball, Junior College baseball, College baseball, it all matters and they all talk about it.

Add in the fact that it's really the only thing that USM is any good at and you can see why it gets the support of everyone. USM football may come back to some form of respectability within the Sun Belt, but I think the days of the USM powerhouse program of the 80s & 90s are gone. The Power Conferences are too far ahead and USM didn't take the right steps to try and keep up.

I suppose the thing that puzzled me the most about Athlon was their disrespect for Seth. They had him ranked as the 5th best QB in the conference. This for a guy that as true freshman put up amazing numbers and was voted by the Football Writers Association as Freshman All-American. I would expect that there would be a couple of upper classmen AAC QBs rated higher than Seth but I just doubt that there are 4 QBs in the conference better than he is. Just my humbler opinion.

This seems a bit odd for a school that labeled themselves NITchampionshipburg.

Most of them ‘Sip schools seem to be all about some baseball. Went tailgating at miss stat once for a regular conference baseball game and I was impressed.

The running bearsharkrebels have stepped up their game in recent years too

He is not being judged be just true freshman. He is being judged be the entire portfolio of QBs in the conference.

I really don't remember anything other that the number 4 QB was a Soph - I was to cheap to buy the thing.

Me too. I stopped buying Athlons and Lindys years ago.

Phil Steele's mag is all you need. There's a reason his is later to hit shelves. He's extremely thorough and does the necessary research. IMO

Georgia State was 8-5 last winning a bowl game. They were also one of two teams to beat Coastal Carolina last year. USM was 1-9 before they won their last two games to finish 3-9.

The way people mythologize Southern Miss on here is unreal.

Literally nobody cares about them.
