Prior to 1951, Colgate had a 31-16-5 record against Syracuse. SU then won 10 games in a row including some real beatdowns (71-0, 41-0, 61-7, 51-8, etc.) They've played only five times since.

RE: Rivalries that completely flipped around
UCF vs South Florida in the War on I-4: South Florida was in the Big East conference and had an advantage over UCF with their BCS tag. Eventually UCF built facilities and joined the same conference which leveled the playing field for awhile. Then UCF became a Top G5 team after claiming a National Championship and has pulled away in the series since the 2017 team.

http://www.winsipedia.com/south-florida/vs/ucf

Start of the Rivalry: South Florida sweeps series 4-0
2005 South Florida Win 31-14
2006 South Florida Win 24-17
2007 South Florida Win 64-12 (Largest Margin of Victory for South Florida, Later climbed to #2 in the BCS rankings in week 8)
2008 South Florida Win 31-24
(Intermission because South Florida didn't want to continue series)

UCF Joins the AAC: UCF and South Florida tied 2-2
2013 UCF Win 23-20
2014 UCF Win 16-0
2015 South Florida Win 44-3
2016 South Florida Win 48-31

More Recently: UCF 5-0 Win Streak
2017 UCF Win 49-42 (UCF's National Title Claim Year)
2018 UCF Win 38-10 (Largest Margin of Victory for UCF)
2019 UCF Win 34-7
2020 UCF Win 58-46
2021 UCF Win 17-13

2022 is likely the last game of the series for awhile. South Florida's OOC schedule is full for awhile.

Fun Fact:
2008 South Florida brought a shovel to dig out the endzone of UCF's new Stadium.

You can see a good share of weird stuff from the northeastern schools up until the D1A/1AA split. Some interesting ongoing series and results between current CAAF or Patriot members versus current ACC, AAC, or independents. Colgate really hung on in there.

UGA vs Tennessee might also qualify for this one. 26-23-2 overall with UGA in the lead.
From 1899 to 1999 there were 28 games played with a 10 Georgia wins, 17 for Tennessee including 9 in a row from 1989 through 1999. Since 1999 UGA has 16 wins and 6 wins for Tennessee.

Closer to home, Georgetown-Fordham:

Through 1975, 19-12-3... competitive.
Since 1975: 4-27-0...not competitive.

It's been an annual rivalry from 1946. From 1948-58, they played twice a year.

12-10 Cincinnati from 1928-1957
33-8 Cincinnati from 1958-1996
18-8 Xavier from 1996-today

The two schools also played annually in football from 1946-1973 (when Xavier dropped their team). All of the football games were played in UC's Nippert Stadium.

Let’s not forget Cincinnati v Miami (OH) and the battle for the victory bell

Series is currently tied at 49-49-7. Cincy has won the last 15 games, it’s at a point it doesn’t even feel like a rivalry anymore.

It’s not, it’s a series (actually 59-59-7). The two schools have been operating on a different plane for sometime now. I have done a deeper dive on this, many attribute the divergence to UC going to the Big East in 2005. That is certainly a factor, but in addition, since 1986 UC is 25-9-1 in that series. That’s quite telling since UC football was at its lowest in the 80s and early/mid 90s.

A lot of older Miami fans view it still from the lens of the bygone days, but ask any of their fans under 30 if it is a rivalry they’ll be honest.

It’s hard to believe that there was once a time when schools like Ohio Wesleyan, Case, Oberlin, Kenyon, and Western Reserve would beat Ohio St.

Yeah but that was the 19th century-1930s. It was a different football world. OSU had not elevated itself yet, and those schools had de-emphasized playing football at the highest level. Case was at one time a strong program. Had they had the foresight or desire, being in the Cleveland metro area, they could easily be on par with someone like Duke, Northwestern, Vandy, etc athletically.

I wonder if the Big Ten conference fathers ever gave any thought to a 2nd Ohio school.

A Case or even a Cincinnati would have been interesting. something tells me that Case would make the same decision that Chicago did. I wonder why Northwestern never did.

Let’s say the both Chicago schools did drop out in the 40s. Who comes in along with Mich St? Pitt?

Here's what a "good rivalry" looks like since 1900. However, for obvious reasons, it is not played frequently anymore.

South Carolina vs North Carolina State

It might be 25-9-1 UC since 1986, but if you look at the pre-Big East record starting 1986 it was a pretty even 10-8-1. Keep in mind that the late 80s/early 90s were by far Miami's lousiest stretch in our program's history until 2006-15.

I'd categorize the series as a quasi-rivalry at this point. If you ask the average UC football fan I'm guessing it's not an important game, but they know Miami and they feel stronger about playing us than if you had a buy game against another MAC or G5 school. Most Miami fans are realistic and acknowledge it's not competitive at this point but still care about it, and hold out hope that UC comes off its high and we improve so we can turn things around (even if unlikely).

I'm of the opinion that while UC's Big East move and drastic improvement since then is a major factor in where we are today, ultimately Miami blew it. Even as UC has become much better on the field since Brian Kelly, it still would've been competitive if since 2006 we were still a winning program with a few great seasons like we've been through most of our program's history. We were dreadful in the mid-2010s yet almost stole a few games; we didn't, but in a universe where our admin didn't crap the bed the past fifteen years probably would've looked something like 5-10 and more importance instead of 0-15 and mostly irrelevant. Sadly that's not reality, and I think with UC's move to the Big 12 (and likely about to take a series lead) I think future games might be scrapped altogether unless we're willing to no longer play in Oxford (which is not on the table).
