Not to mention they could include facilities to house the marching band equipment and some practice facilities.

An ampitheather stage on one end looking out over a mall or tiered area where the various arts could stage outdoor performances for students during the semesters and for fans on game days.

It could be SO MUCH MORE than a stadium if they had any imagination and backbone.

And an extra $600 million lying around, based on all these upgrades you are proposing...
If you were offering additional facilities you might attract new sources of funding that would never be interested or available for just a stadium.

Like Liberty Park?

No. I mean some of the big arts supporters might pony up if there were some facilities in there for the drama and music departments. I'm talking doable stuff here. A bigger plan would be to put a small particle accelerator under the stadium or something like that.

Other legitimate educational things that could be done :
- Video/audio production and technical training for large stadium venues.
- Cell phone and wi-fi coverage for large venues
- Other infrastructure

If you had a facility on campus, the opportunity exists to partner with companies in these businesses to use the stadium as a laboratory. This type of arrangement could allow us to get equipment for no/reduced cost and allow us to develop a unique career development area for our students and faculty.

So much potential just pissed away by a complete lack of vision and imagination. Instead of breaking new ground in education we are rebuilding a 60 year old stadium on the cheap. The saddest thing about it is our students, faculty, and school will get zero educational benefit from the project. The players and fans will have a nicer place, but we as an educational institution have completely missed an incredible opportunity.

Big thinking on your part Claw! But that last one would be a real stretch. Having dabbled in that arena a little during my career, that beneath a stadium might be a bridge too far as far as competing environments are concerned. But the biggest reason not to put anything under the stadium would be the delay it would bring to getting the stadium up and operating in the first place. You wouldn't want to delay that, would you?

I wouldn't care if it took 20 years to build if it was on campus.

RE: Mayor Strickland interview 98.9
has anyone considered a renovated Liberty Bowl to be equivalent to The Pryamid?

Remember no one thought they could get the money and they did.

The Pyramid was nice enough to get the Griz to Memphis but they needed a better arena than the Pyramid going foward.

So they built FedEx Forum.

The analogy is that the renovated Liberty Bowl gets us in the Big XII and once we start receiving P5 money we might be able to afford to do something on campus that does not rely so heavily on donors.

No one coming up with this stuff is actually dealing with reality.

The university actually has to take into account classroom/office spaces in addition to athletics. All of that is already at a premium campus-wide.

#1: The track & "4 ancient dorms" that you so easily want to tear down are in active use - ROTC, office space, classrooms, etc., are all housed in those buildings, and Memorial Field and the track next to it is used almost daily during the semester.

You can't remove those without having a plan for more buildings and another track/field area to replace them. Guess what that requires? More $$$$$$$. After years of trying, UofM finally got the state funds to move forward with ONE STEM building. You actually think they can snap their fingers & get the funds to replace 4 other buildings?

#2: Build "several parking garages" on Zach Curlin....so let's see...where will that go since you cannot build on the east side of ZC due to a water treatment plant, and you already have plans for a new STEM building coming on the opposite side of the library? If the OCS is in the footprint of the older dorm buildings & track area, you're out of room for any of that, because you're not going to tear down the newly renovated Fieldhouse, nor the Theater next to it, nor the UC, or the parking garage tied to all 3 of those. You're also not demolishing Campus School or the Education building that it's connected to.

#3: Amphitheater/music storage facilities: A brand new amphitheater area was already built leading from the walking bridge across Southern for those purposes. Likewise, a brand new music performing arts center is opening in a couple of months on Central. The music department is not paying one more dime for anything on their end to tie in with a stadium - they are already stretched thin as it is with the new PAC.

#4: THE. MONEY. IS. NOT. THERE. Even using UofM owned land, $400M ain't coming to build it.

Wasn’t a new arena a requirement to get the Grizzlies here?

The only complete lack of vision and imagination here is you refusing to understand the simple reality, that nobody wanted to, and/or could afford to pay for it. I have the vision and imagination to see how much benefit I would get from buying a 200FT yacht.

Do you (finally) see what the deal is?

I don't see that at all. I see some academics that don't want a football stadium on their campus and some city leaders willing to take their money and make their dreams come true. That is much closer the truth.

Stammers and I don't often see eye to eye, but he's right. Blaming the decision to renovate the LB vs. building an OCS on a "lack of vision and imagination" demonstrates your lack of understanding of the reality of what the university administration is facing.

U of M simply can't get enough donations or secure enough private funding to pursue the OCS and manage all the challenges that would come along with it. If you think adding a music or educational element would solve for that, then I'd love for you to chime in on achieving world peace and ending world hunger. I think you know something others do not.

My "lack of vision and imagination" applies to the last 20 years when they KNEW this day was coming, DID have the time to develop a solution, and didn't do a damn thing on-campus or off-campus.

Back to the OP...Strickland is dropping major hints at a B12 invitation coming by 2025.
Later today I plan to listen to the Strickland & Hardgrave joint interview with Jeff Brightwell. Also will listen to Veatch 2 interviews with Calkins and with GP.

Later today I plan to listen to the Strickland & Hardgrave joint interview with Jeff Brightwell. Also will listen to Veatch 2 interviews with Calkins and with GP.

That would be awesome news.

I know nothing about Strickland so you guys will have to judge his intentions and veracity for me.

Can you elaborate or at least keep those of us who can't listen - posted? I will add that the Boise State AD had an interesting tweet about a week ago based on the Memphis Liberty Bowl news:)

I haven't listened to the interviews yet. Got a long drive this evening and plan to do so then.
The way I'm reading the quotes about "the timing being very important" and "being ready by 2025" sounds a lot to me like hints at the B12 and their 2025 reorganization timeline.
