I’m re-reading Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged” and the competent are somehow obligated to support the incompetent because of some nebulous idea of ‘social responsibility ‘. College football isn’t operating under this myth anymore but college basketball is. The NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament is the greatest event where we can see a Cinderella make a run like St. Peter’s this year and the Butler’s, Loyola’s and George Mason’s have done so in the past. But there are entire BB conferences that are D-1 in name only because of the guaranteed sweet, sweet NCAA cash.

When did Rutgers become the "competent" exactly?

Mike speaks for himself and is quite competent.

(05-12-2022 08:16 PM)Hokie Mark Wrote:  Honestly, I think it all boils down to how quickly ESPN wants to get to the "end game" - which may be decided by the Big Ten negotiations.

If the goal is to break away 100% from the rest of Div-I asap, they'd want to split up the ACC and add the choicest pieces to the SEC. This becomes more likely if ESPN gets a big chunk of the Big Ten contract, but could be triggered by other factors as well.

OTOH, if ESPN gets few (or no) B1G games and believes that "collegiate" model will be around for another decade, they may want to only move the pieces that the Big Ten would want (e.g. UVA, UNC, Duke, and Kansas) to the SEC; they'd probably still want to combine the best (all?) of the remaining ACC and Big XII into a single conference, paying more than either the ACC or Big XII now, though not as much as the SEC. This gives ESPN more inventory, but not quite as valuable and at a lower price.

But what do I know?

The more likely scenario is that all parties comply with existing agreements. It’s easy to talk about breaking contracts, reality is more complex. Even though ACC football has been relatively weak the past three years, all the macro changes with collegiate athletics are still breaking in ESPN’s direction. ESPN doesn’t have to take risks by encouraging realignment.

The Big 12 would definitely need to pare down the ACC schools they'd take.

All this talk about these huge leagues would be Hell for the metrics - as each league would have a much bigger "bottom."

The metric I think that matters to these schools and conferences is "money". I think they could care less whether adding two more teams or ten more teams means they move behind conference X or Y or both in the KenPom or NET five-year moving average basketball conference rankings, or whatever.

Winning is tremendous fun for fans - I am a LA Rams fan and have bought about six Super Bowl champ T-shirts and hoodies the past two months - but to the institution, it is important only to the extent it brings in more money.

Every institution in America that invests in D1 athletics would rather be Rutgers, winning nothing but in line to cash those enormous B1G checks, than say Baylor, with recent basketball national title and Fiesta Bowl wins, but now in a quasi-power-tweener conference because the breadwinners are leaving.

You will find if you receive a copy of Jean Jaques Rousseau's, "The Social Contract" that it contains very little which Ayn Rand would disagree with as it is about why good government ensures social liberties (as in freedom) and that the responsibility of citizens would be to serve in it and defend it. The book served as the foundation for much of what our founding fathers believed and thematically adopted in our Constitution. It was published in 1762 and was once required reading in schools. You know in the days when young people never texted TLDR and public schools would have never accepted a book report on known felons of pop culture!

How much longer does Notre Dame stay?

The ACC has used the CFP Expansion as a political ploy to get them to join. The end result was a disaster. That can't be a healthy relationship.

14 years give or take. Then they can become conference mates with Butler.

If the breakaway happens I expect that ND would have to join a conference. The number of teams in the so called super league (NFL lite) or the regular league would be much smaller than now that it won’t be difficult for any team to schedule enough teams as an independent. This is assuming two leagues don’t play each other of course. The super league will also likely use a very strict scheduling like the NFL.

As soon as the ACC implodes.

Then they will become members of the $100 million a year club with Ohio State and North Carolina, not Butler.

What is obvious is that NOTHING is going to happen until a critical mass void the GOR or someone applies for membership to another conference. Conference leadership want to keep their jobs. They aren't going to dissolve anything. No one is going to invite an ACC school with an intact GOR with 14 years remaining. Sitting around complaining won't achieve much. The biggest complainers need to step up and organize that airport meeting or announce intentions to leave the conference. The alternative is just to remain whiny witches.

I believe we were privy to the first few airport meeting bat signals.

Is it 3-4 so far? Plus the SEC comments. You can count on the weakest 3 or 4 to agree sell their votes when needed, so just a few more AD public comments to go before everyone knows the math works.

I won't disagree with you on that! I would certainly act if I had the power to do so, or wield my influence to push for action if I had any pull in Tallahassee. Unfortunately neither of those are the case for me, and Pete may well be in the same boat vis a vis Coral Gables. I do like your ideas on what could be done NOW, and I can only hope that such things are being organized or at least considered behind the scenes. At a minimum I'd love to see FSU announce that while they will fulfill their contract obligations unless and until they expire or are abrogated, under no circumstances will FSU sign any further ACC GoR extensions and will depart the ACC on or before July 1, 2036. That might get the ball rolling and perhaps get others interested in having an airport meeting.

Sorry, would've responded faster, but had to go find a dictionary to look up what "abrogated" means.

But, yeah, agree with what our resident Seminole says and let's hope John Swofford's beloved GoR is put out to pasture soon.
