I was there mid- to late 90s and it was probably a transitional time for bars and drinking in DeKalb.

The afortmentioned Jungle was on it's last legs while I was there and I think close before I graduated.

The two main college/close to campus staples were Molly's and Amnesia. Amnesia was a dance club in the building that is now Molly's. Molly's was where the CVS is located on the corner of Annie Glidden and Lincoln Hwy. There was a strip mall that was torn down that housed Molly's, The Bottle Store (a liquor store that was attached to Molly's and actually had a door that led between the two, and a pizza place for a while (probably Pizza Pros or something like that).

Then there was a downtown contingency where, in my time at NIU, I saw McCabe's die....get resurrected...and then die again. It was a dance club on the weekends and on a particular night of the week (I wanna say Wednesdays) and probably just a regular bar the rest of the time.

There was also Otto's which is, to this day, one of the best small live music/dive bar combo establishments I've ever been to. So many great memories in that place.

Then there was the "townie" selection of Andy's, Lord Stanley's and the Annex (I think I'm remembering that one correctly).

There was also Eduardo's which was a Mexican restaurant but was a great place for Monday Night Football as they ran margarita specials and you could sit and eat chips and salsa that whole night.

Later on, a place in the north section of Greek Row opened called Fat Boys. It was short lived but, I think, was supposed to be a sports bar but was also trying to capture up the Greek crowd after The Jungle shuttered it's doors. It was too small and they tried to do live music but it just never took off.

Another place that opened while I was there was Starbusters (on Pappas Drive) and that was an interestering place. It started as just a bar with pretty good food (it was a nice enough place to take your folks for dinner when they were in town). They started having live music and then expanded into the space next to them and really steered hard into being a live music venue. I mean...when Mike and Joe flip from playing at Otto's to playing at Starbusters on the regular, you're going to be packing them in.

Other than that, I'm sure I'm missing something.

Oh yeah...there was a short lived place on Lincoln Hwy called Arcade Dreams. I think they were trying to be a Dave n Busters before that concept really took off. They'd also have live music and karaoke some nights. They'd get crowds for big events but not much else. And I think I recall their food was barely mediocre.

Finally, there was, which was at the time the official NIU sports bar. I 100% cannot remember the name. It was real close to the stadium. It was a cool, laid back kind of place with old and dusty Huskie memorabilia hanging on the walls. It was the first bar in DeKalb I ever drank in. I was under age...didn't have a fake ID...and they didn't check. And it's been all downhill from there.

And if anyone recalls, there was a tiny little bar out around Courtland that had awesome burgers. My roommate was an athletic trainer and was working with Kaneland HS at the time so we'd meet up with all the trainers at this place after Friday night football games. I'm not sure I ever knew the name of the place (it was probably something like Courtland Tavern or something). Although, I do know that it is closed and has been for a long time.

Shortly after Amnesia opened there was the most epic free for all brawl in the parking lot. Couldn’t even count all the fights but you had to keepYour head on a swivel or you’d end up in one too.

Am-Ex was a great little towny bar if anyone remembers that place.

Since we're tripping down memory lane I'll share mine. I was in school in the late 70's thru '81 as my handle indicates. The drinking age was still 19 when I arrived, so the bar scene was epic. Everything then was downtown except for the Red Lion, which I guess later became the Jungle. The Red Lion was a great live music venue, as noted above. Fav acts included Freewheelin', Eargazm, Mahogany Rush and others I can't remember now. We saw live music every weekend, there and elsewhere. What a lucky time to be there. Lots of great cover bands.

Downtown DeKalb was alive then and crawling with students. There was the precurser to Otto's, whose name escapes me, which was mostly a disco bar. The Shamrock, which became Lord Stanley's, was a great saloon, as was TK's next door. Lord Stanley's hasn't changed at all from the Shamrock days except for new TV's. Farther down was Andy's, which was mostly a townie bar but still fun for students, then McCabe's. In addition to live music, McCabe's had a Wednesday happy hour called Growler Night. You bought a metal bucket which you could bring back and get filled with beer, probably Old Milwaukee, which you proceeded to spill everywhere. You were always sloshing around in beer by the end, it was all over the floor and on every surface.

Across the tracks, where the McDonald's is now, was an old triangular shaped bar called the Candlelight. Candles on every table, peanut shells all over the floor. It was run by some old Greek guy who didn't let you walk around, you had to sit at your table. Still fun though, you ended up talking to the folks at the tables next to you.

After the bars, everyone stumbled back toward campus (it was walkable!) and made a pit stop at Tom & Jerry's next to the lagoon. I think it was one building over back then, but in the same area. Also, when I was there you could still have parties on your dorm floor. We would invite other floors and have a few hundred kids. I was in the late Douglas Hall. You weren't supposed to have kegs but we sneaked those in too. Great times. In some ways it was the golden age. Old folks always say that, but there was basically no TV or radio, and of course no internet, so you socialized instead.

One more memory. They used to show movies in the student union on Sunday nights for $.75. They showed good movies and got big crowds. Also, they used to have the Erotic Film Festival every spring, where they showed X-rated movies like Deep Throat at the union. It's amazing how times have changed.

The erotic film festival was unbelievably fantastic. I enjoyed Deep Throat and other memorable films. I tried to get the Grotto to sponsor my hot dog stand selling footlongs, but they preferred concentrating on their in-store paraphernalia. I also tried to open a satellite Grotto souvenir stand outside the erotic film festival, but the university would not approve it. I even offered the lady in charge a few of the “souvenirs”, but she wouldn’t bite. Even still, those were great times!

oh man, I totally memory holed this. I just did a little deep dive and found that the murderer only served 1-1.5 years in jail. It was premeditated, with what the girlfriend admitted. I also found that couple on Facebook, they're married with children. What an injustice.

-Lukulos was next to Jungle. Was always big decision at 1:30am between there and Burrittoville

-Otto's basement for darts (if no one was on the make out couch) and $2.50 giant Ottobrau drafts, aka whatever was old and they needed to sell.

-Amex forpool/darts $2.85 pitchers on Wed or Thursday, I think 3 shots of Sambucca for $2 on Wednesdays. Went there a lot on weekends along with old Molly's, Amnesia (now Molly's) on occasion (had 25 cent beers for a time) and Paradise Club.

-Aforementioned Andy's for nickel beer night, Thursday I think.

-Paradise Club in old Days Inn now Red Roof. Had a small dance floor. It was more upperclassmen looking for something between pickup places and dingy bars.

-When I was in dorms late 80's there was a dance club/juice bar called Raspberry's , was video place by stadium on Lincoln. Didn't last long. I will say it was a place for girls who could not get into bars. Albeit I think everyone there was already drunk.

Didn't the Paradise Club also have stand-up comedy some nights? I never went but I feel like I recall seeing a sign.

-Amex forpool/darts $2.85 pitchers on Wed or Thursday, I think 3 shots of Sambucca for $2 on Wednesdays. Went there a lot on weekends along with old Molly's, Amnesia (now Molly's) on occasion (had 25 cent beers for a time) and Paradise Club.

-Aforementioned Andy's for nickel beer night, Thursday I think.

-Paradise Club in old Days Inn now Red Roof. Had a small dance floor. It was more upperclassmen looking for something between pickup places and dingy bars.

-When I was in dorms late 80's there was a dance club/juice bar called Raspberry's , was video place by stadium on Lincoln. Didn't last long. I will say it was a place for girls who could not get into bars. Albeit I think everyone there was already drunk.

Didn't the Paradise Club also have stand-up comedy some nights? I never went but I feel like I recall seeing a sign.

During my time at NIU, I loved doing my stand-up comedy routine in DeKalb gynecologist offices.. I always got a standing ovulation.

It is sad how many offerings there were around campus for night life and now there are basically two.

There is a "for sale" in front of Tom and Jerrys on Lincoln. Are they going out of business??

I remember seeing Cheap Trick at the Red Lion. They were just a local Rockford band at the time. And the drinking age was 19 for beer and wine in Dekalb under what was then "local rule", one of the main reasons to go to NIU.

They are done. The equipment was been advertised separately for sale.

The one in Sycamore is still open and doing well.

Tom and Jerrys used to be a Dairy Queen in the 80s as I recall. Cant believe they went under............

Taki's, in the old PJ's Red Hots location, is on the come....
