Yes D-1. ASUN conference. Liberty, N Alabama, Stetson, Lipscomb, N Florida, are a few other members.

FGCU is in Ft Meyers. Over 15,000 students. Pat Chambers is the new Head Coach.

Good move. Probably at a place more his speed where he might get 15+ mpg by his junior year.

And then he went to Memphis. Was evaluated by the staff as having "a long ways to go" and "it’s just a longer learning curve for him."

He was subsequently redshirted after his appearance in the 2nd exhibition game included coming in at the same time as Glennon and Tadarius with under 5 minutes to go.

He obviously saw his path to playing any real time wasn't here.

So he transferred and the above schools all breathed a sigh of relief and...yada yada...he's going to play at FGCU.

And let's get something straight...bigs get all the offers. Even future bums. That's the beauty of taking a flyer on a big...he might work out.

Nick Marshall was offered by UF, Memphis, Bama, UTk, Georgia, IU, KSU.

Stan Simpson played at Illinois and was offered by other big named schools.

Crazy that you really want to die on the Sam Onu hill of awesomeness considering dude isn't even here.

If you're good enough, you're good enough.

Clearly he wasn't. As evidence by actual coach's evaluation quotes he wasn't ready for basketball at this level.

And that wasn't really a shock. He played low level hs basketball for a so-so team and didn't play high school ball his senior year.

It would logically follow his skill level wasn't going to match his "upside." That's par for the course for 7 footers especially African-born guys. They generally start basketball really late and schools hope their skill can catch up to their size.

Marshall played 8.3 minutes per game, and played 10 minutes or more in 14 games. Not quite 6 minutes per game in a few games here and there. Not quite mop up minutes.

Quote:Clearly he wasn't. As evidence by actual coach's evaluation quotes he wasn't ready for basketball at this level.

The evaluation was AFTER we signed Duren. Before Duren, signing Sam was looked at as a great get by everyone. He had a lot of great offers from great schools. Without Duren, it is only him and Dandridge, and Dandridge had major knee problems.

Dandridge played 17 total minutes in the first 3 games. Williams played 15 and 12 minutes in games 2 and 3 WITH Duren protecting him. Williams missed many games with a bad back, fouled out in 12 minutes in one game and had 8 games with 4 or 5 fouls, was in constant foul trouble the entire season, and again that is WITH Duren protecting him.

With Duren, OF COURSE Sam becomes a project. Without Duren it is him and Dandridge and Sam is getting at least 8-12 minutes.

How thick can you be? 04-drinky

RE: Sam Onu....BOH
It’s getting to the point where there is no need to even recruit high schools anymore unless it’s a Duren or Bates type and even then you might get burned. I think Penny has learned this lesson and is why we have no freshmen coming in for next season. What’s the point on trying to develop an Onu or a Camden ? And I have the feeling that both will transfer again before they complete their eligibility. Gary Parrish got what he wanted the inmates are now running the asylum.

Sorry, if I keep piling on...

I mean, your not really piling on, you conveniently leave a lot of stuff out of that thread...most notably that thread was from 5/2015 when AUSTIN NICHOLS was still expected to play in the fall.

So, basically I noted that Nick wouldn't get minutes at the detriment to Shaq, Austin, Dedric, and KJ--which isn't really crazy.

I thought with those four on the roster and playing, that would leave scraps to Nick at the tune of about 6 minutes a game.

Well, then Austin doesn't show up for the fall--Memphis loses a 25-30 mpg guy down low. THEN, KJ is redshirted after 10 games (after averaging 20 mpg in those 1st 10 games) basically only leaving Shaq and Austin as 4/5 with Burrell in the mix, too.

So, even after Memphis lost the expected 25 mpg from Austin and actual 20 mpg from KJ, Nick only played 120 seconds a game more than I anticipated he would play WITH both Austin and KJ.

Hell, looking at it now, I would bet that Josh would have redshirted Nick (as I posited) since even without 35-40 minutes of expected playing time from Austin and KJ only resulted in Nick getting 8 mpg.

Thanks for playing! Lols.
