AD for a Day
In an effort to generate discussion on this board, here’s a question for my fellow Golden Eagles. Got the idea from the Buzzardry podcast this week (I believe).

The question posed there was “You’re the AD for a day. Someone gives you $50 million that you can apply to give the most benefit to one sport and only one sport on campus. What do you do?” I’ll pose it slightly differently.

You’re the AD for a day. A donor writes the athletic program a check for $100 million for you to apply as you see fit. Whatever you decide will be put into action. Where do you direct the money?

I’ll start. I’m going to start by redoing all of Reed Green. Whether that’s renovating or tearing it down and building better, I’m bringing Southern Miss basketball into the 2020s. Then, I’m having the university as a whole buy the apartments and land by the Pete. We’ve been limited on how we can renovate there due to those apartments, and it would be awesome to move the cages back there to expand seating down the left field line.

What would you change or add?

I think paying off the South end of the Rock would be high on my list. That debt is a drag on all programs. I would also go with an indoor practice facility for football. RGC would be lower on my list because it’s upgrades are being subsidized by the city tax.

How much do we still owe on the end zone addition?

I would build an IPF for football. I would replace the current turf in the football stadium. Then I would buy out Ladner and update Reed Green.

Invest in everything football. Basketball can wait. 80 uniform combos if that brings recruits. IPF. Indoor pool. Smoothie bar. All the bells and whistles.

Football IPF. Gut RGC. Invest in a legitimate fundraising operation so it’s not the last $100 million I get to spend.

Also, offer Will Hall a $1,000 bonus for every game he puts the eagle head on the helmets instead of the wordmark.

RE: AD for a Day
AD for a day and I get $100 million. Well honestly that's not enough time to start getting anything going, 03-lmfao

First I walk The Rock (understand it's been a few years since I've been there) and see if there are small projects to work on (restrooms tick out in my mind).

Talk to Adidas and let them know we ain't about them yeller unis and see if we can do a combo with black on black, black on yellow, yellow on black, and even white on black. Maybe see if we can get a couple of throwbacks going.

Work on getting an IPF going.

If there's any money not tied up, see if there's any debt I can start paying off.

RE: AD for a Day
The Rock needs a LOT of TLC for sure. there are all sorts of things to do. Truthfully though, tear it down, make an indoor facility on that space and go build a new stadium somewhere. Bowl style seating like FSU or Michigan.

RGC is a dump. I haven't been in there in 20 years, but it was a dump then. USM needs to start taking round ball a little more serious.

PTP.... baseball is no doubt our 2nd sport, and 3rd is WAY down on the list (looking at you hoops). Right field roost is an incredible thing, but the whole facility needs to be expanded and bigger. With the crowds that come to PTP, we need to expand it.

I saw something a while back but I don’t remember the $. It was a big number.

What's wrong with The Rock? I'm sure it could use some upgrades but for the most part I think it's ok, definitely not a demo candidate.
There's a lot of other things I would rather spend money on than a stadium we can't sell out.

Concession stands and bathrooms are in rough shape. Especially the upper deck.

There is not much to the Concession stands. It is just a caged area with counter and food prep area that includes plumbing. No real kitchen areas. Not sure there is much to upgrade there.

True, they're not great but I guess they don't bother me, I'm spending a minimal amount of time there anyway.

Point is, what are you doing with the $99 million you have left over after fixing those up?

Pete Taylor Park expansion and rennovation - $15M
MM Roberts Stadium upgrades (bathrooms, concessions, scoreboard, enclose the south Endzone, etc) - $18M
New Golf facility at HCC - $1.5M
Indoor practice facility, weight rooms, nutrition facility (cafeteria), and recovery rooms - $10M
Cross Country course out at Lake Therou - $500k

Reed Green would have to take priority. We’re losing so much money and missing out on a massive money maker.

Truthfully would probably need to move some of the Reed Green/IPF money over to the Track and Field and softball move. It’d be cool to have all of our athletic facilities on this side of 49. Also would move the ROTC Challenge course somewhere else and make all of that into parking for the athletic complex since baseball, softball, basketball, beach and indoor volleyball, T&F would all be in one condensed location.

You'd either have to have more approved by the IHL or raise private funds. You can't move Reed Green money supported by the city tax and you can't move IHL approved money to different projects.

Not what is actually been allocated in real life.
