RE: Michigan universities see decline in enrollment; numbers increase at community colleg
The past couple years with this online nonsense I would definitely encourage any student to take classes at KVCC vs WMU.

Also, with revenue decreasing, I'd like to know if they are decreasing costs to offset. I saw something where CMU lost 43% enrollment but faculty remained about the same. It seems they are all increasing spending with shiny new buildings to remain relevant. Diminishing returns...

They say KVCC's enrollment is up 50% from 2020 to 2021, and that's great, but also sort of misleading. Their enrollment fluctuates quite a bit, and they are rebounding rather than growing. In 2012, they had 12,000 students. Then they were down to 6,600 in 2019 or 2020. Now I think they're up to 10,000 again.

How to Lie with Statistics, ya, I read that book. 07-coffee3

I would be curious to see a report that links college enrollment to kindergarten enrollment, past, present and future, 20 years out.

My wife and I have saved for our kids secondary education since they were born. We hoped to at least pay half of their education as I didn't want them walking out of college with a mortgage payment. Both of them attended community college and received a scholarship. I wouldn't have them do it any other way with the cost of tuition these days.

The Army paid for my tuition, otherwise I would've done the same thing. The cost of attending a 4-year university is highway robbery these days.

I took night classes at Henry Ford Community College prior to enrolling at WMU. A lot of those KVCC students will be transferring to Western a year or two down the road.

Every university tries to market themselves the same way. "We are a dynamic and diverse research institution with students from all 50 states and 210 countries" then videos of people dancing, the marching band, diverse student body, someone in a lab coat. Why don't we appeal to working class students concerned with costs who live in the region? Why is this so difficult? Seems to me we will always lose out to Michigan and Michigan State when we emphasize the same thing

This is an interesting point. We're not going to beat U-M/MSU at their own game, so we need to offer something different. Give students a reason to choose Western. We're at the point in Michigan and the Midwest where there are too many colleges/universities and not enough HS grads to go around. We need to do something to separate ourselves from the pack. Maybe focus on the connections we already have with certain companies and industries? Stryker, Pfizer, Zoetis, Bronson, Borgess, the airlines and aviation industry, supply chain management, manufacturing, high tech industry. The "sure thing" programs and partnerships. It hurts to say because my wife and I were both liberal arts majors, and we loved our time at Western. But it's getting to the point where we need to ask these questions. If WMU wants to survive, we'll have to be associated with several high-performing programs, and not just be another 4-year public university that you could pick out of a hat.

And when you look at the radius where Western can draw students from, what are the demographics and culture like? It's a blue collar/industrial area of the state in an industrial part of the country. Detroit, Chicago, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Benton Harbor/St. Joseph, Jackson, Niles, Lansing, northern Indiana. What do the people here want and need? What can Western do to SERVE its students and the community?

WMU needs to market better in the Kent-Ottawa counties. This is the fastest growing area in Michigan, and 1 of the highest in nation actually.

GVSU has over 7000 students from these 2 counties. WMU only has 1500. I know it's in GVSUs backyard so it's difficult. GVSU is also spanking WMU in Wayne/Oakland counties. 4000-2000.

It's frustrating, WMU is too arrogant to admit GVSU is our main competition for students. They have a fantasy that we're competing with MSU.

GVSU also doesn't have a top ranked mens D1 hockey program who plays in the country's toughest conference vs top ranked teams week in and week out. They also don't have the Lawson Lunatics. WMU Hockey is the #1 student social scene 7 months out of the year, in all of Western Michigan, with a coach/team who plays a blue collar, exciting style of hockey.

If they did some research and a competitive analysis, they would know and should be able to figure out a way to better position WMU.

I agree, which is why I'd love to see WMU host a tourney at van andel every year to engage the community. There is a large youth hockey scene in GR, it would be a way to get kids thinking WMU at an early age. Invite ND, and rotate the other 2 with Ferris, BG, Miami, OSU, Wisc..F the GLI which is now home games at UM and MSU.

or, seeing the GLI is ran by Tech and how Mich F _ _ K over WMU, Tech should drop Mich., replace them with WMU and start hosting the GLI at GR. Mich could then be one of the rotational teams.

WMU should work with GR on hosting MW Regional @ GR

All of this. Eff Little Caesars Arena, eff Michigan. If I'm Tech, I'm looking at Van Andel and inviting WMU, Ferris or MSU, and Notre Dame. Detroit is bored of thr GLI? I think with those teams it would draw well in GR.

A CMU exec said the same thing in the Snooze story about CMU's plummeting enrollment--that their biggest competitor is msu and NOT gvsu. WMU suffers from the same disease.

UM and MSU taking a greater share of a declining pool of eligible college grads is the #1 reason why WMU (and the other mid-tier schools) have fast declining enrollment, but it is also because GVSU has done a great job in a growing GR to make it more attractive to students who DON'T get accepted to MSU or UM. This is plainly obvious to anyone with their head on straight. Obviously #2 would be the growing cost of a college education cutting the market from out under the mid-tier colleges.

I'll say this: We have a great location in comparison to the vast majority of our competition in the state. We are half way between Detroit and Chicago. Plus, we are an easy commute home from Ann Arbor, Jackson, Lansing, Battle Creek, and Grand Rapids -- which I include Holland and Muskegon. IMO, we should be the #1 choice outside of MSU and UM for non-commuter school students.

Reports from last fall show non-Michigan student enrollment at UM of 48% & MSU of 18%.
