With a city population of 215,006 as of 2020 Census, Huntsville passed Birmingham (200,733) as the largest city in Alabama. Montgomery is 3rd (200,603) but only sits 130 people behind Birmingham. Of course Birmingham still has the largest metropolitan area in the state.

Or doesn't really matter at all. I knew Huntsville would pass Birmingham but not Montgomery. Just thought it was interesting.

This reminds me that Atlanta is ranked below a dozen mid sized cities … except that it is not.

Geez, I just posted info and asked if anyone knew about it. And the fact that Birmingham's city population has been on the decline for over a decade is a cause for concern even if it doesn't matter to most of you.

haha...I was curious to see where this thread went. as expected, a bucket full of negativity

Mobile is also shrinking, but the eastern shore is growing like crazy because everyone is moving across the bay. Not sure of when you look at “Mobile Metro” if that includes the eastern shore, which it really should.

I am not seeing this negativity

I think the trend is reversing. So this decade may tell a different story.

Birmingham could always try to pull another 1910 and jump well back in the lead if it so chose. *not that there would be much chance of being successful in this day and age.

Yup. Here is an article talking about Birmingham's #2 spot and what it could mean for the city:

I do find it interesting that the article quotes the population of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area when the Federal Government is transitioning to combined statistical areas. The Greater Birmingham Combined Statistical Area which adds in the Cullman and Sylacauga/Talladega Micropolitan Areas has a population of 1,350,646 as of the 2020 census moving Birmingham from the 50th largest Statistical (Metropolitan) area to the 42nd.

For comparison the Huntsville-Decatur-Albertville Combined Statistical Area has a population of 770,480 (57.3% of the Birmingham region) and the 64th largest statistical area in the country. Huntsville has the benefit of not having 50+ suburban towns/cities surrounding it

That's because as soon as Birmingham elected its first Black Mayor, half the city moved over the mountain. Compare Shelby County's population in 1978 to now.

...there were rumblings a few years back that Fairfield could be 'absorbed' by Birmingham, but nothing has happened with that as far as I can tell... ...it has an estimated population of 10,000, which would make the Ham #1 again...

But if you go back to 78 that only account for 44 yrs. The population started declining in the 60s.
