RE: Bye Bye Strip Mall on Hillcrest
The city of DeKalb bought the theater and the entire Jungle/La Salsa buildings. The city has worked with all on relocation. All are scheduled for demolition and, the city is working with a broad Annie Glidden North (with significant NIU involvement) group to determine the best use of the land.

In addition, there are new owners for Lincoln Tower, Tri-Frat and 808 Ridge areas, Hunter Properties (400 units). Properties closed within the last few weeks.

The Jungle was definitely in the mall that is being torn down in the far west corner. The place that was protected from the riots is called Mike's Smoke and Food and is the old spot where the Jungle Liquor store was next to the bar Jungle. The Round the Clock diner is now a liquor store called Thirsty's.

I hope tearing the mall down is a sign of better times in the Greek Row area. As a father of three kids who have lived in Greek Row recently (including one now) it is definitely in need of an overall. The area is rough for sure, and definitely need to clear out the tough crowd for it to ultimately improve. It other threads I have said it, but it is true... the Greek Row area single handedly brings down the entire university. Without this area improving, NIU traction for improved image and enrollment will be stuck in the mud spinning. It really is that simple.

The city needs to guarantee no liquor stores, tobacco stores or dollar stores are ever in that area.

What businesses would you put there when you have the same scum living in that area? No matter what you put there will be subject to criminal activities. The first priority should be to clean the scum from the area.

A Walgreens/CVS or a bank. Can't have too many of those.

Absolutely perfect for armed robbery. Hear about what happened at the Walgreens in Sycamore?

Now there you may have something!! I may yet realize my dream of opening the Grotto West! I’m sure I would do a huge business there. I would even double my stock of pocket rockets when Toledo comes to town and horse prods when WMU comes to town!

Would that even be legal?

I'm assuming that's outside of their jurisdiction and would violate something if they put up shop there and started patrolling the area.

NIU PD already patrols the entire north area off campus and has set up the nursing building as a satellite police station. Something about them being licensed through the state gives them jurisdiction pretty much wherever they want. The whole north area is crawling with cops from NIU and dekalb during the night and it’s never enough.

Going back to late 70s on this one, but was it the Jungle or Red Lion first?
Used to enjoy listening to the Real Rick McDowell band there.

Red Lion.
Great venue for bands with two levels.

Not sure what year it was renamed The Jungle.
