The women will play at Toledo, the regular-season MAC champions, on Monday in the second round of the WNIT.
Toledo (27-5) beat Houston Baptist, co-champions of the Southland Conference, 61-51 Friday. Houston Baptist's season ends at 16-11.
Kent State's record is 19-11. The Flashes played Toledo only once this season and lost 69-60 in December in the first game of the MAC season. Kent State led 45-43 going into the fourth quarter of that game.
The Flashes then struggled to a 10-10 MAC record, finished in a tie for sixth place and missed the league tournament due to tiebreaker procedures.
Toledo went 19-1 in MAC play but lost to Ball State in the tournament semifinals.
The WNIT usually avoids having two teams in the same conference play early in the WNIT. The only reason I can figure out was that the tournament schedules early games geographically to save on travel. Five MAC teams made the WNIT, so the tournament's options were limited.
Teams can pay (even bid against each other) to host a WNIT game. Toledo has hosted 18 games in a row, including six on its way to winning the tournament in 2011. Overall Toledo is 23-11 in the WNIT; Kent State is 2-5.
Against Houston Baptist, Toledo jumped to a 26-11 first-quarter lead, then didn't do much for the rest of the game. The Rockets shot only 26.1% and 28.6% after the first quarter. Houston Baptist shot 33.3% for the game.
Monday's game will be at 7 p.m. Broadcast information hasn't been posted yet, but I would think the game would be streamed on ESPN3 or ESPN+. Audio will be on the Golden Flashes Radio Network.
