RE: NIU Hoops Recruits for 2022-23
I appreciate all this great, in-depth info on our MBB recruits. If this year's team is an indication of the future with Burno we will be in solid shape for success in the near future if (a big if) we get some talent on the squad.

This team pulls for each other and play their tails off every game. As frustrating as this season has been, it has been an easy team to root for with the heart and resilience they play with. A culture is being cultivated and it takes time.

I'm not by any means of a judge on talent, but it seems that Coach looks for those diamonds in the rough like with Coit and Kon.

It is also interesting that with the recruits of Powell and Nutter( that name cracks me up), he got the 18th and 34 top JUCO players this year. That does not mean you will get wins in Div 1 games, but the one trait I like with both of these guys is they are highly athletic.

It is also interesting that he is going after top JUCO players. They have a choice of being a role player for a P5 team or start for a Mid Major Div 1 team. As bad as a team NIU is right now, I do see why recruits might be intrigued with Coach Burno's program.

The only thing I wish we had was more height.
Maybe he is gearing up for 3 or 4 guard offense, which is not good for a long season, but in 1 and done tourneys, it is an intriguing concept.

I too wish he'd get at least one more big in the fold. I really am not a fan of Chris Osten's play but if he's still on the team (next year) it alleviates some of that need.

Coach has three really intriguing guys though in Montavious Myrick, Maurice Mitchell and Xavier Amos but they are real short on experience.

That's why I'd like to see them grab one of those JUCO guys. I might actually like both Panov and Niederhauser more but 1) neither of them are center's (but I really like both of their size and game) and 2) they're both high schoolers. Granted, maybe getting a true 6'10" to 6'11" center isn't necessary but I just think a guy like Jerome Palm would provide a little stability.

With that said, I think Williams is playing his "freshman" year so it pushes the window back a year (as opposed to him being a sophomore) so maybe he can get a high schooler and it makes more sense to develop them.

It's gonna suck to struggle so much next year as well since we do have a special talent in Williams but if he's on board with the long term vision, this could turn out to be a really interesting team in 2 years.

By the way, I know what you mean when you say "diamonds in the rough" but, that cliche is one of the most mis-understood and mis-used sayings there is. Usually, people think it's a compliment when it's actually the opposite. Or, at the very least, a back-handed compliment.

Btw, I'm not making fun of you for mis-using the phrase. Most people do and I did have to look it up to remind myself exactly what it means. But I heard that a year or so ago and it surprised me too.

In case anyone didn't know, a "diamond in the rough" is someone who is generally good of character but lacks manners, education or style.

RE: NIU Hoops Recruits for 2022-23
whenever someone said you "diamond in the rough", they see your self as a Rough Stone and they can able to see you as a diamond, you must go through the process of cutting your negative points and polishing your skills, and you became a diamond.

"diamond in the rough" it's an always compliment

Any recruiting world it suggests that others missed the real qualities and in fact the player is better than what others saw. That is the wait for a mid major to get a better player – someone who was overlooked or under evaluated.

Still really hoping for Jaylen Drane in this class. I know he's a small ish PG, but getting 2 city HS kids in this class would be a good signal to coaches there that our program is making them a priority.

RE: NIU Hoops Recruits for 2022-23
NIU Recruiting Update - HS Senior

This is what I wrote about him when Burno made the offer (about 2 weeks ago):

Yanic Konan Niederhäuser - COMMITTED - HS Senior - 6’9” - PF - 2* recruit from Ehingen Uprising (a team in German but born in Fräshels, Switzerland) - Ok…where to start. This kid is tall and lanky. I’ve seen him listed at 6’10” but he’s got big hair so maybe they aren’t sure. He seems athletic. Anytime I see a kid from Europe, I assume he started out playing soccer and that really helps with footwork. Nevertheless, he looks to move really well for as tall as he is. He’s not an explosive player or jumper. He doesn’t play all that physical but he’s aggressive. He’s got a decent enough shot from the perimeter to keep defenders honest, imo. He’s also playing for the Swiss U18 squad. The first video I watched was from FIBA and some U18 tournament. He looked dominant but he was also like 6 inches taller than almost anyone on the floor. In other words, there was almost nothing to gain from the video. Now, the second video I watched, I liked him more. I think the team he plays for a team in the NBBL which is the “highest German basketball league for players under 19”. The team he’s listed as playing for (Ehingen Uprising) isn’t in that league but is in ProA, which is a 2nd division team. I’ve also seen him listed as playing for Uprising SmartBall and I think that’s the team he’s playing for in the NBBL video, but I can’t find evidence that team even exists, let alone is part of that league. Anyway…he looks better in this video as the competition looks a little better and it highlights certain attributes (ie, inside scoring, outsides scoring, rebounding, steals, etc). He appears to be active away from the ball and have good instincts. He’s aggressive (as I said earlier) and finds his way going toward the basket. He can dribble the ball comfortably in the open court and, like I said, step behind the line and knock down a 3.

Man…this kid is intriguing and is the 3rd in a row that Burno has made an offer to from Europe (depending on what part of Russia is in Europe). I’m betting he’s raw but he’s athletic and tall and you can’t teach that. He does have one other offer on the table from Bryant which he got back in August. So, he’s not gotten a ton of attention but, not playing for an academy here in the states probably hampers that a little for a 2* kind of guy. I’d also like to point out that Burno seems to be targeting post players. Palm, Panov and now Niederhäuser (the three Europeans).

RE: NIU Hoops Recruits for 2022-23
At this point, I have to think Coach has filled all of his scholarships unless someone transfers. I check all the time (since the end of the season) and always expect someone to show up on the transfers portal but no one has yet.

I think this signing also indicates that Chris Osten is gone. Which...whatever. He's not good and he wasn't even with the team for the last 2 months so no one cares.

I'm really glad Burno was able to get another big man.

Our post has almost no experience to speak of but is pretty deep and talented.

Assuming all of them enroll and show up, our post will consist of:

Martice Mitchell - 6'10"
Montavious Myrick - 6'8"
Xavier Amos - 6'8"
Yanic Niederahuser - 6'10"
Edward Manuel (I'm including him because he's more of an inside guy) - 6'6"

There's going to be some growing pains with that group considering all of them (not counting Manuel) will be in their sophomore or freshman seasons.

But, being that I liked the improvement I saw from both Okanu and Makuoi this year, I think/hope Burno has someone on his staff that works really well with bigs.

Justin Thomas who was a point guard here a few years ago is still playing at Alcorn St his 3rd team and was just named to the SWAC Conference tournament 1st team.

Yup. He's one that just keeps on finding a place.

He started his career at NIU way back in 2016. Figuring he was 18 when he started, that would make him 24 years old. There are guys who wash out of the NBA before they hit 24.

But, I suppose if you go from the MAC to the OVC and then to the SWAC...you can find a place to play if you look hard enough.

Maybe next year he'll figure out how to be a player/coach for a Southland school.

RE: NIU Hoops Recruits for 2022-23
I've mentioned a couple of times that the numbers are funny and it looks like we're bringing in substantially more players than we have leaving (ie, openings).

So, I check the transfer news multiple times a day and something interesting I've been seeing.

While the portal has seen a lot of activity in the past few days (expected), literally no one from the MAC has hit the portal yet. There was like 1 or 2 hit the portal a month or so ago when odd things happen. But now that its 100% portal season, nothing. Nada. Zip...from the MAC.

I expect something to happen any day now (from the conference) but it's just odd to see all these players hitting the portal and not one from the MAC.

No one from EMU yet? They are good for about 8 outbound transfers/year.

RE: NIU Hoops Recruits for 2022-23
NIU Recruiting Update (JUCO):

Something is up because Burno (already 7 players committed for next season), is still making offers to JUCO players (this time..he's back to the guards...he loves guards). The latest...

Kieves “Deuce” Turner - JUCO Freshman - 6’2” - SG - 2* recruit from South Plains College (JUCO - Levelland, TX) - Malvern Prep School (Malvern, PA) - born in Coatesville, PA - Deuce started his career at Bucknell where he played in 11 games (1 start) and averaged 8.3 ppg and 19.9 minutes but transferred out and apparently was able to call last year a red shirt because he’s listed as a freshman at South Plains College. At SPC, Turner has played in 28 games (23 starts) averaging 18.5 ppg and 23.1 minutes shooting 44.2% from the field (38.2% 3PT - 71 of 186) and 89.4% FT (144 of 161). He’s not that big but is strongly built. He can go to the basket if need be but his bread and butter is on the perimeter. He’s got a compact shot and can dial it up from a really long distance stretching the defense out well beyond the arc. Otherwise, it’s hard to tell much. He’s getting a lot of attention, I will say that. In addition to his offer from NIU, Turner has additional offers on the table from IUPUI, UTRGV, McNeese, and Tarleton. Obviously, playing JUCO in Texas is going to get some Lone Star State attention, but now he’s getting it up north as well. The offers from NIU, IUPUI, UTRGV, and McNees all came in today (3/15/22).

Drake Allen - JUCO Freshman - 6’4” - SG - 2* recruit from Snow College (Ephriam, UT) - Westlake HS (Saratoga Springs, UT) - born in Eagle Mountain, UT - Allen is getting a lot of attention right now. He’s played 1 season at Snow and has played in 33 games (all starts) averaging 30.2 minutes and 12.9 ppg/2.21 steals/4.7 rebounds and 5.9 assists shooting 53.8% from the field (28.6% 3PT - 24 of 84) and 62.9% FT (73 of 116). When I watch him, the word “clever” comes to mind. I bet he’s a pain in the ass to play against. He’s not that big and not overly fast. He is quick and is a good jumper though. He just seems like a guy who would annoy the other team. I didn’t see video of him diving on the floor but I bet that’s part of what you get with him. He had a lot of Tyler Cochran things about him with his steals (sneaking up behind guys and poking the ball away…stuff like that). His outside shot is average and he doesn’t light it up from outside but he can make a shot from there. His instincts tell him to go to the basket. It appears he makes about 99% of his points from about 1 foot from the basket. He’s clever in getting around defenders (ie, he doesn’t blow them away as much as he just tricks them…which may very well not play at the D-1 level). Again, he’s a good jumper and can easily dunk the ball (he does it a lot…) but his size concerns me. At least he’s kinda tall for a guard. To play more inside, he’d definitely have to put on bulk. In addition to NIU, Allen has offers on the table from IUPUI, Radford, FIU, SIUe, Bowling Green, Southern Indiana, Western Illinois, Southern Utah, Northern Arizona, and NJIT. The offers from NIU, IUPUI, Radford and FIU all came in today (3/15/22) and the offers from SIUe, Bowling Green, Southern Indiana, and Western Illinois came in yesterday (3/14/22). So, interest in him has heated up real quick.

I am perplexed by this. I can't figure out the roster. My best guess is we have to have 1 (probably 2) guys leave the team just to get what we have coming in on the roster. But now Burno has made two more offers. And I can't believe this is for next year (both guys could play one more year at JUCO) since they're both getting a ton of offers right now.

So, your guess is as good as mine as to what is up.

If they still have a year of juco eligibility, maybe he is offering them for the year after (if that can be done. I don’t know).

For sure it can be done. Coaches make offers to HS sophomores. Problem is, a HS sophomore can't choose to go to college after that season whereas a JUCO Freshman can.

It's quite possible this is exactly what is happening. I'm just in doubt since they have so many other offers.

Upon further evaluation, maybe you are correct. Burno made another offer I just noticed this morning of a HS Junior. So, yeah...maybe those JUCOs are to come in as juniors and not sophomores.

I dunno.

It's kind of funny I made comment about the MAC seeing no transfer action and then immediately moves start to transpire.

Then...the big shoe drops and Ball State fires Whitford and now all hell is breaking lose there as Payton Sparks has hit the transfer portal.

This also may undermine my prediction that Kaleb Thornton will follow his buddy Cochran to the Cardinals.

Also...how's that move going for ya Tyler? Happy?

Tyler Cochran....coach killer?

Heh...

It is much more likely Tyler joins Thorton back in the Dekalb

Second transfer requires sitting out a year.
