Saw this out there and I don’t think it has been discussed. It appears there is a proposal to allow joint practice sessions between FBS teams. UC could go up to tOSU and practice or have Louisville come in to Nippert for practice.

I definitely can see this being passed. Heck, if they opened up the practice I could see people paying for the right opponent.

Would be a way to keep "the rivalry" with MoO without having to sacrifice a game over it. Just make it a scrimmage.

UK, Miami, UL, OSU, Ball State are best candidates.

I'd like to see UC v. Mt St. Joe.

I think the real money is allowing a 2 to 3 game spring exhibition season as part of spring practice. Obviously these games wouldn’t count but it could be a way to sell tickets and create more buy games.

Coaches have been asking for a scrimmage against another team in a controlled environment for years. There is a lot riding on every game in CFB and it is better to know what works and what doesn’t in a scrimmage vs. a real game.

Previously, the big schools used MAC/FCS like teams to do just that. I'm guessing this is step 7 of starting to break away from the NCAA, or at the very least eliminate buy games.

We already play annual scrimmages against Miami.

The 4-team playoff puts pressure on the games against FCS/Miami types. When UC only beats Miami 49-14 while you are rotating guys there is some talking head on ESPN going “Meh, that win was not that impressive.”

I absolutely despise this idea. It's just another way to separate the have's from the have-not's of college sports. Two to three preseason games for Ohio State at 100,000 per game is another $20M-$30M in revenue. The divide is just going to grow larger. Even with UC in the Big12 they will lose further ground.

They were struggling to get 80,000+ in seats for their early season games this year...I don't think they'd get that kind of attendance for games that absolutely don't matter at a pricepoint like that...but I do get what you're saying in general.

I just hate the idea of scrimmages because you increase the likelihood of injuries occurring in meaningless contests prior to the season actually starting, but that's just me, as a coach, who had two of his best players tear ACLs in pre-season scrimmages last HS season talking

I mostly agree. For teams like UC, it matters. For teams like OSU, it doesn't. They get built in excuses for whatever reason.

2 Preseason games
2 Non-Conference games with the alliance
10 Conference games (I'm guessing it goes to this)
12 team playoff (4 possible playoff games)

Roughly 18 games possible. They might have to create an in-season transfer portal, but I don't want to give them any ideas.

It does and it doesn't. Pretty sure there has never been a 1 or 0 loss P5 conference champion left out of the playoff. Once UC is in the Big 12 they will likely control their own destiny every season.
