Klake---thanks for the chuckle---that is the post of the week! I wouldn't be able to come up with that much detail on my son if he was playing.

Great job and info, Big Red.

I honestly wasn't sure what to do with Mitchell. I know the reports from back in April or May were that he was transferring to NIU but he's not on the roster and he's nowhere to be found with a google search.

I mean...I'd love to have the 7 footer from Bloom Township on the team eve though he was basically wallpaper in his first year at Minnesota. That means little to how he'd do in the MAC.

But it's a mystery as to where he is, what he's currently doing (I can't even find him on a JUCO roster).

The only video on him is from high school so...

If anyone has ANY information on him, I'd love to hear it.

Drane was all-tournament first team and led Simeon on a huge comeback against New Trier and championship over Curie.

Drane also played really well last night against Kenwood from what I've seen on Twitter. Anyone who's following high school hoops this year knows Kenwood/Simeon has top tier talent and will be right there behind Glenbard West for a state title run. If we land him he's coming in as one of those guys that's used to playing against the best, even nationally. Small but mighty fish big pond guy.

One other thing.

There are two future recruits on the board who have me intrigued and they both play for St. Rita. Kaiden Space is a quite small (5'10" if he's lucky...) junior guard and James Brown is a 6'8" sophomore and both are getting a lot of attention that I've seen.

Wondering if you've seen them play and what your thoughts are. My buddy was real high on Space but didn't recall ever seeing Brown.
I've not seen St. Rita in person this year. Will definitely keep an eye out come playoff time, thanks.

per what coach told me at a football game tailgate he is coming next year. I have Burno's cell number as he gave it to me, but don't think I'll text him that question...03-wink

Anyone know the story on this kid? 7'3" and no college offers from what I have seen and plays in NIU's backyard at Bartlett.

I'm sure he's great when the next tallest guy on the floor is 6'6".

With that said, I wouldn't be opposed to bringing him in and developing him.

Looks like he is definitely worth a look. Has some athleticism (from limited twitter posts), innate passing ability, soft touch, and appears to have the drive. Very much worth getting to know him better. (Obviously has the height as well and appears to have a build to play strong.)

RE: NIU Hoops Recruits for 2022-23
I'm going to elicit some help from the community here.

I'm trying to figure out how many scholarships Coach Burno has to offer (and how many have been allotted for next season).

The NIU website says there are 6 seniors on the team (Hankerson, Osten, Okanu, Kueth, Makuoi, and Crump). If I remember correctly, when Osten transferred, it was reported he had two more years of eligibility.

Now, with the extra year of eligibility that was granted by the NCAA, all of these guys wouldn't count against the scholarship cap except Osten since he transferred after the extra year was awarded (if he'd had stayed at ASU, his scholarship wouldn't count against their number).

Now, I use Verbal Commits a lot for a reference and the coronavirus seems to have done a number on how it understands things as well. For one, none of these guys are listed as seniors. I think that site just bumped everyone down (who qualified) a year as a way to identify years remaining and, lets be honest, year classification (freshman, sophomore, etc) doesn't really matter with red shirts and whatnot. What matters is years remaining.

With that said, they have Crump listed as a sophomore (which would be a junior but with two more years remaining). It would also indicate, his scholarship will count for one more year.

Anyway...

Apparently Burno has inked 4 players for next year (Yazid Powell - JUCO, Xavier Amos - Whitney Young, David Coit - JUCO, and supposedly Martice Mitchell - Minnesota).

That leaves either one or two scholarships available (sans any unforeseen transfers, which...I can maybe speculate upon in a bit).

Whether he has one or two, I would have to say the primary player on my wish list is Anthony Roy, the JUCO player who started out at San Francisco.

However, if there's two scholarships available, I'm now a little open to being persuaded by the community.

I really like the size of Takai Hardy, but I also hear really good things about Jalen Drane, plus Drane is a Chicago kid (and from a prominent basketball school - Simeon) so I'd be interested in Burno being a legitimate player with those schools.

So, Hardy or Drane? They're completely different.

One's a guard, the other a post player.

Guards next year would be: Kaleb Thornton, Yazid Powell, Zion Russell, Keshawn Williams, Noah Kon, Darweshi Hunter, Anthony Roy (in my fantasy roster build), and maybe Anthony Crump. Then at Small Forward, you just have Edward Manuel although, some of those guards would fill into that role, most notably a guys like Crump, Hunter or Powell. Plus, the off chance that Kueth comes back.

Then, in the post, you have Osten (who no one wants to see with prominent playing time), Amos, Montavious Myrick, Martice Mitchell, and maybe one or all of Makuoi and Okanu.

Personally, I could very well see Kueth, Makuoi, Okanu and Hankerson leaving the program. But I'd bet every internet dollar I own that Crump will be back (if he's eligible to do so). Let me see if I can clean this up:

PG
Kaleb Thornton
Keshawn Williams
Noah Kon
David Coit (I forget about him earlier)

SG
Yazid Powell
Zion Russell
Darweshi Hunter
Anthony Roy (in my dream)

SF
Edward Emanuel
Anthony Crump (maybe not counting against scholarship number)

Forward
Xavier Amos,
Montavious Myrik
Takai Hardy (or Jaylen Drane as a guard)

Center/Forward
Chris Osten
Martice Mitchell

Hmmm....That's 14 scholarships.

And this is the issue I keep running into. I think I keep forgetting about Coit, who...I'm being honest...I'm not sure of the attraction to him and why he's signed up. He's probably better than I anticipate and I'm sure we'll have at least one more player transfer out to open up that last scholarship I need to get either Hardy or Drane.

I guess what I was trying to point out to myself is how crowded the guard position is and how a guy like Hardy is more needed. I suppose it would help if I could ever fully understand if Mitchell is actually coming to NIU. That would clear things up and maybe allow me to soften my stance on Hardy.

Anyway, that's a lot of words (and in a confusing order). Any thoughts or clarifications?

Feels like Burno has to get in with Chicago high schools to be successful.. even if Drane is a reach / not a perfect fit, I think you still take him if you can. Gotta build that pipeline to have a real future.

Too early to tell who is actually coming and who is going. Some will move on at their choosing and others will be “encouraged” or helped to find other places. I anticipate Coach Burno using the transfer portal considerably and I am sure he will work out the numbers to fit the guys he really wants and can get.

I agree its too early to tell. But I know Burno is already thinking about it so sometimes I start to try to think along with him (even though he knows so much more than I ever could about the roster makeup of this program).

NIU Recruiting Update:

Mamborou Mara - HS Senior - 6’7” - SF - Royal Crown Academic School (Toronto, ON - born in Conarky, Guinea) - Ok…here’s the type of offer that gets me to thinking. First of all, this kid could be a legend at NIU or he could completely fizzle out. I literally have no clue. His story (of what I can get by peeking around the edges of a paywall, is pretty remarkable. As noted, he’s from Guinea but fled the country during a coup and left his entire family (parents and 5 siblings) behind to play basketball in Toronto at Royal Crown. His dad had one piece of advice for him…be humble. Now…finding video of him is challenging. I’ve not yet found any from him playing at Royal Crown, but I have found one highlight package of him playing for his native country in the U18 Africa Tournament where he averaged 19.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.3 steals and 1.5 blocks. How many games? I’m not sure. Also, when I watch the video, he’s just bullying his opponents. He’s ridiculously athletic (he doesn’t look 6’7” to me on the video but the quality is terrible, it’s a year old and I have no idea how tall the other guys are…also, the video looks kind of compressed because there’s a guy who literally looks like he’s 5 feet tall…so there’s a lot of things…but everything else I’ve seen, including an article in the Toronto Star…says he’s 6’7”). He can fly and he just overpowers everyone on the court. He looks like a young Michael Jordan (and I say that knowing full well how that comes off) but again, I’m sure the talent in the U18 Africa Tournament is not good so, grains of salt and all. So, yeah, the outlook for this guy is a mystery. The Toronto Star says he’s getting attention from D-I schools but NIU is the only offer he’s received. I’m interested to see some other offers come in if for no other reason than to get some kind of gage on how coaches value him. But…until then…we’ll just have to wait and see and with NIU realistically only having 1 or 2 remaining scholarships available at this point, it’ll be interesting to see where Coach Burno focuses on the final additions.

RE: NIU Hoops Recruits for 2022-23
Victor Panov - 6’7” (I’ve also seen 6”8” recently) - PF - HS Senior - 2* recruit from DME Academy (Daytona Beach, FL - born in Russia) - It’s hard to find much video of Panov at all. What I did find was mostly on Twitter but a lot of it is just repeated/retweeted stuff saying the same thing over and over. What I can say is Panov is strongly built and all of the articles I could find said he plays a physical game inside and runs the floor well and can step back and hit a 3. In a recent game against Rock Hoops (which, apparently is a good team but I have no idea) Panov scored 25 points (3 threes) to lead DME in the close loss.

I don’t know a ton about him but DME (and anything affiliated with them or buying into the program) is really promoting Panov as a hidden gem that is flying under the radar of D-1 coaches. Obviously, grain of salt and all. But there are some recent articles popping up about him (although most are just regurgitated from one article). This offer from NIU is Panov’s first D-1 offer. It’ll be interesting to see if others start to pop up with the social media push from DME.

Looks like 4 games at Africa U18s

I totally forgot to mention that part for Panov. I'm not sure about U18 but he did play for the Russian U16 team.

RE: NIU Hoops Recruits for 2022-23
NIU Recruiting Update (JUCO):

Jerome Palm
- JUCO Sophomore - 6’10” - PF - 2* recruit from O.S.G Echnaton (born in Almere, Netherlands) - Hillsborogh CC (Hillsborogh County, Florida) - Palm started his college career at Daytona State College (JUCO) and plays this year at Hillsborogh CC. This year for the Hawks, Palm has played in 22 games (7 starts) averaging 15.1 minutes and 8.9 ppg shooting 53% from the field (28.6% 3PT - 2 of 7) and 59.4% FT (19 of 32). To be honest, when I watched his videos, I was resigned to us getting him. He’s huge. He’s built like an NBA player. Big, super strong, and looks like a grown man. He’s athletic, runs the floor well, and can bully the opposition inside. I figured if Burno is wanting to put up some wins next year, he’s got the guards to do it, he needs muscle inside and this guy provides it. But then I looked at the numbers and my opinion started to change. Now granted, he could have had injury concerns keeping him out of the lineup. But only 7 starts so far is concerning. Also, his shooting away from the rim is troublesome. Sure, he can step back and hit a 3 from time to time…and that’s all fine and dandy. But his FT shooting this year is barely above Crump-level. I checked his numbers at Daytona SC and they are better…but not much. Coming from The Netherlands, I kind of wonder how finished this guy is and if there’s more here than is apparent. Yeah, he’s huge and athletic. But is he at all reliable? Really, if Burno could improve his FT up to about 70%, he’d probably be a pretty good guy to have in the MAC, which doesn’t really have a ton of guys like this (and when someone does…it matters). Also, we (at this point in the game) only have 1 or maybe 2 more scholarships available. A guy like this...maybe they could get as a walk-on. I just like some other guys better than this guy, but then again…maybe those guys are leaning hard in another direction and Burno knows that.

NIU is his only offer so far.
