Wow. That dude is huge. I mean, the athletic director person from UNO.

He's 6'8".

He played hoops for Memphis State in the late 80s/early 90s, on a team or two with Penny Hardaway.

Yep. I thought I recognized the name.

C-USA invite should be in the mail any minute

They were original members of the Sun Belt before Katrina destroyed their program. It would only be fair that they go back there for their FBS tryouts.

They were founding members of the Sun Belt Conference, but they left long before Katrina. They were forced out by the other members in 1980 due to inadequate facilities.

That same problem would likely plague football. There just isn't money there, IMO.

I remember the Privateers. They were non-football affiliates of the Sun Belt along with Arkansas-Little Rock, Denver, South Alabama, and Florida International before Katrina in the early 2000s. They had to withdraw from the Sun Belt because of Katrina. They couldn't maintain D1 status on a waiver a few years after Katrina.

Alright, point taken. I thought they left in 1980 and never were associated with the SBC again. I did not know they became members again from 1991-2010.

It's more complicated than that. For some reason I fell down the rabbit hole the other day on another board trying to understand the UNO conference history. They were founders of the SB and got kicked out. But they returned when the American South merged into the SB. They left that when they decided to go to D2. They very quickly reversed that decision.

69-75 D2
76-80 Sun Belt
80-87 Independent
87-91 American South
(1991 American South merges into the Sun Belt)
91-10 Sun Belt
10-12 Independent trying to go D2
13-now Southland

It's even slightly more complicated than that. In 2009, UNO initially sought to move down to D3, and in 2010 was given initial approval by the NCAA to do this. UNO also planned to add football when it moved to D3.

But before they did this, they decided to move down to D2 instead, without football.

But then in March 2012, they reversed course and remained at D1.

Even with all of that, I don't know what level they competed at in the 2011-2012. I'm not even sure they had hoops that season.

Between 2005-2015 there were a lot of waivers, expired deadlines, etc that really altered what UNO had pre-Katrina.

They technically never left Division I and thus were a Division I Independent. It was all so strange and they even played a Gulf South schedule in some sports as part of a planned transition to Division II.

With the southland struggling for football membership, I could see them saying “hey, you need to start a football program or start thinking about independence”. I can’t think of any other conferences that would take them… maybe the ASUN? But that would be a stretch.

Alternatively, UNO is being proactive in case the Southland gets torn apart and they need to find a new home.

The Southland is at 5 football, 2 nonfootball with A&M Commerce upgrading. they're not in a position to kick anyone out.

Yeah, the Southland doesn’t have much breathing room to be forcing anyone out like the Sun Belt did.

Kennesaw is in an NFL market with a huge P5 shadow and seem to be doing OK.

Yes, I do not recall the politics of why they first wanted D3+Football then D2 with no football to back to D1 with no football during that 2009-2012 time frame. I mean, I am not sure UNO actually played hoops in 2011-2012, can find no records of games played.

And politics had to be involved, because in 2011, they also had a major institutional shift. Historically, UNO was part of the LSU system, but in 2011 they were shifted from the LSU umbrella to the University of Louisiana system, which includes LA-Tech, LA-Monroe, LA-Lafayette and others. So that likely was wrapped up in all this too.

And *that* was happening in the depths of the Jindal administration, when Jindal was slashing budgets for state universities left and right.

So I wish someone would sort it out, LOL.

2011-12 they went 17-15, playing a schedule that was a mix of schools across divisions

I don't know how they're going to pull this off. Tulane is already third banana behind the Saints and LSU. I'm not sure if there's enough interest, even with UNO being a public school.

Tad Gormley would be very difficult for them to secure for all their games. It is booked solid with high school teams as there aren't many options in New Orleans.

Ideally I think UNO would focus on building a stadium that can be used for soccer and rugby also. They can make money renting it out to high school teams as there is a demand for that. Minor league soccer and rugby teams could also use it ideally. They have room around their campus for a good sized stadium.

I think a 20,000-seat stadium would be ideal. That is, if the idea is to ultimately move up to FBS. Otherwise, a 10-15,000-seat stadium would be more beneficial to the Privateers.

Why not the Superdome? Does it really matter if not all the seats are filled? The attendance and seating capacity requirements may be vastly reduced at the new Division 1-AA after the Pay-for-Play Autonomy schools break away from the Gang of 5. And the current FCS 1-AA becoming 1-AAA would likely require much less.

Yes, it matters. One of the reasons to add football (even at the FBS level) is for greater alumni involvement. Tough to get alumni to get fully involved if you are playing off-campus. Also, a smaller stadium allows for a better atmosphere compared to a sea of empty seats. It is why UCF built the Bounce House even though it was with flimsy enough materials to enable the bouncing to occur.

Also the cost of opening/operating the Superdome is going to be a lot higher than a typical FCS stadium. I would bet they would lose money on each home game using the Superdome, unless the city gave them a real sweetheart deal.

I do not believe there is sustainable fan interest in a UNO football team, nor $$$ for facilities.

Maybe they will prove me wrong.
