Correct. His strength is recruiting--- I would accept if he came back in a role which was basically 100% recruiting. That's the name of the game- you have to be able to recruit as well as coach. Leave the coaching for the other guys, and let him come in and help recruit.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to recall his recruiting not being as good as you all think. He was hired to help secure the local Cincinnati talent and it was pretty evident immediately that area high school coaches didn't really have a good opinion of Coombs thus he was moved to the Indiana area. He secured a handful of good players out of Indiana but I don't think he was pulling in anymore talent than the other coaches.

My take would be to stay away from Coombs. There's got to be some great young and talented coaches out there that are hungry to prove themselves and can better relate to this younger generation of kids. We need the next Marcus Freeman (young and hungry) and not the next Tommy Tubberville (coasting into retirement).

I also heard there were local coaches with hurt butts over his beating them when at Colerain.

I'd imagine that most, if not all, of those guys are now gone...but that's a tough one to make up. I will say, Coombs took basically everyone he wanted to (with the exception of Jack Carman) out of the Tri State in the last few years at Ohio State.

OSU loved him. He recruited really well and was the VP of energy.

UC fans can be an odd bunch when it comes to him. I keep saying a lot of them might residually dislike him from when he used to kick their high school teams butts. This city and its HS allegiances.

I think there are a lot of extreme positions on Coombs on both sides. There were too many that viewed him has West Side Jesus and when Kelly left, or Butch Left or Tuberville was fired thought he should be the next head coach of UC. He was never an ideal candidate with the kind of coaching experience where that made any sense. (Had a MAC team ever taken a shot at him and he shown he could be a college head coach, he may have been an interesting guy down the road with the right coordinators in place)

Too many take the opposite approach that he can't coach at all. I wouldn't want him as a head coach or DC. I didn't think he did a great job coaching our DBs last time and I thought for the talent OSU had their secondary sometimes underachieved. That said I'd still take him has a position coach or ideally a Special Teams coach where I think he'd excel.

RE: Coaching Staff
As the only person on here who likely had experience with him in a college coaching capacity, he was fine as a Special Teams coach. It was clearly not the primary reason why he was on staff, but he got the guys fired up to play KOC and Jet and that's more than half the battle for most ST guys.

A balanced take on the man from my point of view too. I had a chance to spend some time with him at a dinner years ago when he was still @ OSU and he's very personable. But I think about the football mediocrity that Miami (OH) had endured for awhile and it begs the question, why wouldn't they have hired him as head coach with his southwest OH reputation and connections? Not all are cut out for FBS head coaching and that's okay.

Doesn't this beg its own set of questions? Those type of recruiting chops don't just appear. if he's that good, couldn't Day find a spot on the coaching staff to keep him at osu?

If he can help our team in some capacity, he is willing/available, and Big Fick vets him for a role then I'm on board.

It was reported that both Day and Coombs were interested in keeping him on, but that the new DC had other ideas about who he wanted in the positional coaching roles. I'd imagine Coombs could've been a recruiting coordinator, but he probably wants to stay on the field.

If the biggest criticism of Coombs is wondering why Miami didn't hire him as HC then he seems like a great hire for one of the open jobs at UC. I mean they've had Martin for 8 years and he had a terrific resume when they got him. His results haven't always been what was hoped for, but they also weren't the level where you get fired from a MAC school.

And not that it is particularly pertinent right now, but I also don't get all this "Coombs isn't cut out for FBS head coaching stuff". That's the same thing people said about Fickell prior to UC.

There's a difference in "isn't cut out for FBS head coaching" and "was rightfully never a candidate for the head coaching job at Cincinnati and the people who kept throwing his name out were silly.".

He was never at any point of his coaching career where he had the kind of track record / experience a program at UC's level should look to. A MAC school could have taken a shot at him if they deemed him a good candidate, but the UC candidate pool is and should be stronger.

Fickell isn't an apt comparison either. There were people disappointed in the Fickell hire, but he was a successful defensive coordinator at a major program. He'd been well enough thought of to get the interim head coaching job at that program. And that didn't work out great in bad circumstances, but the next guy thought enough of him to keep him on.

WSJ recruited for O$U. Pretty sure Rath could recruit top talent wearing a Block O pullover.
