You dont say an investment is bad because it does not return today when it make you a million shortly down the road. That is the deal with Bates. You have to have him know and let him develop into the stud we need in February and March.

Players with high potential have to be able to play through mistakes to improve. You know you will take some lumps from your high star recruit freshmen, but you push through and let them learn and develop.

One of the reasons I take issue with people who (for the past couple of years) say "ALo is our best pg". Well sure he is, he has been given @25 minutes a game for several seasons playing PG. If Timberlake was given 25mins a game purely playing PG for 25 games, who would be the better PG going into the tournament? Of course it would be Timberlake and probably by far.

You have to give Bates minutes and hope it doesnt hurt you too bad early in the season so he is playing good basketball by tournament time. This is a double whammy for Memphis since most of our big games come so early in the season.

But we need to win these games...We cant sacrifice development for wins.

To use your analogy...If you invest your money in an investment that you will know will pan out down the road...But the money you invested you need to pay your bills. That payback needs to come fast or you are screwed.

It might be better to quantify that as "if the season ended today".

I would agree if it ended today, but we will see how the year plays out. Needless to say the situation is fluid. Lets see how things go when he returns.
