RE: My dream (delusion?) is over
The administration never did anything to get the students involved when i was there during the Newell years. They didn't even put a sign up or do anything to get the students interested in seeing what was an excellent team. You could walk the whole campus and there was no sign that we even had a basketball team much less a competitive D1 team that has post season appearances every year. It was sad for sure but even more so now that they have an on campus arena. Mediocrity is the norm and it is accepted by the administration. Why in the world would alumni care about the program if they don't. Saw they really packed them in for the Jacksonville State game....900 folks bore witness to them getting housed again at home. Looks like DW had plenty of players. Would love to hear his lame excuse.

Interesting. I certainly agree with your perspective, but I think Newell was more interested in getting the community (potential ticket buyers) involved, especially with his move to the downtown Statehouse Convention Center. On the other hand, you would thinking a winning team that went to postseason would be enough to draw the interest of students.

I remember a lot of students went to Minneapolis for the NCAA tournament.

I frankly can't understand why we even have a D1 program if this is the way you run it.

Do you believe this year and last year have been extraordinary years?

It’s a sad fact that the athletic department has NEVER engaged the student body to be involved. Why expect grown a$$ men & women to suddenly care about their alma mater’s athletics when they didn’t care as students? The dept dropped the ball when the dorms were built and they didn’t capitalize on that. When I was around, CP and JPF really WANTED to involve the students, but there was no action. There’s no leadership and no cooperation between departments and never really has been.

Did CP actually come and talk to a group you belonged to?

I don't expect championships or post season bids from Walker and i will readily admit that the last two years have not been normal ones. What i am not willing to admit is that it is normal to fail to compete on a regular basis and get blown out on your home floor against opponents that are fairly well equally matched. I am not willing to give a coach 4 or 5 years when it is more of the same over and over. Other teams find a way to excel regardless of hard times. The coach is the one responsible for getting the talent in here and molding it into a competitive team and he isn't doing so.

Walker already has a championship under his belt. Maybe it was a fluke. But we certainly can't tell because of last year and this year. And he may be sitting on the best talent in the world but we don't know because 4 players are injured and not expected to play this year.

RE: My dream (delusion?) is over
Jeez. I guess I am really wishy-washy compared to you to guys. Like 92, I am really quite disappointed with Darrell at this point. But, like ez, I see some really extenuating factors the last couple of seasons and remember being quite excited after he won the league in his second season. Unless we totally fall apart this season (a lot more 20 point losses to peer programs), I don't believe a coaching change will even be considered after this year. I do think his progress, or lack of it, should be seriously evaluated after next season.

And of course with the finances of our program, the length left on his contract will be directly proportional to whatever heat he does or does not face, along with the performance of the team. Anybody know how long the current contract runs for?

I thought his original contract was for 3 years. I assume it was extended but have no clue for how long. I think it is very unlikely we would be in a position to pay for a buy-out. According to the State of Arkansas site, Darrell's salary is 250K. Balado's at ASU is 375K. Don't know about incentives or non-State money that may be provided by boosters, but it does look like we are getting a "bargain". Not sure we want to get into the coaching market if we can avoid it. Although Darrell's salary is likely more commensurate with what most schools in the OVC pay their coaches.
