He will be a camp invite, but likely not get drafted due to his size.

Pro camps are good but nothing like live action.

Will be scouts from almost every team at the bowl games.

He's a track star who changed to football so they know he has speed.

But teams will want to see more than just speed.

Will most likely have a career as return specialist.

Which he has done very little of this year.

Just 5 punt returns and no kick off returns.

"Austin is hutring himself not playing in the Hawaii Bowl?" 03-lmfao

"There will be 32 nfl scouts in Hawaii at our bowl game on Christmas eve"

this may be the dumbest prediction ever made on this board....

Not even close to the dumbest---does #2 on everybody's list only behind Cincinnati ring a bell

why dont you just comeout and admit that you are in love with Griffin?

LOL-He didn't make that statement---MOLASSES did

While I'm disappointed to hear that he'll be sitting out the game, I can only wish him the best as he prepares to earn a living playing football.

Some of you act like the players owe you something. No, they don't.

Calvin Austin busted his butt for years for the university, started as a walk-on. Far as I can tell, he gave it his all on every play. I wish him the best.

You whine like a baby about trophy culture...but you want a team that is 6-6 from a mid major conference that lost a game by 71 points to be in the playoffs.

Quote:When they expand the playoffs ----then bowls become even more of a political glorified exhibition than they already are . We need far less bowls and more teams in playoffs.
Quote:No one cares about bowl games. They are a glorified exhibition game.

Now you are easily the angriest, whining like a little baby because Austin isn't playing in a supposed exhibition game. You are always good for a few laughs.

The bowls are exactly what I said they are MOLASSES ---but if the school is going to play one --then the players need to honor their commitment and show just a little integrity

Stop following me with the insults SQUIGGY--otherwise I will start returning fire and we will both go in timeout again----and you will have to send the MODS a PM again saying that you have NEVER ATTACKED or INSULTED ANYONE on this board EVER---and blame our banishment just on me again.....you just said I was angry/whining like a baby LOL LOL LOL--if this board could only see those PMs you sent to the MODS ------NOBODY IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD WHINED LIKE YOU DID---I was EMBARRASSED for you

You are well on your way to your 3rd banning in a row and there is no way I will tag along this time.

Quote:you will have to send the MODS a PM again saying that you have NEVER ATTACKED or INSULTED ANYONE on this board EVER

Everyone knows I would never say anything like this. Everyone knows you are enough of a liar to say this and/or not bright enough to read properly.

Where is your outrage towards the D-Coordinator...

Shouldn't you be pissed at him too?

I was pissed at him all season---however I suppose we stopped paying him when he quit

There was a school out west that charged the players the scholly $$$ last year when they opted out. If other schools followed suit --this opting out crap would stop

I like that idea.
Put that as an agreement into the scholarship papers that they sign...make it official.

Sure...

They should have to pay back every penny for a class they have to take around the time the bowl happens...Oh wait...There aren't any...The semester is over. Hell the school gets the better deal...They don't have to pay for the next semester when no games are played.

Coaches get an extra check for that game...What do players get?

In this case... an all expenses paid trip to Hawaii. How many young college age people do you know would turn down a trip like that?
I don't see this as 'just a bowl game'.
I see this as a chance for a winning season. To me...that's the most important thing for this team. Our team has never had 8 straight winning season in a row...not even in the Spook Murphy years.
The team depended on this guy as their main offensive weapon the entire year. He has chemistry with Seth.
I don't see much upside of handcuffing your teammates like this.
There isn't much breakaway speed now at the WR spot outside of Eddie Lewis.
If Seth comes back... I'm hoping we hit the transfer portal/judo ranks hard for Wes and RBs.
Maybe a few OL too.

The last 10 years the focus has changed from what best for the team to what is best for me.

He was given a chance to walk on, they didn't have to give him that chance.

He was just going to get a degree as a track athlete no real chance to have an extra career or possibly make real money.

Thank you Austin and good luck, I really enjoyed watching you wear the blue and grey.

Anyone who doesn't understand and respect Austin's decision is a classless jerk.

Just because someone has a different opinion doesn't make them a classless jerk...just means they have a different opinion.

That said, this is a good move for Mr. Austin...hope he can get healthy and a bit stronger before the combine.

I also expect Sean Dykes will opt out also. At least, if he was my son, I'd advise him to do the same thing Austin is doing.

I agree with this and it started with the coaches walking away from teams before the season is over. Selfishness, greed, jealousy and apathy have become the current religion. I am upset with the emerging society of hate.

Creating a society where people value themselves and their own future is not "selfish" - it is value-based. There's no nobility in being altruistic to a possible detriment to your future.

If Austin was being paid NFL League Minimum to play at the Bowl Game, he'd probably be there. Instead, his future is not the bowl game - it is trying to get to the NFL to maximize his value and getting/staying healthy to do that is paramount.

The coaches understand this. The players understand this. There's a reasonable understanding of trading value for value and when that partnership can be opted out of for better opportunities.

Employees wouldn't stay at a job due to "commitment" if their value and worth is better elsewhere (and if they do, they're idiots). Why are we trying to apply some weird high level of commitment because it is sports? He gave the football team 4 years, he earned his spot and elevated his value and future value on hard work, and he's opting to maximize it.

Different opinions and different perspectives on it. I hope he has makes it to the NFL and God bless him on his journey on his next step. I am glad he's selfish, i.e. values himself - it helped him work towards making himself a better player.

Exactly. We were blessed to have him and he made a decision that made sense for him and his family. Career ending injuries do occasionally happen in bowl games. He has already more than demonstrated his talent on the field and has actually played hurt most of the year.

I thank Austin for being a great representative of our university and wish him the best as he pursues a career in the NFL. I believe he will be a success in the NFL, but more importantly, in anything he chooses to do in life. A great young man, all the way around.
