Serious question about the AAC bowl games
Who decides which teams go to the various bowl games ? Does the conference assign the teams or are the teams involved in the decision? I would think that the Hawaii Bowl would be one of the lesser bowls for the AAC to choose. What kind of publicity will you get by playing Hawaii in a 9000 capacity stadium in Hawaii ?

Ultimately the conference picks but schools, bowl officials, and espn have influence but since you're shiting on this bowl what kind of publicity do you get playing in Birmingham or Frisco?

It’s a bowl trip which was in doubt.
It’s a reward for the players. They expressed that’s where they want to go.
It’s on tv so the size of the stadium has nothing to do the kind of publicity it will get over any other minor bowl.
Considering the reaction of our fans this year we were not going to travel well anyway so why not use this year for a place low ticket sales fit in.

If you’re a Tiger fan either go and enjoy or watch and enjoy. It’s that simple.

:coffee3:Who pissed in your cereal this morning ? I asked a simple question and you chose to start something. If I wanted to **** on a bowl I could do a lot better that that. Hawaii college team in Hawaii or LSU in new Birmingham stadium as a choice and I think our travel fans would prefer the SEC over Hawaii college team.

Memphis finished tied for 7th place, and you think they should get a game against a premier opponent?

RE: Serious question about the AAC bowl games
I expect the conference has some say in who goes to which bowl, but I'm sure they try to accommodate the respective teams.

As for why are we going to Hawaii? I expect that it was "our turn" to go there. We've gone to stateside bowls, and got to go to Birmingham & Montgomery several times. Albeit not the ideal bowl locales, those are drivable bowl trips for the fans. We had better records those years, though. Considering our 6-6 record this year, I expect that if there was ever a time to go to Hawaii, this was the year.

Agreed, better this year than when we are 8-4 or better and would actually bring some fans. I think Aresco works it out with the bowls and then the Universities sign-off (or not then he reworks the plan). It would appear we "volunteered" this time out when we hit 6.

RE: Serious question about the AAC bowl games
Agree with those above …..it was simply our turn.

Now as far as bowl exposure one could argue very strongly you get more national exposure with the Hawaii bowl than with any of the other lesser bowls the AAC is affiliated with. There is not much college football competition that day on TV, unlike the Birmingham bowl that has 4 other games on that day.

RE: Serious question about the AAC bowl games
I get the original intention of the question. The Hawaii bowl does seem like a bad consolation prize for the fans who may find the travel quite expensive and cumbersome, but it's really a good opportunity for our players to be rewarded with the trip and for our team to showcase itself and recruit in Hawaii. While the latter may not produce much, it's still exposure and over the years there have been some good players who have come out of the state.

RE: Serious question about the AAC bowl games
None of these bowls matter anyway. If it’s not a NY6 or in our case the Liberty. It’s a chance to play the younger players because several seniors will probably opt out

That and a little extra chance to do some recruiting. Other than that, the players get some swag and a free trip, so it's a reward for them.

RE: Serious question about the AAC bowl games
As others mentioned, we wouldn't have travelled well this year, so this is an opportune time to play in Hawaii.

There usually isn't any competition for viewership on Christmas Eve night, so I imagine a lot of eyes will be on the Tigers. The Hawaii Bowl is probably more well-known than the Birmingham Bowl (and certainly than the Frisco Bowl).

As also mentioned, it's a great reward to the players.

Looking forward to some sweet Hawaii Bowl merchandise.

I would love to hear the reason why any senior on our team would opt out of a free trip to Hawaii.

I recently used that expression around some 20 something crowd and was met with blank looks and the “what box” question. It was not a place the story could be told. Lol

Thank you to everyone that offered sincere information and thoughts.
I really did not know how the various AAC teams were assigned.

RE: Serious question about the AAC bowl games
I see it as yet another chance to secure a winning season. That would make 8 in a row, correct?
Unprecendented in Tiger football history. Closest we ever came to that was during the Spook Murphy years...and one season we went 5-5.

We are the bell cow in the conference now. We were getting this bowl because the coach wanted it for the players.
