Don't understand not going for it. That's a moment when you gotta say "we're winning the championship right here, try and stop us". All the pressure was on UTSA. You have to go for the kill shot.

But even after the fact Clark doesn't agree.

“Lord, I wanted to go for it,” Clark said. “I just didn’t know how to live with myself giving them the ball if something happened, the ball goes through his hand or slips. With one-minute left, they went 70-80 yards, but I do that a hundred out of a hundred times.”

Biggest problem with running mostly pistol/shotgun is it takes the QB sneak out of the equation. Starting from 4 yards back all you need is one OL failure to kill the play. Line up under center when you never do dramatically increases the likelihood of a bad snap and tips what you are planning

Again we should have won either way

Hopkins has run plays under center this season under similar circumstances.

RE: On the 4th and inches…
I get the logic of punting, I just disagree with it.

Hate that such an otherwise strong performance and such a huge opportunity gets wiped out. But sun came up today. There is still some important stuff to accomplish and I strongly disagree with those here who say that it doesn’t matter. It does. What we do next and how we respond matters A LOT.

Congrats to UTSA. They earned it. They made some great plays to overcome and win in a game they should have lost. We know what that feels like. And now we know what it feels like to be the hunted and have fans storm the field. They used their disappointment from last year as fuel. We need to do the same.

Iron sharpens iron, and those guys aren’t going anywhere. They are coming with us. They have raised their game and we need to raise ours. All of us, including the fans. Stuff that needs to be addressed in the off-season, address then. Right now — beat UTEP and then win a bowl game.

You either win, or you learn. At this point I truly question whether we truly learn how to take this forward and get better, or justify it away and do the same old things.

There is a stark difference in tone between AK’s postgame Thursday night and the one I heard last night. When the stakes are high, the accountability needs to be there.

As many have pointed out above, not going for it was one thing, but the defensive scheming was another.

This program’s calling card has never been to win the game with the ball in your hand. See Tulane and Marshall especially this year. This was the one time it failed—on a massive stage.

In some ways, turning it over on downs and giving the Meeps the ball on our 42 may have been better, because we would’ve been more likely to play the defense we had been throughout the 4th quarter.

It looked like the coaching staff froze. They sent out the punt team because they weren't deciding anything. Well, you make the big money (and compared to anyone who has a real job, it's astronomically big money) not to freeze.

If that's the case - and it definitely looks like it to me - that's worse than making a bad decision. Make a decision, even a bad one, but don't flounder.

RE: On the 4th and inches…
I agree we would have played better defense on a shorter field. That is another reason I would have gone for it, and I said so out loud as soon as I saw McBride squeeze through the gap to put the decision in play. If DeWayne is stopped where contact happened, the punt is an easy choice.

Bill is a defensive coach with a defensive mindset and our D had played really good the last few series, but a big part of that was deciding to go after the QB. Defending the whole field in open space, with a QB who can sling it and feel pressure hasn’t been out strong point ever. And yes, we often can get some pressure with 3 because our DL is much better than most OLs. UTSA line is good though and, well, the cusa officials seemed content to ignore holding for them, too.

As it was, it took UTSA two plays to be where they would have gotten the ball on a stop with only a few seconds difference in time.

And this is why I think he will lose some fan support.

My personal opinion for my enjoyment as a fan is that I go to games in person for the atmosphere and UAB playing a great exciting game. Over the past couple years of watching Clark’s style of football, I have realized that he will not bring in the great atmosphere that I always hope we have at UAB. Clark plays slow grinding football. To me, that is boring football. I prefer the exciting high scoring offenses.

When scheduling my time to attend a football game in person, I will block out 4-5 hours. If I don’t feel entertained, it makes me more likely to choose something else to do with my time. In the past, I have chosen to attend other teams games with friends and it didn’t matter who they were playing because I knew the atmosphere in the stadium would be great. I also knew the style of football would be high scoring and fun to watch. We do not have the luxury of having a 100 year old school with 100 years of fan support.

We are competing against several schools in the state that have that already. My opinion is that we have to provide excitement in order to get the “fair weather” fans into the gates and have that great atmosphere. When fans know that the game will be a slow grind and that the coach doesn’t go for the kill, they will find something else to do. I know I’m contemplating it and from the crowds at our new gorgeous stadium, others are too.

My only question about the 3rd down — was it a good spot?

RE: On the 4th and inches…
At this point, I am past the initial hurt I felt yesterday, and yes, 100 out of 100 I think going for it was the better percentage than giving them the ball 73 yards away with 1:15 to play. I trust our defense to stop them at the 43 better than 73 yards away. I trust the offense to get 4 inches with a championship on the line.

But I am also gonna give UTSA all the credit in the world. They played like champs too and we had ample opportunities to stop them there. We were close to some great plays to do it too, they made a better play each time to stay alive. On the TD, I think the bobble actually helped them there — defense reacted to it. They did have a great play called there. And Noah, who will never be confused for a track high jumper, darn near knocked that down. That would have been a play we talked about for AGES if he gets a half inch more of his hand on the ball.

We wanna scream about the play calling but that was a hell of an offensive game plan against one heck of a D. The Runners are big and fast and tackle well. We completely had them off balance. They did make some terrific adjustments in 3rd quarter — but we also did the same. This was a chess match between good coaching staffs.

Bottom line is I think that was one of the best performances we’ve had that I can recall, and yet it was also the full UAB Experience where we can look back at 5-6 plays/decisions and Charlie Brown it all day, not just about the game itself by the “opportunity lost” because that is our psychosis as Blazers. So close. So far. And nothing can ever be just a game or a loss, or even a win, because we require some deeper meaning every time and validation, from whom I don’t know exactly.

If you want to be miserable, you got what you want. If you want to be a sunshine pumper, you could find the sun and hug that baby until it burned. If you want to told-you-so, you got it. It sucked to lose. We had many chances to win. They made one more play at the end.

On to UTEP. And then let’s go get our 2nd bowl win. From the most bitter defeats come the best stories.

RE: On the 4th and inches…
Two points to this:

1) Do we not practice any direct snap under center plays with either QB or RB position? If not, why the heck not? This kind of scenario is not unheard of and we should at least be prepared for that possibility.

2) Why not at least line up and attempt to draw them offsides? Unlikely to work, but at least gives you a chance while delay of game with punting do not.

It’s not the way anyone wants to lose a Division or potential conference title. But it is what it is. He doesn’t have to acknowledge to the fans that it was a wrong decision. That isn’t that important to me. But he hopefully is at least internally considering whether it was the right call and or if there were things that should have been handled differently. This kind of loss can’t be for nothing. There are lessons to be learned on multiple fronts.

I played center for several years. You don’t just practice a direct snap a few times a week and expect it to work. Especially in that situation when the defense is prepared for it. You are asking for a fumble.

Doesn't matter if we practice or not, we should've just treated it like a 4th and inches goal line situation when a Field Goal wouldn't win it. What would we do then? Run that.

Agree but after reading a lot of post on this subjects it maybe that a limited staffs were not prepared for that particular play
i remember before they send the punting team i saw a big ol guy piss on the side line and i knew at that time ,,,,,the next play will be a punt

We don’t prepare on a lot of things. Returning punts, 4th and inches, 3rd and medium, 2 minute drills, snap counts, Discipline away from ball or after play blown dead, play call signals, crowd noise, 2nd half adjustments. Who has something else to add?

In today's Yron Bowl game, Bama faced four problems of "fourth and inches" and Coach Saban went for it all four times. Results? Zero for four. If you run into FBHC Clark and want to fuss about his choice , he may quote that statistic to you. It isn't as easy as it looks.

How much time was left? How well was his defense playing? Did he have the lead? Did he rush only 3 to get the stop he needed?
